does anyone know if the speeds will be updated automatically by NTL in the near future or will all users have to upgrade online via the link?

Unless you have a)300k or b)A pace stb you should be upgrade automatically at some point.

I'm sure if I'm wrong I'll get corrected shortly :)

Hi and :welcome: to the madhouse, er, Cableforum. :)

Everything you do on the internet involves uploads. Click on a link and it has to upload the fact that you want it. Download a large file and it has to continually upload a signal that it has got the last packet of it correctly.

Why more speed? So you can hit your cap quicker and potentially stop you from surfing for the rest of the day!

So, you can use your 3mbps connection at max download speed for about 45 minutes per day, then you have to wait 23 1/4 hours to start surfing again :)

Just be aware that you may not notice a great deal of improvement in gaming - the upload is the most important bit for this. ;)

You think? Been using the 2Mb connection for a few days now and its MUCH better. Its is a big improvement over the 750. All online games now playin much better - its like the improvement I saw when I went from 56k dial-up to 512 Broadband. Ordinary surfing is now a joy too - big pages that took a while now load instantly. Yahooooooooooooooo!!!

Depends very much on the type of game you like playing. 'Push games' like WoW or Eve or Horizons will definately be quicker, probably won't make such a big difference to the quake'ers or similar style bi-directional games.

When I did it via the website it took 10 mins. The modem shd reboot itself and then u'll have it. It does no good to reboot it urself. :(

Hi all.

Just to let you all know that at 15:00pm today i rang NTL CS. This was after reading what was on this thread about the upgrade's :)

I rang them because i did'nt feel sure about doing the manual online upgrade.

Anyway this is what happened..............

Me - Hello i was wondering about the BB upgrade's in the Bolton area and when they will be happening ?

CS assistant - Yes sir there being done now. But i can do it for you right away :D. What speed are you on at the moment. And is it modem or STB?

Me - I'm on 750Kbps. And it's a modem.

CS assistant - Ok sir you have now been upgraded to 2MB. Just unplug your modem and plug back in and your done :D

Me - Well thankyou very much indeed :D

And she was right. I checked the http://192.168.100.1/P_operation.htm and sure enough 2Mb :D

The CS assistant told me that the automatic update's are going out. But, alot of them are being bounced back :Yikes:. So like A LOT of other people have allready said in this thread. RING THEM UP ! Took 5 min's for the whole process.

Just have to say i get fantastic service for NTL BB and even better now.

Well done NTL :tu:

Ianuk, if they've been instructed not to do it over the phone, then you'll just have to accept that. Getting annoyed isn't going to get you very far. Just wait for ther automatic upgrade.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

For all we know NTL may have a list of areas where work is still required to bring them up to scratch for the speed upgrades. The NTL CSRs may have been instructed not to upgrade anyone in those areas. Other people calling in may be in areas that have had all the work done and it is OK for customers calling from them to be upgraded.

We don't know what NTL staff have been told to do regarding speed upgrades, if anything. As a result it is unfair to judge those who will not do your upgrade.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I've been done now :)

Yes I had to reboot the modem and reprovision, all works.

Phoned them up and quickly, yes, quickly got throuh to CS, and got it sorted almost straight away!!

Hi,

I am in Bromley & have Pace STB, I was on the 750 now on 1 MB, with a new STB coming 12/4 so I can have 2mb. It did not go quite smoothly tho, as I rang CS yesterday & the nice young lady done the upgrade and said you will need to reboot, however after rebooting, no Internet connection at all and when I rang back, they had shut shop for the day, so could not get online at all last night. Rang them at 8am on the dot this morning, they checked and said "oh yes there was an error, but it should be ok now, reboot again and it should be alright".
After a few reboots, yes it came back, yippee.

I've phoned customer services several times today eventually I've been told that I can't have an upgrade from 1.5 to 3 MB until at least April 4th and there's nothing they can do. This is through Samsung STB btw.

The temptation to cancel is rising within me again.

I am in Manchester (Didsbury/Withington)

But why?

The upgrades were due to take place FROM March 8th.

