Which would you prefer, FA Cup win, or qualifying for champion's league.

For me, qualifying for champion's league. Only as i recognise not doing so, means you fall further behind (and I like to watch champion's league)

It's not even close, the only two competitions that matter are the league and champions league, end of, the fa cup still has a little bit of the old romance about it but the league cup is about as worth winning for the big clubs as the charity shield

Yes I would rather qualify for the Champions League and people do underestimate how great it is for the fans to have those big European nights. It's dismissed as merely a money making exercise and real fans would rather win things but I think real fans want to watch football, and they want to watch big games.

Of course I want to win the FA Cup as well but if it was a choice, top 4 all the way.

Has to be Champions League I'm afraid to say. At the same time I still love the FA Cup and all that goes with it and still wanna win it. Have done for as long as I can remember and it's annoying on one hand that a lot of teams field weakened teams for it, but exciting on the other one when the underdogs seize their chance against them.

TBH 90% of defenders would have ended up bringing Messi down from the positions they were in.

Yeah Messi is a nightmare. I remember when Arsenal played Barcelona a few years ago, we were hacking him down, pushing him over, pulling him back but whatever we did the ball stuck to him and he kept going. Short of FIFA legalising the use of bazookas on the pitch he is almost unstoppable.

Yup tough ask for City now but stranger things have happened. They would need to stop Barcelona scoring though.

I am off to Arsenal tomorrow. Quite a nice prospect really, massive game, will have a good atmosphere, and if we lose then no one would be too disappointed as 1) it's Munich 2) we have a better chance in the League and FA Cup.

With just a tiny bit more luck City would have scored, they did create several chances. Getting Aguero back will help but having to go for it from the off at Camp Nou will leave them vulnerable at the back.

Genuinely interested to know at what point fans will stop blaming the board and blame the manager for their lack of silverware.

What a goal,

The inflexible strict rules might say it was a red card but common sense should prevail more with these incidents but sadly for the betterment of the game it does not and thus the game is ruined then as a spectacle.

No as far as l am concerned a yellow card would suffice as personally l think these decisions ruin the game as a spectacle and at the end of the day that's what most supporters want to see.

It could also be argued that a blatant foul that prevents a clear goal scoring opportunity spoils the game as a spectacle as well. And some of the most exciting games I have seen have been watching 10 v 11. It doesn't always follow that a sending off ruins the game.

He was right to send him off but that rule is one of the worst in football in my opinion. A player is brought down denying a goal scoring opportunity, but a penalty is given which is a goal scoring opportunity, so the goal scoring opportunity isn't denied. Why should they be given a red card as well and punished twice? Anywhere else on the pitch where its not a goal scoring opportunity its a yellow card or just a foul, i don't know why that should change.

Many players have had a red card as the last man and not been in the box so no penalty given in those cases.;)

Damien 19-02-2014 22:15

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

It was a penalty and so it then had to be a red card. However the rule is harsh. Both players went for the ball, there was no intent to foul, and the keeper tried to pull out of the challenge when the ball went out of reach. It is harsh to reduce a team to 10 men for that. It's not even as if the chance was that clear. I was behind the goal and thought Robben had already taken a shot.

Watching the many replays it looked to me as though Robben would have got to the ball after nudging it past the keeper if he hadn't been clipped, the through ball was class though.

My impression was that he tried to knock it out of the way when he saw scez coming. His foot was quite high a he didn't have control of the ball, it was a bit too high and a bit too far. Doesnt really matter now, what's done is done and you've seen those given before so it's not like it was a massive injustice.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

He didn't try to knock it out of the way , he succeeded in clipping it over the keepers leg but was then caught by the keeper as he followed through, nothing malicious but he did take him out and personally I think Robben would have got to the ball, there wasn't a lot of pace on it.

As with City last night, that second goal was a real blow.:(

and shouldn't have been sent of either unless a clear goal scoring opportunity was prevented, last man is irrelevant, it's all about goal scoring opportunities regardless of how many men are left.

Yes, then it should be a red card because there is no longer a clear goal scoring opportunity. Like I said, the ref made the right decision last night and in the city game, but in my opinion that rule is unfair and in both instances a yellow card and a penalty is a fair punishment.

I don't think the city penalty was in the box. Not complaining, because offcials have a hard enough job, but as you mentioned "fair", that calls into question the decision.

It carried on into the box and he was sort of clear away. I mean I think they were both pens but an example than the red card might be a bit too harsh a punishment. Maybe the refs could decide if the foul was cynical, therefore a red, or mistimed, therefore a yellow. Might be too complicated...

Maybe. Or maybe we tweak too much. If we accept that nothing is perfect, and as long as it was a reasonable judgement call (as opposed to some sort of fix), then why sweat it.

If i was addressing something as a priority, I would have video evidence for any player cheating for a penalty, or getting a player deliberately sent off, by faking injury.

Indeed as they played pretty well last night and lets hope it continues but its still no excuse for sacking a manager by email though is it.

It's a lot of money but a fantastic statement of intent for both him and the club.

The summer will be crucial for United as they will have to attract a high calibre of player and looking at it from a independent angle l think they need at least 5 players this summer.

Yes, then it should be a red card because there is no longer a clear goal scoring opportunity. Like I said, the ref made the right decision last night and in the city game, but in my opinion that rule is unfair and in both instances a yellow card and a penalty is a fair punishment.

If they give a penalty how is the goal scoring opportunity denied, it's something they need to look at imo

Good point. As it is an opportunity to score, and has better chance of success. There is no guarantee that the person would have scored if not fouled, especially some strikers :)

Thats what i mean. There should be different rules for in and outside the box. Clear goalscoring opportunity denied in the box = yellow card and penalty. Clear goalscoring opportunity denied outside the box = red card and free kick. A free kick isn't a clear goalscoring opportunity but a penalty is.

I didn't want to get there that early! Still be great to see the man at half time.

Rumours Ozil will be rested today. He does seem tired but I wanted him to play again and pull himself up from Wednesday, the fans need to get behind him too. No booing, groaning or anything like that. Just sing him songs and cheer his name.

There is no bouncing back from the pathetic peno midweek. He needs to re-charge and bounce back in a couple of weeks when the team will need him.

Everton brought that on themselves. The chances not taken was one thing but general play was poor! Still they hung on in the game so not all bad.
