Does anyone know if the 'Copy to DVD' functionality of the V+ is planned for a future update of Tivo? Also will the latest update fix the 'connection not permitted' popup I get every morning? (apologies for not doing an extensive search but it's lunchtime at work!)

Connection reliability: HDMI and SCART compatibility improved.
No one has reported any "connection not permitted" problems since the update.

It turns out there was another fault (not the ticket number above). It was fixed last night, but you might still need another service connection to get your data to update.

Nearest we may get is custom folders
(pre release screenshots of the TiVo Premiere showed custom folders like "Dad's shows")

i.e. "add this show to a folder"
"select folder / make new"
which will achieve much the same thing.

Batch playing is listed here:

Tivo announced an Android app a while ago, the same time as they announced the iPhone App (iPad app had already been released). So far though only the iPhone app has materialised. Then I expect there will be a further delay to port it over for use with VM Tivos.

I was talking about in the US. I know the one they release over here will be a universal app. To begin with in the US it was iPad only before they made it a universal application.

I was just stating that at the same time they said they were making it a universal app in the US, they also announced an Android app but this is yet to materialise in the US.

In setting but I would give them a try first, the trick is to start rating programs and in no time it will be recording stuff you'll like. I love it, if I'm stuck on something to watch there is always something in the suggestions folder. ;)

It returns you to live TV, but I think if you leave the on demand program playing, use the guide to set the recording, you can then press guide to return to the still playing program. I've tested this with a couple of different programs and get different results???

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I've had my Tivo box for a week now and it's difficult to disagree with Sky's summary of it being a tech gizmo. It does some things brilliantly and it's nicely customisable, but it really isn't particularly user friendly or intuative.

Things aren't helped by the poor layout of the remote, but stupid things like having to press a button twice to get to the option you want when once would have done is just badly thought out.

Also having problems with series link, which I never did with the V+ box. For instance, I've set it to record New Episodes Only of Jo Whiley's Music Show and yet I checked my folders this morning and there are 4 identical episodes sat there. All of which I have to laboriously delete via several menus, because as far as I'm aware there's no single button press available to do this. :erm:
Only one of the episodes has the "New" logo next to it, so I have no idea why it would make such a basic error.

Hopefully I'll start to get used to all its foibles soon, but I'm not very impressed so far. It kind of reminds me of people who root their mobile phones and sing the praises of Android for being so adaptable, but ultimately that's not a mass market attitude - I just want it to work.

The Clear button at the bottom left of the remote does exactly this ;)

When you have the list of recorded programmes, press the "clear" button (bottom left button).

Also, did you choose the "New only" option when setting up the Series Link?

Ah, marvelous. Ta for that. :D I had noticed the "clear" button seemed to be quite multi-functional depending on what menu you were in - which kind of makes it even more baffling that they would tuck it away in the bottom corner. But still, that's handy to know.

And yep, Hugh, I've set all my series links to New Episodes Only, Keep All Shows, Keep Until I Delete, Start 1 Minute Early and 4 minutes overrun. The buffering has worked fine, with no failed recordings or missed endings so far.
But the Tivo box does behave like a needy anti-virus programme sometimes, asking you if you want to trim the buffer of one programme to allow it to record another programme which airs at a similar time. That should be default surely.

You need to be fast forwarding on the button to the right of the yellow pause button and then pressing the skip button will skip to the next segment.

It will have to be a lot sooner then that only a idiot change manager would allow a mass deployment like that weeks before Christmas. Plus they will want to do that a handful of regions at a time so they don't overwhelm the call centre with support calls.

I would imagine it will start in a few weeks, I don't think any show stopping bugs have been reported on the Community forum.

That wasn't an update. Someone pressed the wrong button and the boxes were told an update was available when there wasn't. Procedures were put in place to prevent it happening again, and since then the headend systems have been replaced and now work differently anyway.

When i say a few weeks I mean two weeks, otherwise they are just going to cut it far too close to Christmas and most big companies have change freezes that start around mid December.

So hopefully that means it will be November as otherwise they would have put coming months but you never know with VM.

Reading the article in the link it says in the small print that Spotify will be available to existing XL, XXL and 100MB customers on signing up to a new 12 month contract.

How does that work for those of us who have recently entered a new 12 month contract when taking on Tivo? I presume that the new Spotify contract will just replace the Tivo one, is that correct?

Just to clarify,

XL, XXL and 100Mb customers relates to a Broadband contract.

So why should a TiVo contract relate to Spotify? Or have I missed something?

Because Spotify is coming to TiVo, but you'll need a Spotify Premium account to use it - and a Spotify Premium account is available for six months free by recontracting or upgrading to 30, 50 or 100Mbit broadband

If you want to go for the six month offer, you need to be on an Open/free account

If you don't want the six month offer, then you can get a Premium account whenever you like

Actually it doesn't matter, VM gave me 12 months free, you get it as a code that you add to your account. If you already have a premium account it just extends the date your paid up to.

That was a different offer.

The one announced today has a different process

How do I link an existing Spotify account to my Virgin Media or Mobile account?

