The second one (already got the first one) - a friend bought it in the States when he was over there at the end of April, and let me read it when he had finished it.
It's very good. |

Re: What are you reading?
Have started reading a series by Barbara Hambly about Benjamin January freed slave in 19th Century New Orleans.
Interesting character..Educated in Oxford,a surgeon, piano player and a damned good detective but who has to know his 'place'. Currently reading The Shirt on His Back and finished Dead and Buried which I thoroughly recommend. |
Re: What are you reading?
I've just finished reading Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine.
Nothing in it is all that surprising, given capitalists' attitudes today, but believe me, it's one hell of an eye-opener. It certainly gives one a new perspective on the Iraq war, 9/11, the "War on Terror", Katrina and other crises. I wonder if the World Bank, the US Treasury and/or the International Monetary Fund are going to try shock therapy in Japan, and what'll happen if they do. Hopefully they've learned from their mistakes in the countries where it was applied but the people have since recovered from the shock. But I doubt it. |

Reading it as part of some research I'm doing and it puts a fair few things into perspective. Certainly puts you "there" brilliantly written up to now. |