Not everyone can be done at once, the logistics of that should be obvious.

If you want to cancel, then cancel. Make sure you ask your replacement ISP to upgrade your speed at no extra cost though.....and make sure if they do, they do everyone on the network at the exact same moment.

Ironically, if you cancel, you need to give 30 days notice, by which time you'll have the new speed anyway......

Actually I have personal reasons for this which I don't want to discuss in a public forum. Whilst trying to convey my frustration, I may not have given out all the details, so apologies for that. What I would also really actually like are the answers to 2 questions.

1. If I was a brand new customer, connecting today at the same property, I would probably have been sold the 3Mb service. Would I get the 1.5Mb instead?
2. I want to know if anyone else in my local area has been upgraded if they are a STB broadband customer.

That's why I posted.
PS. One of the agents I spoke to informed me that the reason he couldn't do the upgrade was because of an IT error in the billing system. There was no mention of this area being a problem.

I'd do it for you, except I don't know 100% that there aren't any issues that would stop it from working. They seem very keen on telling set top box customers that it's got to be done automatically, and I am concerned there may be a very valid reason for this....

The STB fiasco is due to lack of pre-planning on NTLââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s part. They could have contacted Pace box customers, well before the upgrade, explaining the situation and that if they wanted to go to 2Meg theyââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢d have to change their box. Now if their was a lack of boxes, which is not the customers fault, then they should have told customers that theyââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢d upgrade them to 1Meg and charge them the 1Meg price until they were given a Samsung box. It strikes me that itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s quite unjust of NTL to expect people to pay the same as someone in the same street, on 2Meg, just because they were unfortunate to have a Pace box. I did suggest this to NTL but it just fell on deaf ears.:td:

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Hmm, well that didn't go well. I called them up to get the upgrade. The lady immediately cancelled my current one, and then I worriedly mentioned that I had a pace box, and she said I would have to be without net access for a month as she couldn't put my old access back on because they have got rid of the old product codes.

Well in the end she managed to get me back on the new 1Mbit service rather than the 2Mbit service (I guess she just downgraded my service so i'm now paying for the cheaper one). Does anyone know what this will actually mean for my cap limits? I am going to get through the 3gb/m limit vvv quickly and it is not my choice to be on this low package so it seems a little harsh if they block my access or something? Anyone know if NTL are actually doing any enforcing of the cap yet?

This was never practical because of the uncertain timescales over the upgrades.

It's not just a matter of pressing a switch and the entire network is upgraded you know.

It has been done right and it's been done responsibly and professionally.

Nobody ever said all the upgrades would be done on March 8th. That's when they STARTED.

I'll tell you what, all those who insist this has been handled badly, why not make a stand and insist that on principle you are refusing the FREE speed upgrade as you don't want something that's been planned as badly as this?

Any takers? Naah, THORT NOT!

I guess you have until 'later in the year' to get your problem sorted, thats when the 1mb will be capped, so unless the stb malarkey drags on for some time, you should be ok.

I can't understand all these people being told they won't get a Samsung STB until next month,I was on the phone to NTL for less than 5 minutes and I'm getting my Samsung STB on Tuesday.

Is it to do with what part of the country you live in?

Sssshhhhh

Wait until he arrives with the box before you say you are getting one.

You may find he turns up not knowing what you need a box for with a new shinny Pace in hand

Do you work for NTL by any chance? You seem to be very supportive of them. What is wrong with people paying the correct amount for the speed their using? Itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s not the customers fault that they cantââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ receive the 2meg?

Do you have a problem with someone from NTL posting on here ?, Just so you understand I work for them.

Are you paying for the service you signed up for or are you already being billed for the new speeds on your bill ?. Where have NTL stated you will get the update on X date. Please post a link to that info.

Can we calm down people it doesn't matter if any member works for NTL or not the bottom line is they said the speed upgrades was from 8th March not on they also said STB would be a little later if you can't wait ask for a SACM and then you can have the upgrade otherwise wait till they can do you all automatically.

