Where am I ????

Any kind forum member happen to know where I am?

OK! I mean, of course, in relation to Virgin Media cable system. I live in Hounslow, West London. I cannot see from the Virgin website where that fits in with their network locations.

Any information welcome!:)

Thanks! That's very clever.

Does this mean that I am in the Hayes area for Virgin purposes?

Despite Nottingham still being TBC in their list, I seem to have the upgraded in South Notts (cpc1-clif2-0-0-custxxx.nott.cable.ntl.com)

Almost 10 Mb/s down and close to 500 kb/s up.

Sooner than I expect.

Since my unannounced upgrade from 4mb to 10mb yesterday (Luton), my speed has slowly but steadily dropped from the full 10mb through to 2mb now.

Thanks Virgin. That's the second reason today you've given me to switch.

cpc3-nott1-0-0-custxxx.nott.cable.ntl.com still running at 3.9mb which is still a change from the normal 2mb !

I posted about this the other day. It seems I (and a few friends) have been put on 10mb. All our config files say 10mb, it's just that they're all getting 7mb speeds, and I'm getting 2/3mb speeds.

Restart your modem, see what happens.

Off you go and speak to who you like :erm:

Mine wasn't a winge, more a comment on the speed of the upgrades - the TBC numbers don't seem to be changing at all on the information page.

Being on a server suffering with over contention I would rather wait until Virgin have a hope of supplying 4MG rather than forcing them to prematurely boost us to 10MG and the contention issues becoming even worse.

I sympathise, believe me. Mine took a while to sort , after the upgrade happened in Stafford. Some of it down to Virgin, mostly down to my router not being good enough for the upgrade. If you are still using a 120 modem that can be part of your problem, far more likely the upgrade is not totally complete. It took a fortnight to settle down here. Even now I'm not totally sorted, I'm having problems (again ) accessing my FTP server files, and this time Abyssunderground has not been able to help, I do know it can work, for 10 days after replacing my router with a newer one,I had all the speed I should, and everything connected
Hopefully this too will pass. I still have the speed correct!
However frustrating waiting is,I still think Virgin and cable a better bet than ADSL. I hear much worse horror stories from freinds stuck with phone line connections via the BT network. They envy those able to choose cable.

You say you dont care when they do it but yet you said as long as they dont do it soon you will change - oh and those USB dongles cost about £2.00 per MB so good luck with that!

Wrong....... T-Mobile, 3 and Vodafone all are doing £15 a month price plans with a 3Gb/month 'Fair Use' limit. I use the T-Mobile one for accessing the net 'Out and About' - as i got a good deal a month or so ago that they included free connection to any of T-mobile's Wireless hotspots....handy if you use Starbuck's a lot!!!

http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobil...webnwalk-plus/

http://www.three.co.uk/personal/prod...nd_/detail.omp

http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...pageID=MB_0001

(PS - Sorry for being slightly OT - Just wanted to point out that 'Webcrawler' was wrong with their assumption about mobile BB)

On topic - The speed increase gets here when it gets here. It's for free......so next week or next month doesn't matter to me!!!

Its not free, we pay VM above average prices for broadband. For that I expect faster speeds and less limitations.

I definitely wouldn't be with VM if my ADSL line was more stable.

Its only the poor quality of ADSL infrastructure in this country that is keeping VM in users.

Seems to me that people who really cant wait for the 10mb upgrade should look at getting XL-BB, if you have a phone as well the difference between L and XL is just £4, just a thought.

I Totally agree with u on that, they state their network is capable of so much more than what BT's is yet it seems to be performing worse than BT.

yes i admit connection speeds are faster than what a lot of ADSL Companies but u dont see ADSL Companies saying u can only download 2GB between 3-9pm usually. I have been looking at an ADSL Company which yes its more expensive at £29.99 a month for upto 8mb but i can get 60GB on peak downloads and 300GB off peak downloads with NO STM.

I've restarted my modem quite a bit, and it's still saying 10mb, same with people I know in the area. But I'm still getting very varying speeds - anything from 2mb to 6mb (usually the lower), while mostly everyone else is getting 9mb/10mb.

We've had a new modem fairly recently (18/24 months), so I wouldn't have thought it was that. My downstream receive power level is 12dBmv (good? bad? alright?).

I don't think it's the router either, as even with a computer plugged straight in to the modem, it's still 2-6mb.

Surely a 'G' router should be able to handle 10Mbs as its nominal rating is 54Mbs. Did you mean a 'B' router which is only rated at 11Mbs?

GU16 (Camberley) currently operating at 11Mb/s average. Hurrah !

At this sort of network speed, the speed of the server at the far end is starting to have a significant effect on the overall response time for any site.

I was talking to retentions last night about issues other than broadband, and I was told that the Baguley area (Birkenhead, Macclesfield Runcorn and Stoke) was not scheduled until at least the end of June for upgrading.

That seems just about par for the course. With our luck virgin will keep putting the relief work off on the Baguley server until after the children go back to school in September and I doubt that they will do any upgrading for us until the server can handle the increased demands.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I'm in NG17 and testing last night I could get a steady 10Mb when downloading multiple files but all my speedtests maxed out around 8Mb and my ping was around 40 ms at speedtest.net.

I've used speedtest.net, bbmax.co.uk and even the one at the top of this forum (that one was all over the place).

G UK is in the same area and his ping is half mine anybody got any tips.

I've already run a tweak test at dslreports and tweaked my settings accordingly and I've used lvlords patch to increase my TCP limit.

It's mainly the ping I want to improve.

Can anyone explain why this time the rollout is taking so long?

!!!!!!!!guildford Area Now Complete!!!!!!!!!!

GUILDFORD AREA COMPLETE?

2300 Here and my Internet just went down. Decided it was time to reboot modem incase of completed upgrade and it came back up and was noticeabley lightning fast. Then gradually went from 10mb down to about 8mb. Still, noticeably faster on browsing sites. As promised "April" being 1st May, isn't bad.

Cheers

Stupid question time. When I restart my modem do I click the "Reboot your modem" on the config page or unplug it?

Unplugging it gives the quickest response.

The download limit stays at 800MB, the upload limit is increased from 325MB to 400MB and, most significantly, the download speed while STM'd increases from 1Mb/s to 2.5Mb/s (and the upload speed remains at 128Kb/s).

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Looking at the "Even Faster" page, only 25% has been completed so far. Are they going to start ramping up the speed that they roll it out? At the current rate it's going to be the end of 2009 before it's all done.

My area has not been upgraded yet but will I need a BB Modem to get the higher speed or can I get this via my STB as it is configured at the moment.

If I need a modem instead is this free or do I have to pay

thanks

Broadband through the Samsung STB is limited to about 5 Meg, so yes you would need a modem fitted. This is a free upgrade (I think VM are trying to get everyone migrated away from broadband through the STB anyway) but you will need to call customer services and arrange it.

If your STB needs replacing, VM will supply it free.

To check if you need a new one, head over to VM's Even Faster section and select Broadband Service L in the drop down box and the next page will ask you to select your current kit (STBs are at the bottom of the list). Click on your STB and it'll let you know if it's suitable for the 10Mb service (if it ever arrives!).

If you don't fancy calling a premium number, you can request a new modem via VM's Tech Support newgroup as well.

Need help getting onto VM's Tech Support newsgroup?

Thanks for the info - looks like I need mine replaced but as I have a fault on it anyway I will log a call via the fault line and get it replaced then.
