Can you not buy the car off them?

Did you have to accept their offer, when negotiating you could have asked for the car to be included then

Normally a class D write-off (damaged but repairable) you can claim the salvage for a nominal sum and then use second hand parts to repair it.

They write cars off on the basis of how much a perfect repair by a garage or bodyshop costs.

Yes we had to accept their offer TD as they never gave us that alternative as you have stated as were were talking to our neighbour last night about it as her son had to do the same without any say whatsoever in it as the insurance companies seem to be increasingly doing this in regards to older cars from what our cousin hears.

Have a read here about write offs, to see what your options are because legally the car is still yours until the claim is settled.

Bummer - car just chronically failed the MOT - chassis corrosion.

Just put new tyres on it less than 1 month ago and we don't have much cash spare at this time so looking for a replacement (Mondeo size) for a couple of years.

Had hoped it would have lasted another year or so to when mortgage is paid off but there you go.

heero_yuy 18-01-2019 17:28

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

How extensive is the corrosion? I had the Metro jacking point that had caused corrosion of the floor-pan patched for only £70 locally and that involved removing the "U" channel, welding on a patch and then re-attaching the "U" channel and re-undersealing.

Some simple patching might be quite cheap.

Car needs a new battery. It's getting so weak that the dash lights go off and on when cranking and the computer resets. Still 9 years out of a battery isn't that bad.

Yes batteries on average tend to on average last about 10 years heero so that ain't bad.

Couple of ex-colleagues (ex-Royal Signals / ex-RAF) suffer from this, due to wearing headphones for work for 10+years, and they say having music on in the background (can be quite low volume) helps.

There is no cure for Tinnitis i have always had it, usually it doesn't bother me but occasionally it bugs the hell out of me and it takes a day or 2 to settle down, basically i will just wakeup 1 day and it won't be as annoying.

I still never know what triggers it to get worse.

You should go and see your doctor if you have never had it before.

Software updates. BitTorrent updated today to a new version that has yet to be authenticated by my private tracker so I've had to spend time rolling it back and now I've lost the current torrents. Hopefully re-authenticating the actual downloads and reconnecting them to the .torrent files will fix it.

I've located and saved the registry key that controls which version is loaded so if it happens again I can just restore the key rather than rolling back the install.

I bought something from Japan on Ebay for my partner, it is a Japanese figure toy costing $34, but i have been handed a grey card for delivery saying i need to pay £14 customs charge of £5ish VAT and £8ish handling charge.

I have never had to pay a customs charge on anything before and i have ordered similar items in the past, so my questions are...

1. Is it random as to whether you get stung for import duty?
2. Is there always a handling charge and how can i avoid this charge in the future?

IIRC there's a £25 threshold before customs etc start to look at foreign orders. I had to pay VAT on some T-shirts that came from the states and pay the post office for the privilege of them doing it for me and then holding the parcel 'til I paid.

Just got this off the post office website, is it a case of always paying or only if they decide to check?

Any goods imported into the UK over the value of £15 are liable for import VAT.
Gifts between private individuals over the value of £39 are also liable for VAT. Goods and gifts over these values may also be liable for customs duty.

heero_yuy 06-02-2019 08:47

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

I think it depends on how the goods are classed. I've had stuff from China that has been shown as zero value and "Gift" despite being significant in value.

One particular post. Nothing wrong with the post as such, but I was trying to reply. The first time I replied, I typed a long explanation and accidentally hit the Refresh key. The second, I typed an edited version of the reply, then got called away to do something else. When I got back to my Mac, the Mac appeared to have gone into power saving mode. I hit a couple of keys and waited (this particular Mac takes up to a minute to come out of sleep mode for some reason), still nothing.. Hit a couple more keys, noticing that the caps lock light was responding (often a good test of a hung computer). After 30 seconds, the Mac rebooted..

Not sure if I can be bothered to type the reply out a third time. Will see how I feel later.

Plenty saying Cheltenham will be cancelled, including one bookie offering odds on it being called off. I can't see it myself as there's nowhere else in the calender for it, I do think a lot of the racecards will be hard to pick though due to the horses being well undercooked, should be interesting, the ante posts alone will be a nightmare and I've got quite a few of those already...

l believe if the Cheltenham festival was cancelled which l don't personally think it will be l hear there is a plan from the BHA to run it 2 weeks later.

