Gerrard would get the attention because he was a good player who was English, because he had traits that people view as English (he did work hard, he certainly shouted a lot and looked like he was about to punch someone most of the time) and because he would do the Hollywood pass. The pass that breaks open a defence and looks amazing but rarely comes off and instead gifts possession to the opposing team. Alonso never did that, he was the true Liverpool rival to Fabregas and Scholes. Great vision, great and effective passing, rarely loses the ball and can control a game in the same way the aforementioned players could. Great player.

Alonso is now getting the credit he does deserve as one of the key players at Real Madrid. He really is that good. Him leaving Liverpool has equivalent to Fabregas living Arsenal but Liverpool never had anyone to replace him.

It's criminal he was so overlooked.

Also Ferdinand is out of the England team for Euro 2012. Shame, always liked him. However they are concerned about his injury record.

Liverpool the best midfield in the world back then imo, mascerano, Alonso and Gerrard, with Torres up front. I'll tell you what's criminal Liverpool trying to replace Alonso with Garth Barry.

Should have been more but Owen and Berbatov were useless in the first half - Owen missing an absolute sitter.
Overall a fitting match for a Utd legend.

The mans a legend full stop, not only the best goalkeeper united ever had but also the bravest what he did in Munich should never be forgotten imo. Btw this can't be his first testimonial surly.

I tell you who else was better, Alonso.

Yes Alonso is a player who we are missing to this day.:td::(

We can criticise players, they are not immune from it because they are wrapped in the national flag.

It looks a poor squad. There are no outstanding talents in that squad.

Rooney can't play first two games, other strikers have had poor/average seasons, nothing special in midfield and John Terry is the best defender there so thats bad news too.

Players like Gerrard, Carrol and Downing being included show how poor the competition is for places.

Looks like Kenny Dalglish will no longer be Liverpool manager by the end of the day. Won't be surprising if true, wasted a lot of money that should have been enough to at least challenge the Champions League spaces, didn't conduct himself well in the press or over the racism claims.

I think it's also underestimated the damage the Suarez incident did, the owners stepped in after it got coverage in American sports news. A lot of people in the States (and frankly here, outside of Liverpool) couldn't believe the way it was handled. The t-shirts, the attacks on Evra (which remains the most pathetic aspect of the whole thing) and all the atmosphere around it.

I think that damaged his credibility in the eyes of the owners, they shouldn't be getting flack from the UK because their choice of manager can't handle it.

The owners do care, it's their investment. They view Liverpool as a business and are not quite as emotionally invested as Liverpool's fans would, understandably, like them to be.

They admit they are coming to grips with the sport and they do so from a distance but this gives them a fresh perspective on the club which is probably quite healthy. They view the money spent and the position achieved and have rightly concluded that it's not acceptable. They look at clubs that spent a lot less doing a lot better and it's not clear where the improvement is going to come from. That alongside having to deal with race issues in the US because of a lack of management from the UK has caused them to fire the manager. It's no coincidence that the director of communications and the director of football have also gone.

i view the Dalglish event in a similar way to the Mcleish sacking.

Mcleish was hired without support from the fans, purely on owners instinct.

Dalglish was largely taken based on fan support, but never thought he was best man for the job.

There is a balance, and i'm not sure it was done in both cases.

Appease the fans by all means, but ultimately it is owners money, not the fans

Now, Martinez seems to be wanted by both clubs.

Not really an issue in general but various fan groups seem to have taken offence to this and particularly the fact that US owners did this and it was done in the US.

Whilst it was nice to win a trophy l would have swapped it for a place in the Champions League to start with but also l want Liverpool to play progressive and expansive football and at the moment we are nowhere near that so yes he had to go for that and several other reasons.:)

i am not disappointed...a strong arsenal isn't a bad thing.

Man city can buy another striker :D

For next season (by the way, who will start that thread, and when?), maybe we can have Man city 1st, arsenal 2nd...and Liverpool 3rd.

Ok ok, i was only kidding about liverpool, but..stranger things have happened :D

Lets finish this season first as we have a CL final yet and remember the transfer window for next season does not open for another two weeks yet either.

So what is the source? Otherwise I'll assume it's Twitter on which all the people are crediting 'reports' without ever specifying which 'reports' these are.

I didn't say Vertonghen to Arsenal isn't dead, however the chance there still might be a deal is obvious until he signs for us or someone else. The chance of a deal is completely different to it being 'done'.

and Kagawa stolen from Utd. many different people saying different things although I suspect Arsenal have gone or will go the extra length for him with the PR aspect. Park was a disaster.

thenry, you say Guillem Balagaue is a bad source, but where you get the info you post here is 10x worse than the stuff he comes out with. Randomers on twitter are not reliable sources...

Re: Football Season 2011/12

their not random. and its not just 1 source. i read a bit before speaking.

Guillem Balagaue stories are crap. at least what i post has common sense in it. plus hes ALWAYS wrong.

Re: Football Season 2011/12

With Kagawa, Arsenal have "apparently" had a bid accepted, but United are still favourites by a distance. Fergie has met with the player himself.

yes he went to the Cup Final but dont be surprised if we nab him. Remember Ramsey. Remember Smalling. Remember Jones. Remember.... ;)

Can people stop posting things as facts if it is simply speculation. Tonight RVP has signed a new contract, we've got M'Vila and taken Kagawa from United.

Read from where? It seems to me that one person is tweeting a rumour with no substance, sources or credibility then someone else also tweets it, then people discuss it on forums and then the orignal tweeter uses the 'buzz' as evidence of the deal. It's one giant echo chamber. It needs at least one reputable source to be taken seriously.

Sky Sports News are also reporting a lack of progress in talks.

It's not looking good. :(
