The cost of Sky is what it is. If you don't like the cost, don't subscribe. But whatever the cost it's not an excuse to steal services

It is comments like that and such wishy washy opinions why they charge what they want

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

No it's called business and competition. If Sky didn't offer a good product then no-one would be with them, therefore they would have to drop prices to attract customers.

But as they do offer a good product then people do want their TV so they will charge appropriately.

Same as Virgin do.

Indeed, but the point is you still don't HAVE to subscribe do you. So where's the problem?

They charge what people are willing to pay. There are plenty of channels available for free. It's your choice if you want to then pay for more. If you can't afford it then you can't legally have it.

My point is that this is TV, it's not a luxury like all them rich folk have who live in new build detached house with a 50" plasma and a BMW who think they've made it.

Even if I agreed with you about TV not being a luxury which I don't by the way.

They still don't need virgin or sky, they can get a freeview box or freesat system which by your own defenition fulfills their 'luxury'.

TV is a luxury.First of all you need a licence and only the elderly get that free..Then they need the TV itself and they don't get more than Freeview and that's that.

If you are young, fit then you either take what's free or you pay for it..by working to earn the wages to pay for it.

Funny what people think of as a right and a necessity these days.

Blimey I can see a couple of people getting a tad upset in this thread.

Losing free cable after several years will do that I guess, be even more complaints when the security enhancements to the cable modem platform are complete and that disappears as well :)

This is the one that I am waiting for as this impacts the network

The cable box issue may add a few quid to our bills but thats implying everone using a dodgy box would subscribe to virgin if they never existed of course. Also there is the cost issue that virgin are to blame for by not picking up boxes adding to our bills.

It really makes me laugh when people who openly download warez and pirated media come into this thread slagging off people who use these dodgy cable boxes as in the real world its no different. I wonder if these people would be so pleased if Virgin did start blocking P2P BT and Newsgroup access because users are most often taking money out of the media industries pockets eh?

Toto 04-11-2009 08:49

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Welll, it had to come didn't it.

I agree with B'bandings and Zing, that when the security enhancements are rolled out across the networks for the cable modem system it will be the start of the end for cable theft.....and likely to cause a big impact.

I am in Teesside, not Hull or Leeds and if that was a suggestion that I have a dodgy box it proves that this forum is full of tools. I am against every single kind of media piracy, I work in the movie industry which has probably taken the biggest hit, second to the music industry.

They may be wrong about you wilsonreece but I think they are right to wonder why anybody is less than enthusiastic about the prevention of cable theft and be suspicious of their reasons. If you work in the movie industry and really are concerned about media piracy why aren't you applauding this long overdue move instead of finding reasons to be less than cheerful? It really doesn't have any downside for honest people does it?

wilsonreece 04-11-2009 10:38

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

I am applauding it, I simply stated in the first place that it will lose Virgin money and they could have approached it differently by making a better package service than sky for slightly cheaper. That can't be too difficult with Sky's operating costs rising by £114m per year!

Don't tell Ofcom that, makes Virgin's complaints about Sky overcharging them for some channels look a bit silly if they are able to undercut Sky and still make an operating profit doesn't it?

Should be noted it's hard to compare the two directly, Sky can't force you to take a phone line to get their TV.

BenMcr 04-11-2009 12:57

No matter how much i would love to agree and see the network reliability increase due to having no flashed / chiped tv, modems etc..

Quite frankly it aint the end... The new 50meg modem ( Ambit 300 ) call it what u want, has all ready been hacked, flashed and is last years news & currently on use with virgin network... theres actually a few being used in the west mid's area.

And no they dont need no stupid mac codes now either.. encrypted config files wont do virgin no good either.

So The war continues :(

Dnt ask me to provide proof either as you wont get none!

thats debatable isnt it?

Family pack VM 21.50 Sky 23 VM wins
Family pack + movies and sports 21.50 + £27.50 = 49 Sky 48.50 Sky wins
VM would also win on free HD content with V+ with the extra tuner but I think the lack of content negates that a little so in all fairness its around a draw

BenMcr 04-11-2009 22:25

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

I was actually referring to the lower packages

M+ TV no phoneline price is £11.50

TV L TV no phoneline price is £16

Both of these are cheaper than Sky's minimum of £18

zing_deleted 04-11-2009 22:59

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

you didnt actually specify a criteria lol I think content wise Sky beat VM myself also having experienced all the boxes Sky also beat VM on quality

I would agree Sky`s box is much easier to use, & has the edge on quality, sky`s packages fall down because you need a BT line, & that ups the price.