On the Ante post market many of the bookies are offering NRNB now so if the horse does not turn it punters get their bet refunded.

Well the insurance decided that I was not at fault all I can say is thank goodness for dash cam and the report my eldest wrote.

Still can't believe the fibs this guy told even when it was decided he was at fault he changed his story to say it was my hubby whom was driving crazy as he was 20 miles away at his work at the time. Honestly this guy told one lie after another really opened my eyes especially as when I had my other accident a couple of years ago i put my hands up and admitted fault straight away why lie when something is clearly your fault but I thought him saying hubby was driving was an absolute belter tbh.

Not really looking forward to today as I have some things that is needed to be said to someone but needs must for my own sanity. Yes it is going to difficult but as I say needs must because I have the feeling that two certain people will try and do what happened two years ago.

I will never allow myself to be emotionally abused or made the scapegoat ever again, I think a shock is coming today (I know I am SHOCKED at having the courage to do what needs done) I now know that out the three of us I'm the far the strongest and better person and never realized that while under their spell.

I now know that I have always been the stronger one as I have never resorted to bullying, emotional blackmail nor raised voices with bad language.

Today will be one of my greatest challenges in regards to my decision to stop being a doormat.

So it turns out my little smelly wonky legged old boy has a chest infection, wasn't allowed directly into the vets, powder to go on his food and we see how he is in a coupe of weeks.

He celebrated the news by peeing all down my wifes jumper :D :D :D

You can and you will, help is there Mark all you need to do is ask and imo you've already done that in a way by posting your inner thoughts and that is very brave indeed.

Remember any fight can be one Mark even the ones that seem as hard as climbing Everest.

Also remember you can PM any of us if you need to talk to someone.

Well all packed to go away for our anniversary only to find out my eldest has been called on away for work so he will be away for 2 nights so our youngest will be on his own for one night. I'm worried sick and wanted to cancel but he does not want me and his Dad to cancel as he said he will be 17 on May and tbh he is a sensible young man so I need to trust him and I do, I really do but will still worry.

I have let neighbours know and our friends two doors down is going to take him to school plus keep a check on him, plus I'm certain so will hubby's family.

Why do I feel like a bad parent leaving him.

---------- Post added at 10:36 ---------- Previous post was at 09:56 ----------

I do trust him 100% feeling better about it now my future daughter in law is going to check in on him as is his Aunt and Uncle plus it is only for one night. I did say he could have a friend stay and he said he and I quote none of his friends will know he has a empty.

My parents left me alone in the house when I was 17 to go on holiday as I had a part time job in a shop and they also didn't want to take the dog with them. I managed OK. I'm sure he'll be alright.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom it is what hubby has said anyway I went out and bought frozen roast potatoes, chilled bells the bakers steak pie and we're going to leave him money for his lunch etc when he at school.

Just a pity his brother has been called on a case up north but his hands are tied.

I just need to accept the situation and the fact he wants to stay at home plus as hubby says he can regularly check our house on CCTV.

I was left home at 17 when parents went abroad for 2 weeks, he considers himself independent at that age and won't want his parents fussing over him, so time to let go and don't be over protective, if he makes mistakes he will learn from them.

The ****wit who installed our kitchen a couple of years back.

A few years ago, we needed a new kitchen. We bought one from Ikea, and as we'd had a handyman who was apparently qualified to fit kitchens, and he'd proved to be quite reliable, I didn't bother going through Ikea to fit it.

We picked up the kitchen, and took it home. There was enough boxes that it filled our handyman's Transit.

Months later, and after a lot of chasing, we managed to get him back to fit the kitchen. This went on for months, and we eventually got to the point where we had a sort of workable kitchen. He'd completed the cabinets, cooker and sink, just needed to finish the cabinets, put some tiles up and paint. At that point, he started not bothering to turn up, so we eventually kicked him off the job and got another company in to complete it. They did a good job, generally, even fixing a couple of problems he left.

