Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

I don't suppose NTL have a rollout plan for the speed increases that they would care to share with us.

I have the 750K service and a Pace STB.Their home page says that upgrades will be automatic i.e. no need to take any action but it would be nice to know what timescale we are talking about.

Anybody on the Cableforum team know when they will be upgrading Manchester please?

You'll need a samsung stb or a SACM to get the full 2meg service. I don't know if ntl will automatically swap it for you, (someone might be able to tell you), so you might need to ring cs and ask them to swap it over.

You have to ring up cs and tell them you need to upgrade to 2mb and you need your box changing for samsung box,and they will arrange your box to be changed,

Yes, I believe the Pace STB will only handle upto 1Mb, so a change of box is on the cards. I vaguely recall that NTL did intend to charge £25 for the upgrade then I heard it was free. Looks like it's free if you have the Samsung already. I will have to contact Customer Services, but it sounds like things are happening if Oldham are already geared up.

Does the Samsung STB give any other advantages apart from broadband speed increases?

I think the swap is free now.

From my experience, the samsung is more reliable, but other than the speed issue, there are no added extras.

Thanks for that, Mal. Much appreciated. Guess it's time to give NTL a call.

Just called NTL about the upgrade, did it while I was on the phone. Took no more than a couple of minutes. No waiting in a queue either.

All up and running at 2mbps.

So the download speed is always 10.24x the upload speed.

128k multiples are irrelevant for bandwidth control purposes, which are measured purely in bitrates, not bytes or any other power of 2. The UBR and CM file will accept any valid number.

Just being dumb here - but where are the new upload speeds listed ?

I thought that they had stayed at 128/256/256 :Yikes:

Check here: http://www.home.ntl.com/page/broadbandfaqs

And just to repeat the original speeds for the equivalent price level were:

64/128/256 (on the old 300/750/1.5M download services)

1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec:)
2nd 128K took 530 ms = 247306 Bytes/sec = approx 2058 kbits/sec:tu:
3rd 128K took 541 ms = 242277 Bytes/sec = approx 2016 kbits/sec:D
4th 128K took 521 ms = 251578 Bytes/sec = approx 2093 kbits/sec

These results appear to be rather fast: maybe this page was in the browser cache.

All together, "Oh no it wasn't" :)

'methinks Robin's page needs updating.

Yes, I've upgraded too but because I have a Pace STB I have had to book an appointment so they are coming on May 5th. Still, it was quick and simple to organise. It was free and the new Samsung box will no doubt be more reliable and suited to future developments.