Peter_ 05-11-2009 06:29

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Well I tried SKY and had 3 boxes in 3 months and cancelled the contract due to them breaching it due to lack of service and the engineers taking much to long to arrive, minimum 7 days, and of course come 12 months they want to charge you for an engineer visit.

Never again.

and thats more expensive than Skys Family pack ok its cheaper if you do not want all the packages. Please note if you source your box privately ie cheaply on ebay you do not need a phone line with a Sky box. Also you are only contracted through the box deal to have a phone line attached for 12 months.

Does anyone have the telephone number to report these dodgy buggers, I've not seen the advert on the tv and have checked as many of the posts on this thread as I can. (stuck at work with gaffer moaning)

I know someone that had the standard service installed then purchased a dodgy one for £110, he's always bragging about getting every single channel, really really cheeses me off as many of us actually pay for our services.

I was talking to my hairdresser yesterday and apparently there's a guy who sells these boxes from a van in a local pub car park. He's been making a bit of a nuisance of himself of late approaching pub customers saying that he has got too much stock and wants to make a bit of space in his garage so will do you a favour and let you have a box for a £20.

Not sure of that, but I've seen instances in the past where a customer has had a dodgy box taken away by a fault tech after an unrelated fault for another service ;)

That I don't know. If they were charged it was probably off bill but as they phoned up and added another paid box VM may have decided not to - as they were now getting the extra revenue

Only some of the boxes are 3rd party most are modified VM boxes . I do not think the new encryption will be a simple flash to get around it. I am sure I have read the popular European box is not flashable to cover Nagra 3 in countries its been implimented

As far as connection these 3rd party boxes its against terms to connect them to VM equipment however I do not know if its actually illegal to connect them though. But modified cable boxes are the property of Vm (although they write them off and perhaps expect you to stick them in the loft forever) makes at best owning one receiving stolen goods which is criminal

That would be perfect as the may not be much on over Christmas but all kids love to watch tv at that time and it would be poetic justice that they are turned into doorstops at that time.

Even if fault were open once they realised it was a chipped box they would be reported and disconnected from Virgin anyway.

Pretty much all of them are capable of being flashed to support an n3 softcam, however, none actually exist. If n3 is ever cracked then it would be trivial to update most of the boxes to actually support it, but the prospects of n3 getting hacked are looking quite slim as it's took a hell of a beating already and stood up to it pretty well. So, it would be a simple flash, IF n3 is ever compromised.

As for if it's actually illegal to connect them, yes, it is. The copyright act creates an offense of "fraudulently receiving programmes" which states:

(1) A person who dishonestly receives a programme included in a broadcasting or cable programme service provided from a place in the United Kingdom with intent to avoid payment of any charge applicable to the reception of the programme commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale.

As for The Whole Make It like Sky.... Trust me Sky Isnt 100% FoolProof..

Really? You were just on techwatch not so long ago bragging (well lying) about having a chipped sky box w/a chipped card so who knows what to believe.

In the end the encryption may get hacked but in the meantime it will take out a lot of novices out there and maybe earn Virgin some extra revenue.

By offering 50mb broadband, virgin are giving an almost broadcast quality option to stream all of the tv off foreign websites so it will be a simple case of swapping the box for a media PC

Except for you're not going to find any foreign websites offering anywhere near broadcast quality streams.

It's hard enough to find a decent quality stream of the football that doesn't get pulled after 20mins, (not that I'd ever do anything like that *cough*) you're definitely not going to be able to replace your daily viewing with online streams.

It does make me laugh how a lot of people rubbing their hands happily on the news that all these 'freeloaders' will have to pay for TV think nothing of downloading movies off the net. They argue that the 'freeloaders' are making subscriptions more expensive and yet their movie downloads means higher cinema costs. Most people I know nowadays think its stupid and a waste of money to pay to go to the cinema, yet these are the same people having a go at those with chipped boxes or happy that their chipped boxes will no longer work.

I do feel that we go a bit OTT on people using dodgy boxes, yet those that download movies, games, books & music dont get as much flak.

At the end of the day I pay @£40 for Sky because some of the channels Sky has aren't available on Virgin. If they were I'd still pay for my TV. As for whether anyone else pays or doesnt pay, it doesn't bother me - not my problem. If I made it my problem I'd have to stop watching downloaded movies, stop playing downloaded games, stop listening to downloaded music. I'd be a hypocrite.

Have you taken in to account that its not just the chipped boxes but its also the illegal entry into street furniture that goes on from time to time to reconnect those that have been disconnected,

Then there is the noise that some of these badly chipped boxes create on the network and the risk of damage to a trunk amp if a badly converted box is connected ?????.

Are those that think this is a small time offence happy to have there Internet affected by a chipped box that is flooding the area with noise ?????