Then, a couple of months ago, the cabinet holding the oven and the cabinet next to it started to sink. I investigated and found he'd only put a leg on the oven cabinet, not the other cabinet and he'd just bolted them together. Ikea require that you put legs on BOTH cabinets, and bolt them together. I put the missing leg in, and it looks like the ****er has damaged the bases of BOTH cabinets. I've now got to look at getting someone in to fix the cabinets. If one of the cabinets didn't happen to have a gas oven and hob in it, I'd be happy to repair both..

Just wishing I'd gone with getting Ikea to fit the kitchen now. Even though that would have cost a lot, and would likely have had other problem, at least it would have been fitted properly.

Sympathies, hope you get it sorted if possible. It's difficult to find reputable tradespeople or mechanics.... We found our builder through rated people, but it's still a risk.

We have a banging noise in our kitchen mostly when we run the cold tap. I was informed it was a Airlock in the pipes, Not sure how much this will cost as we have two council Tennants and Four bought houses in our flats, but I know the council are really robbers when we ask their prices,

To rid the system of airlocks I used to start upstairs toilet, bath, sink then downstairs opening each tap in turn for @2min then closing.

If it's not that it could be "water hammer" comes from pipes that have a degree of movement and conspire with the tap washer to make a regular banging noise. Changing the washer sometimes cures it and/or finding the pipes that can move.

I had something similar with the toilet, as the tank filled and the flow diminished there started up a steady tone. Here just an extra clamp on the incoming water pipe stopped it.

I am in a low down flat with two houses above me, We all run our cold water for half an hour at te same time, But it only helped slightly, So which was has the problem we do not know, If we do not get someone to fix the council will, but they are robbers

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST....

I was put in a bit of a dilemma last Friday to cut a long story my Dad asked me to apply for aids for him about the house as he sold the stair lift, and got rid of the other aids just after Mum passed away this was my sisters idea and I thought it was crazy at the time tbh but I was weak then and kept my own thoughts to myself although as usual I did rant on here and bless you all for allowing me to have my rants :) anyway I did as Dad had requested and I applied for these aids about a month ago.

Last Friday I called my Dad to say that a meeting has been arranged for his assessment and he asked if I could be there and I said ok so all was going well then my Dad called saying that my sister is going to be there, now remember I have not seen nor spoken since June 2017 and trust me this is for best, well for me anyway so I needed to decide what to do, do I do what is best for me or do I risk my health both mentally and physically and go along with it.

Needless to say that hubby was not pleased at me even considering going or my sister expecting me to be in the same room as her with all that she has done to myself and my family.

I really needed to take my families feelings into the equation as hubby feared for my well being & health plus I needed to listen to my eldest son as he said Mum please don't go, I'm begging you as I honestly think you will be a lamb to the slaughter.

Anyway long story short I never went to my Dad's for his assessment and apparently my sister was not to pleased when she discovered that I said there is no point in us both being there.

Why is this a moan and pet hate well because when will SHE realize that my business with her is done and dusted!

Saying all this I was torn at what to for the best and at the end of the day although this may sound harsh but my hubby and two boy's must come first along with my own health even if that's before my Dad's wishes.

Yes I survived being torn in two

Oh weenie I wish I could give you a hug.

It is said that you can't choose your family and to a certain extent that is true. You may have a Father and a Sister who don't deserve you but what you do have is the family that you chose, A great husband and two sons who love you and protect you and that is the best thing in this world.

Jo xx

Water board came out today and it turned out that my stopcock had not been fully turned on,,, Thank the Lord the banging is stopped and I did not need to call the council as their bills are sky high,

With the main stop cock it's important to not have it on the fully open stop but about 1/4 to 1/2 turn away from it. Otherwise they can get jammed and then when it's important to turn off the water you might not be able to.

Talk about being made to feel thick when your child asks you a question that you just cannot answer, well that happened to me today when I picked my youngest up from school here is how our conversation went.
Question Hi Mum how was day Answer good son
Question Mum can you explain Brexit to me
Answer I can't
then he asked me: Mum do you at least understand Brexit and unfortunately I had to admit that I must me thick because I don't and tbh I'm glad he found this amusing and we had a right chuckle about it, all the while thinking why did you need to ask me to explain something I don't understand LOL
