The Star Trek trailer will be released along with Cloverfield and will probably appear online around the same time.

Talking about cloverfield - i just downloaded the high def trailer. Which seemed quite good. Mind you I kept getting reminded of the new war of the worlds.

I could be geeky and point out that they are part of the magnetic field system that works the ships Bussard ram scoop system, which us used to gather fuel in an emergency. But I don't think I will.

You can also see the scoops bring used in next gen and on the 1701e to blow up a sonar ship, I do believe that the front of the nacelles on the e also wobble due to the presence of the "turbine blades"

The site still says it's supposed to be showing in 2007. I'm not sure what to think of it. The only thing that would get me to give it a chance is that it has Claudia Christian in it.

I recall the Bussard collectors, it's just the whole concept of moving parts in a Starfleet starship engine... it just seems so... primitive.

The Bussard ramscoop collectors are used to gather hydrogen to replenish the fuel systems. They are not only used in emergencies.

See here full info
Quote:

the main function a Starfleet Bussard collector is to collect interstellar hydrogen atoms for fuel replenishment. The device consists of a set of coils which generate a magnetic field. Collected gases are compressed and stored into holding tanks.

None of which would explain the use of moving parts in the form of what looks like turbine blades in the trailer.

Some things, maybe. The universal translator issue is probably similar to why they didn't bother inventing a new language for every alien species in Stargate: it would be too much hassle/effort. But when it comes to physically representing something that even someone with a basic knowledge of physics knows is silly, when it would be simpler & less effort to represent something more feasible [e.g. field coils], it just makes no sense.

Xaccers 22-01-2008 19:43

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other Snippets

It's the laws of physics, pass a current through a magnetic field and you get motion, it's how motors work.
Obviously as the hydrogen atoms get pulled in, the magnetic field strips them of their electrons making them ions, which carry a charge.
Simple really.

I know that's how motors work, but what I'm saying is that the whole concept of turbine blades in a vacuum is silly. You could draw the hydrogen atoms in without any moving parts, using energy to rotate the turbine blades would be pointless. Sure, they might hit & deflect the trajectory of the occasional atom, but otherwise they'll be just a waste of space, materials, & energy.

Think of it like this: aircraft that use propellers can only work up to a certain altitude [I don't happen to know what it is off the top of my head], because the air is just too thin. Yet even at those high altitudes the air is orders of magnitude more dense than the distribution of hydrogen atoms in space.

Stephen 22-01-2008 20:04

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other Snippets

But having the moving parts create the magnetic field would probably be correct. Also the moving parts look more cool than no moving parts.

You're thinking about it the wrong way round.
The turbines (which they aren't, and in the picture they don't even look like they move, but I'll humour you ;) ) don't spin and suck in hydrogen, they are spun by the protons (hydrogen ions) being drawn in through the magnetic field, just as a motor spins when electrons are passed through a magnetic field.

Think of an electrical circuit with a lightbulb and a motor in series.
In order for the lightbulb to turn on, current must first pass through the motor, which causes it to spin.
The motor spinning doesn't cause the light bulb to light up, it's a byproduct of the current moving through a magnetic field on the way to power the bulb.

Enterprise - S4 confirmed - but will be the last unless viewing figures improve.

Andromeda - S5 should have started filming on May 25th.

Babylon 5 - Rumours of a film are very strong - still awaiting confirmation from JMS.

Stargate - The Atlantis spin-off debuts on the Sci-Fi channel in July. The main series Season 8 also lauches in July.

Dr Who - The BBC have (apparently) settled with Terry Nations estate to allow the Daleks to appear in the new series. The first episode "aliens" are rumoured to be the Autons.

Firefly - A film ("Serenity") with all the cast is in production.

Battlestar Galatica - The series in in production for a 2005 debut.

Dead Like Me - Series 2 is in production for (I think) the Autumn.

Charmed - Rumoured that Season 8 will be the last, not bad considering that S7 hasn't launched yet !.

On a side note - Both incarnations of one of my favourite baddies - "The "Master" from Dr Who - are now deceased. Roger Delgado (the original) died in the early 1970's - His replacement (Anthony Ainsley) passed away a few weeks ago - he was 71.

As am I, mind you I'm not getting bogged down in the 'anomalies' between this series & the films & am just enjoying what I think is a good Sci-Fi drama in its own right - I think 'Enterprise' suffered from the same problem, with people not judging it on it's merits, but endlessly comparing with the other series.

I'm afraid I do expect research into the history of the Star Trek universe to be done and to be respected which too many of the writers of different series failed to do especially those of the Enterprise series. It's like someone coming along and changing Dr Who's history for the sake of convenience without even giving a reason as to why.It wouldn't be accepted in other forms of drama such as costume drama or soaps.