Please don't make it personal those who are members working for NTL cannot change anything NTL do.

hiya

what has likely happened is that you have changed your email password since your service was first installed. That new password works with your email address, but is not the one the update script is looking for - it has to be the original password you had when first connected.

a similar thing happens with the webspace - changing the email password doesn't update the webspace login password, which still wants the 'old' one to allow login.

- as far as I know only Technical Support can fix this, not Customer Services, but I'm happy to be proved wrong ;)

No I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have a problem with anyone from NTL posting here, LOL. I am as it stands, now, but once my area is upgraded, I wont! You seem to be missing the point all Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m saying is once the above happens I should be paying for the speed I receive. I canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t see how you think itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s right that someone next door could be receiving 2megs because they have the correct equipment but through no fault of my own I cannot. As I said before all it would have taken is some pre-planning.

sorry, but with respect, I think you are missing the point - this upgrade has been planned and that plan is now being executed.

There never ever was going to be a way that NTL could flick a switch & upgrade everyone at once, no matter how good the planning.

Undeniably, it is a pain for the people still waiting, but short of equipping everyone with an STB with a Samsung, whether they need one, or not, I can't see any other way to do it. (and this would still take time to do)

It would have been nice for them to send the anticipated letter to stb users explaining what was happening & get some feedback, sooner than they have, though :)

Anyway, I asked to be put on 1MB, but I don't see any difference in my download speed. Is there a good way to check I am on the 1mb service, without calling Tech support or CS again?

Hi, I didnââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t say everyone should or would be upgraded at once, we all understand theirââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s going to be a roll out. But the most frustrating part of this exercise, is not knowing which areas are being upgraded, plus the STB fiasco. I know for instance there are some who have been upgraded, via postings, within my area. If they contacted Pace STB users prior to the upgrade they would have known who and who didnââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t want to go beyond the 1meg limit. That would then have give an indication of the STBââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s needed. But instead what we have now is people ringing up and being told †˜you canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have one until at least 4th April and then there may be 2 week wait for it to be installed. This does not make for good customer service!

Just re-tried it from the source as suggested

Fri, 11 Mar 2005 21:38:10 UTC
1st 128K took 3610 ms = 36308 Bytes/sec = approx 302 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 9031 ms = 14514 Bytes/sec = approx 121 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 8531 ms = 15364 Bytes/sec = approx 128 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 4625 ms = 28340 Bytes/sec = approx 236 kbits/sec

Does that look like 1mb to you guys?

yes, I agree with you there, in principle, but, I do still wonder about the practicality of it, a little. I wonder what percentage of people would change their mind in the time between completing the survey, and installation, or move house, go bankrupt - lol , you get the picture :) - my point being that ntl will have expended a huge effort and still not have got it right, for everyone. :)

No, this is

Code:

Fri, 11 Mar 2005 22:13:58 GMT
1st 128K took 1062 ms = 123420 Bytes/sec = approx 1027 kbits/sec

I'd just like to say to whoever is arguing about not being able to receive 2mb for whatever reason, its the same with adsl and line length, can you complain if you cannot receive the same service as somebody who can for the same price due to technical reasons?

Don't think so, as far as i've seen for high speed bb, they don't offer any compensation if you can't receive the quoted speed.

Shuntis 11-03-2005 21:40

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

This may or may not have been touched on, I've tried searching but I can't find it... I tried to upgrade my connection today, I had to do it over the phone however, as I have been on ntl BB for so long that I don't have a username and password to do it over the web...

I still have the old 3com U.S. Robotics CMX Cable Modem which has been fine (apart from the last year or so I sometimes get a disconnection for 5 to 10 seconds and then it comes back - any help on that would be appreciated too?) - Anyway, will me having this old modem cause me any problems with the upgrade, as of yet I have seen no sign of the upgrade but the woman on the phone said it could take up to 24 hours but other people I have spoken to it has either been almost instant or within the hour and it's been around 9 hours now...

I have tried a full reset (using the small hole at the back of the modem to flush the memory as far as I know) but nothing has changed as of yet... I will unplug the cable modem tonight over night and see if it makes any difference in the morning...

