So is that the new rules-based order, ignore the UN and just do what you want? History tells us that has not worked out well in the past

If the UN told us to give the Falklands to Argentina we wouldn't do it.

Besides giving 'back' the Chagos Islands is one thing. Spending billions is nuts when we're not being compelled to do so. If keeping the American base is so important to us that we're willing to fork over £9-18bn then why abide by a decision that isn't apparently binding?

The UN is ignored all the time. Such is politics.

Would be interesting to know what our obligation to the US is. If we decide to cede the colony, surely our obligation to housing a US base there ends and it's up to the US to negotiate with the new owners of the island? And pay for it too.

Am I the only one who's never previously heard of these Islands?

Re: Starmer’s chronicles

I had heard of them because the base being there was been an issue for a while, but it's obviously become a much bigger deal since.

We couldn't give them back to Argentina as Argentina did not own them in the first place. ;)

Can any one really own a island? Invade, overrun perhaps. To be fair what the heck Is the real difference between them being British and the USA taking Greenland perhaps Russia should claim the isle of Wight

Re: Starmer’s chronicles

The Chagos have never really belonged to Mauritius. The only connection is that they were both once "owned" by France.
Seychelles, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and India are all nearer than Mauritius.

He didn’t say give them “back”, he just said “give them”.