I don't disagree, per se, but I don't think it should be a hindrance to enjoying the program - quite ironic if you think about it, that we expect a fictional world to conform to such 'tight' protocols :)

- as for Doctor Who, hasn't that debate about the Master & the Doctor & the number of re-incarnations already occurred ;)

It's just the fact that it's deemed ok in SF and Fantasy series to do this BUT when it comes to mainstream drama it would be deemed as crass not to get basic facts straight.Trouble is I'm still fighting the 'SF is a viable literary genre' battle against a world that still regards it as poor pulp fiction.:(

According to the SFcrowsnest the SciFi Channel has commissioned a 13 episode series of the 'Sanctuary' program, featuring Amanda Tapping, which has previously aired as a 'Web only' taster. It seems likely it will continue in the predominately CGI based genre, however, the success of Beowulf seems to suggest that may not count against it??

But it was mentioned in the movie, more than once...

I've never read the novel, but I know the movie is meant to be very different.

The movie, to me, came across as more than simply guts & gore, & had very interesting satire (also like Paul Verhoeven & Ed Neumeier's earlier RoboCop).

The Citizen/Civilian thing, the fascist military regime running the Federation, the rather Nazi-esque uniforms, the war itself, the MI itself...

Just checking Wikipedia...

On the same commentary, screenwriter Ed Neumeier (who had previously worked with Verhoeven on RoboCop) broadly concurs, although he sees the satire as applying to the whole of human history, rather than solely to the U.S.

Since the filmmakers did not make these statements at the time of the film's release, viewers have interpreted it variously: as a satire, as a celebration of fascism, or as a simple tongue-in-cheek action film.

Unfortunately I think perhaps the message was just too subtle for most and went over a lot of heads.I would imagine it was never even considered in number 2 at all.

Starship Troopers was a comic masterpiece. I watched it with the missus and her dad, we rolled about laughing. But, as you say, probably too subtle for many. :erm:

The Sci-Fi channel have picked up the mini web series Sanctuary for a full 13 episode season.

As a result of Amanda Tapping doing the above, Carter will not be in charge for season 5 of Atlantis - instead, Woolsey will become the expedition leader. Also, Daniel Jackson will make several guest appearances, and Carson Beckett will be in five episodes. Elizabeth Weir is not expected to make any appearances.

The new Star Trek Movie, which was due at Xmas this year has now been postponed to May 2009.

The Sarah Jane Adventures has been renewed for a 12 episode season 2.

Pushing Daisies will return in the Autumn with a 13 episode Season 2

Heroes will return in the Autumn for Season 3, expected to be 22 episodes.

Battlestar Season 4 is likely to be split into two 10 episode blocks - the first 10 in April and the final 10 in the Autumn or Early 2009.

---------- Post added at 17:37 ---------- Previous post was at 17:34 ----------

Primeval has been renewed for a 10 episode Season 3

Have you seen any of the Sanctuary web episodes? Any good? I had a look at the wikipedia entry yesterday & it sounds quite interesting.

No Weir in SGA... agh, so what are they going to do about the whole "Weir in charge of an Aurora class Replicator ship" thing, seen midway through season 4.

Yes, Ive watched all eight of the mini eps, and they were quite good. I'll be tuning in for the series.

No idea what they'll do about the replicator ship.

Hmm, I'll give it a watch, then.

Hopefully SGA will deal with the Weir plot somehow, rather than leaving it unresolved.

They seem to have set her up with a classic 'returning guest star' role. I don't think we've seen the last of her.

Well, that's they thing. It looks like we have :(

They *had* said she'd be returning in season 5.... for an important on-going arc, carrying on things from halfway through season 4 when she made that last & brief surprise appearance.

However the actress, Torri Higginson, then turned down the chance to return to SGA, & is now not going to be in season 5.

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2008/0...son_five.shtml

Maybe they'll manage to get her for season 6, who knows.

But from reading that story, it sounds like she may not have been too happy about her drastically reduced role in season 4 (after having previously signed a 6 year deal & relocated to Vancouver at the start, had 3 years as a main cast member, only to then be relegated to "recurring" with only 4 episodes in a whole season).

It starts off average for the first half of the season, the last six or seven episodes are much better (there are 21 episodes).

New V movie and mini series?

Quote:

We're in the process to do a remake of the original mini-series first as a theatrical feature, which I'm so jazzed about because it will give me an opportunity to really realize it and execute it in a way that was impossible to do back then. Then that will lead to the obvious sequel, because it is a franchise, and then we'll get into The Second Generation and I'm hoping we'll be able to do two movies, because there's certainly enough material in the novel to warrant two separate sequels. That's my goal at this point and that's what we're in the process of doing. I just literally came from a meeting, 15-20 minutes ago with a fellow in Beverly Hills who really says that we're gonna do it.
