Should be an interesting first day in office, apparently.

After U-turning on both Ukraine and making food prices cheaper, who knows what Trump has in store for his second team.

“Within hours of taking office I will sign dozens of executive orders, close to a hundred to be exact, many of which I will be describing in my address tomorrow,” Trump said at a dinner for people who had donated to the inauguration festivities.

He’s planning to sign an executive order banning gender-woo-woo from all government business. In fact the text leaked to select US journalists actually uses the definition ‘woman: adult human female’ exactly as has been circulated by a British feminist campaigner, Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, since 2018.

(You may have seen a billboard, tee shirt or sticker randomly about the place - here’s one I spotted on holiday in Penzance last summer).

Gender identity ideology - the (nonsensical) claim that one may ‘identify’ as anything other than the male or female they were born as, ostensibly due to the existence of a gender identity (sometimes called a ‘gendered soul’) that may or may not match the biological sex of one’s body.

You might very charitably call it a social science. It is more accurately a neo-religious philosophy. And it is presently infecting great swathes of public life in the western world, with such real-world consequences as women losing places in sports teams to men (who not only claim to be women, and think of themselves as women, but then actually expect everyone else to carry on as if they really are women), women prisoners at risk of harm from men being housed with them, women being told they aren’t allowed to require a woman in intimate or stressful situations such as hospital treatments or rape crisis counselling.

But I’m sure you knew all this already. Feel free to performatively clutch your pearls at this point. ;)

Straight to the ad hominem attack. I was going to agree with you about the conflation of "female" individuals that, as most people would agree, need to segregated from females in hospitals, prisons, etc. but then point out there is room to cater for those people that can clearly present as adult women after gender reassignment therapy/surgery. I think this nuance is one that will be lost going forward with the shouting match between the two extreme sides of this debate.

I think the Trump presidency will increase hostility to the idea of Trans individuals given his sponsorship by the Evangelical Right. Remains to be seen if this change will be mirrored here in the UK

My apologies for getting over excited :Peaceman: The truth is, I’m pretty down at the thought of what Trump is likely to do over the next 4 years so I’m euphoric at getting a win on day one. Major social shifts like this do tend to cross the Atlantic and should have an effect on the policy discourse here.

Yes, I agree, finding ways to deal compassionately with those who have undergone surgical intervention is going to be difficult going forward. We can at least give thanks to Hilary Cass for putting the brakes on activist attempts to exascerbate that problem. Nobody should be in any doubt that the medicalisation of psychological distress in children and teenagers has been a key plank of trans activism. Creating a class of young adults who have undergone such intervention is a useful Trojan horse.

I'm avoiding all news and news channels for few days.

I don't want to swear at my TV and raise my BP any higher than it is.

Sensible advice. No one forces people to watch the news at ten or to listen to politicians of all persuasions who wind them up.