It depends, if you're watching things that are screened on UK tv, then the same as if you connected a dodgy box. If you're watching something that isn't, I'd argue not very, as the only areas of law that I can think of that deal with it would be obtaining a broadcast to avoid payment, which if you're watching stuff that's not shown on British TV (such as saturday 3pm kick offs) then you can't be avoiding payment as there's no way to pay for them.

Copyright law which is what this deals with in the uk is 90% about the people who make things available, and not those that use for private use unless they're causing someone to lose money.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

It would appear the law has more of a distinction between the two issues than SLM does - stealing cable is a criminal offence, copyright infringement is not.

I should mention I despise cable theft, visit the cinema at least once a month, last month was the 3D version of Up, and in addition purchase more legitimate content now than I ever have at any point in my life, Amazon delivered the full 'V' collection to me this morning.

Apparently paradoxically they yesterday delivered me 100 DVD-Rs and I think it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that my plans for those aren't entirely legitimate.

The point is you can't tar everyone with the same brush, while some may think going to the cinema is stupid it's an experience you just can't totally replicate at home regardless of how good your home cinema is and I don't even have home cinema, and as far as content goes nothing beats a quality original. A burned copy is temporary, an original if the content merits it is for life. :)

TV wise I have Sky+ HD and multiroom, full channel pack + sport + movies. It would appear my evil downloading habits have purely positive effects on my expenditure for content given that the last 3 PC games we've purchased this year were all downloaded first then purchased.

Perhaps I'm atypical but I'd like to think I'm not. Either way I'll stick to my view that theft of cable service is a crime, potentially degrades other people's service, and usually has a demonstrable cost to the company which the content is being stolen from unlike the movie and film industries whose claims of lost revenue due to piracy are precarious to say the least... but I'm getting off topic a touch :)

I was under the impression that the copying of films, say using recording equipment in a cinema, is illegal. The distribution of illegal DVDs, if what we are led to believe is true is an organised crime that we are told also contributes to terrorism amongst other things.

Whether people go to the cinema, because they get a higher experience than watcing the film on a download at home is irrelevant if you are still downloading or watching downloaded content. They might not be commiting a criminal offence, but they are contributing to one.

Yes using dodgy boxes is illegal, and I am not defending their use. My post was about differing attitudes. I do think that before tarnishing all users of dodgy boxes as evil ****, we should look a bit closer to home.

Copying is, distribution is, downloading, most likely isn't.

It also doesn't contribute to terrorism unless you're buying off some dodgy guy in a pub that happens to then send the money on to some terrorist sleeper cell, but then the same can be said for anything, the guy on the market you buy your fruit and veg from could be sending the money to some terrorist organisation.

If you're downloading, and ergo not paying any money, you cannot be contributing to terrorism or organised crime as they're not making any money from it.

I wish the likes of the RIAA/MPAA would stop with the "zomg piracy funds terrorism" arguments already, because in 99.9% of cases it doesn't and just causes people to roll their eyes at the campaigns.

The thing is some people that do download do so because they simply cannot get the same service without doing so.

For instance just about the only thing that I download (well, I stream it online) is live football at 3pm on saturdays, I'm a season ticket holder, and go to every home game, and watch every televised away game, but because of some dumb FA rule that bans 3pm's being televised in this country I can't watch them legitimately, instead I have to delve into the dark world of online streams. I'd HAPPILY pay for an official service, but there just isn't one.

As much as I'd love to I can't go to many away games as I'm on call on weekends, and as such have to be within 30mins traveling distance of work, so I'm left with the scenario of either not watching the game and listening to the worst commentry possible on the radio, or actually getting to watch the game, but it being through an unofficial potentially illegal 3rd party. I'll choose the latter everytime and not feel bad about it because I'm not depriving anyone of income as no one will offer me a service where I can do it legitimately.

The service is offered: you can go to the match.

Anyone who thinks stealing for this reason is okay is a hypocrite.

No, because that's entirely different, it's like saying you can't afford a car so I'll go steal one, whereas what I'm saying is I that no one is actually offering to sell me the service at any price, so who exactly am I withholding revenue from to make it as bad as hooking up a dodgy box?

My point is merely that all those who infringe are not created equal, and just because some people may infringe (or may not, depending on the interpretation of the law) it doesn't mean that they are on the same level as others and are therefore unable to draw comment, as the intention behind the infringement can clearly separate someone who does so to avoid payment, and someone who does so because there's no legitimate alternative.

Infringement isn't black and white, nothing in this world is, there's a whole world of gray in between.

That's a REALLY cheap shot ... For provoking people you should have your mod status taken off you. I'm pretty disgusted by your behaviour and YES, I'm going to report you for it.
