Keep your money in your pockets at the moment, 4K doesnt look like its about to take off soon.

"it would seem that Britain's TV companies are very reluctant to embrace Ultra HD as a format."

"Geffen goes further, suggesting that it's now Sky taking the broadcast technology high road. "The investment that they have put into 3D and subsequently 4K, is enormous. Sky is now doing what the BBC once did some time ago."

"All the broadcasters are keeping their plans close to their chest," he admits. "I'm sure though at some point 4K will come to Sky, because they're all about customer desire. However at the moment Netflix and other internet delivered outlets are beating everyone else to it."

This is i'm guessing means 4K is a long way from VM's mind

I certainly wouldn't be investing in 4K kit just yet.

I'm not even sure I'd bother investing in new equipment myself, the difference isn't as much as it was between SD (which can be terrible) and HD.

Sky will push it obviously, and then launch all their HD channels in 4K and keep them as exclusives and the process starts again.

It's a brave move from Sky if they do because we haven't completely moved away from SD yet. If all channels were in HD and it was fully established, I would say go for it. Just can't see 4K really picking up for a few more years, but by then the next thing would have come along.

Where would this leave VM? Do they plan for 4K or do they try to think ahead with what's after. It's a tough one.

Movies in 4k would be a real stumbling block, many studios are loathe to let home owners own almost master quality copies of their property, it's the reason no real physical delivery format is available.
Another reason 4k might not launch in uk is 8k is on the horizon...

No Viacom / Channel 5 news has been confirmed yet - I think Viacom still need go ahead to take over Channel 5.

Here is my own view on what may happen to Channel 5: http://mediaboyblog.blogspot.co.uk/2...m-do-with.html

Maybe old boy, most of us thought we would never get sport and news channels in HD from sky (the missing ones) and virgin did a deal to get them so I am more optimistic (and if some of the rumors come true there won't be much different with sky.

If VM and Sky were to offer the same channels, this wouldn't damage Sky at all. They would be opening their channels to a wider audience meaning they could earn more revenue.

People are a lot more money conscious now. If customers are moving between Sky and VM every 18months to make use of the half price deals, it makes sense for both companies to offer the same. Sky will earn money from their own customers and from VM for taking more channels off them.

All so this would hurt BT chances of making inroads into both companies market share

Exactly Blue...Sky wants BT to fail. VM being the middle man can only benefit from both of them.

Sky might as well hand VM the channels now lol :D