Quote:

If you’ve taken a Broadband offer and are a paying Spotify customer; Unlimited or Premium, you can still link your accounts. First you’ll need to downgrade your Spotify account to their free service, then come back and register through My Virgin Media. Don’t worry, as you go through the registration process we’ll guide you through what to do.

How does that work for those of us who have recently entered a new 12 month contract when taking on Tivo? I presume that the new Spotify contract will just replace the Tivo one, is that correct?

I entered into a new contract 2 weeks ago when I had Tivo installed

What's the Ethernet port for on the TiVo box I just connect one of my homeplugs to it?

Do I need to do anything else to set it up?

At the moment it's for nothing. When Virgin launch the iPad app you'll need to use it to connect the TiVo box to your router

Is it for the rumoured shared recordings between multiroom boxes?

It'll be for that as well when it's launched but the only thing officially announced is the iPad app

I hope they keep these updates coming over the months and years. Keep adding to TiVo.

As I've already said my parents have a TIVO install booked at the end of this month , they are not the most tech savvy people in the world and I've only had a brief play around with TIVO at a friends. Just a couple of questions so I can help them.

1. I understand the principal and have used the thumbs up thumbs down function but with suggestions will it automatically record things or is there an option to just list them to allow you to pick and choose.

2. Is there any particular methods for more reliable Wishlists ie Surname first etc.

3. What apps are currently available ? How do you use the photo app to stream your pictures ?

4. What's the crack with new only , all etc and something about 28 day rule ?

Sorry if these questions sound lame just trying to gain some knowledge to help the elderly when installed LOL.

Phoned last saturday to Upgrade to 1TB Tivo and they will also move my existing Cisco V HD box to another room. Will only be paying £3.00 per month No £6.50 charge :). Installation date was the 8th of December. Got it rescheduled on tuesday. Installation date is now the 16th of November. One day before the update starts to roll out.

1. yes, you can do either, but the default is set to record your suggestions, and since these will automatically be deleted to make room for programmes you schedule to record, and will automatically not record in the event of a tuner clash, I'd be inclined to leave them. After a week or so you can start to think of the suggestions folder as another on demand channel - ie. somewhere to go when you've got nothing else to watch.

2. When you do a wishlist search its split in to different categories - Actors name, Directors name, category etc. My PILKINGTON, KARL - HD worked a treat, picking up Idiot Abroad when the new series started, but also the Ricky Gervais show, which was an added bonus. My FILMS, CRIME AND DRAMA picked up a load of rubbish and was quickly deleted, however. Make of the what you will, but I get the impression that the more specific you are the better.

3. If you have a Facebook, Flickr of Picassa account you can view the photos through the photo gallery app. Do your parents have any of these accounts? If so then its as simple as uploading photos to one of these and then logging into it through TiVo, which if they have an account they'll know how to do. I have Picassa and it works fine. There are several other apps but I only really look at IPlayer. Some of the others are aimed at selling you Sky Sports and Movies, and I don't have much time for YouTube. There is a scrolling business news channel availble through apps which, if thats your bag, is supposed to be pretty decent.

4. Right - my biggest problem with TiVo - Virgin have been so poor at explaining it that I've had to go elsewhere for my instructions. This is, as far as I can tell, basically a "TiVo Premiere with HD menus" - TiVo as its own website with product support including manuals to download, so its worth a look. However, if you set recordings to new it will only record shows which are new to the UK, according to the EPG data. New and reruns will pick up new shows, but also look for repeats of a new show in the event that it missed its chance to record it when new because of a tuner clash or the network was down etc. Everything is new, reruns if its missed a new show, and repeats of old series of the same show - ie. literally everything.

New and reruns is a pretty good default, although we started watching one programme at the beginning of the second series, so set an "everything" wish list and let it find all of the first series for us as well. Which it did. On another channel.

The 28 day rule means that it "shouldn't" record something thats already been on your planner within the last 28 days, so if you have something set up to record everything, it picks up series 2 episode 3, you watch it, and then within the month that programme is repeated, it won't record it and fill your planner with stuff it knows you've already watched.

Phew!

Enjoy!!!

I got a date around 3 weeks after ordering (install date tomorrow).

I did mine on the website, and have received no offer of relocation for my current V+ box (not too fussed about that though).

Ditto my parents date is around 3 weeks from ordering , the woman told them some areas can't be guaranteed until mid December.

We are able to push an app launch after the firmware update later this month, and before the change freeze. As we've said in our update announcement, the firmware update supports us to launch Red Button services as well as Spotify services. So we're working as hard as we can with our partners to get these great services out as soon as possible. Everything else will come in the new year.

BBC red button app and Sky Sports red button app might still launch at the end of this month along with the Spotify App after the update.
What "everything else" means i don't know. Everything else could mean multiroom streaming which it don't think is activated yet. Any other guesses ?

For what feels like the billionth time, the next TiVo update will have the ability to run red button stuff. However there is no actual date set for when any red button apps may appear. However when they do it will just be a small download for the app and will not need any kind of system or software update as that is part of the actual software download happening soon.