I'm on 750k supposed to be going to 2mb

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

I am on the side of those who say sit back and wait. I have a STB (pace) so am still on 750 going to 2mb next month but I have always found that 750 is plenty for me. I remember starting on the internet with a 33k modem so just 750 and we are all crying....come on give them a chance, would you have preferred nobody getting upgraded until everyone can go fast then have to put up with not getting through to CS with all the customers phoning for help. At least this way it is smoother.

NTL would have a pretty good idea of how many STBs needed changing. They know who has got broadband through a Pace STB and what speed they are on. It is a fairly valid assumption that users on the 300k service will either want to stay on that or move to 1Mb. Both of these options don't require aSTB change. Users on 750k and 1.5Mb will certainly want the upgrade. So the sum is quite simple, count the number of Pace broadband users on 750k and 1.5Mb and that total equals the number of STBs to change. I have no idea what that number may be but would imagine it to be quite substantial. NTL may have only decided on these new upgrades some six months ago or less which may not have given enough lead time to enable Samsung to manufacture all those extra boxes. They wouldn't have had them sitting in the stores waiting. From what has been posted already in this thread it could be that deliveries from Samsung may be taking place on the 4th April which is why that date has often been quoted. An upgrade such as what NTL are doing cannot be done overnight and has to be spread over a period of time. Some have to be first and some have to be last. The start date of 8th March was possibly chosen because of the progress of infrastructure upgrades and the delivery dates from Samsung.

Don't be telling me things like that just as the weekend's starting...

I should hope a Samsung is on the way as I specifically mentioned to CS that my STB will need upgrading so I can get the 2MB service.

If not, I fear there will be a lot of claret spilt... :D  :D ;) ;)

God I had a weird dream last night, I dreamt I received this letter/email from NTL:

†˜Dear customer, our records show that you have a Pace STB. As you know there is going to be a broadband speed increase over the next few weeks. You may be aware that your STB can only take the speed increase of1Meg. If you would like to have your speed increased beyond that, could you please register your interest at this sight, www.ntlgoodsupport.com?

If we are unable to supply you with a Samsung STB during your area upgrade, possibly due to high demand. We will upgrade you to the 1Meg speed and charge you at that rate until we can supply you with the correct STB. We do apologise for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Yours Sincerely

NTL Customer Servicesââ‚à ƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢

Then I woke up and realised it was a dream. Oh well maybe one day!

Hi, relatively new here but have been lurking for a good while and everyone seems very keen on helping others. Top stuff.

Hopefully someone can help me, i have already posted it but i guess because loads of people are posting it just got lost.

Anyway, I rang cs the other day to find out about when the automatic upgrades for swindon would be applied. Obviously there was no fixed date, i asked for them to do it straight away. Now i know that it would be possible as my housemate who also has a standalone modem upgraded his through the web the day before. Now i was going to do the same but as i mentioned previously, i've been with NTL broadband since they started it and i haven't got my paperwork (my fault) and also cannot remember email addresses and passwords due to me never needing to use them.

Ok so the nice lady on the other end of the phone looked up our address. and rightly so my housemates modem was showing as upgraded to the 3mb service, however the connection that i am on at the moment 750k was showing that it was cancelled in 2003 :erm: now i mentioned that i have been recieving the service fine with no interuptions and was happy to recieve the small upgrade in speed last year from the 600k.

Because she couldn't find the details i just thought heck, ill wait until they automatically upgrade it. However reading a couple of posts here, i see there may have been a problem with automatic updates being bounced back and not being applied. If this is the case i would never know as they cant seem to find my account (which is all in my landlords name)

I even gave her my mac addresss and she said she couldn't find it!! Im just as confused as the next man and would be appreciative if someone could maybe help out. I've noticed a few NTL peeps around here, would it help if I pm'd a mac address to you.

I dont know what to do really as cs said they couldn't do anything for me because they cant find my user account.

If any more details are needed give me a holler.

Thanks in advnce.

Just keep politely ringing CS and asking for a manual upgrade.......it took me 4 tries :)
