If advertising alone could cover the cost of Premier League matches then ITV would be bidding for them! With a cost per match of £6.53m for the current 2013-2016 rights, ITV could not make the figures work for them in 2012. I can't see that this will change now especially as the cost per match will certainly rise. Sorry to be a damp squib, I don't see advertising as an option to cover Eurosport's costs if it won a package(s) of matches.

For online subscriptions, it's £4pm* for a 12-month contract and £6pm* for a adhoc access (*less 1p).

What are you gibbering on about? how does the first line you quoted mean I agree with you about advertizing costs? Why did you snipe that line from a previous post when you have chosen to ignore my point about increased ad revenues during the PL games only?

Perhaps I am going about this the wrong way. If Eurosport itself (not Eurosport UK) funded by Discovery won PL rights, surely it would allow them to show the matches throughout the 50+ countries they operate in? If it does, charging advertizers extra in each of those countries for PL games and PL games only, will soon cover the cost of each game. If they do get the rights to games, and can only show them in the UK, then no, I agree ad revenues alone wont cover it.

If I am wrong about the rights issue throughout Europe, I will happily eat humble pie. Until then, I stand by the idea that a European wide broadcaster showing PL games in 50+ countries can easily make their money back through increased advertizing revenue.

I agree that advertising rates rise for Premier League matches but according to ITV, not by enough to cover the cost of acquiring the rights to them. I've just been trying to understand the case that you've been making. Now that you mean multi-country rights, I understand what you're getting at though at present, the Premiership is sold on a per-country basis.

I'm not too bothered who wins however my preference would probably be Sky because in my opinion they have the best set of all round sports rights and their coverage is second to none.

I have to admit to be being a little worried about a third and possibly fourth bidder being involved , those wanting to watch all games would face a massive hike should three broadcasters pick up rights.

Complete fantasyland but I suppose a dream scenario would be if someone like Bein Sport picked up the lions share this way it would be in there interest to offer every platform equal access on similar charges , not going to happen but we can wish.

Yup, and I so look forward to all the moaning that will inevitably follow when the new deals are announced, it will be a new experience on here.;).

I know everyone is entitled to a good moan on here, and I agree it is wrong that it happens the way it does. I also know people choose to spend their hard earned money on paying for the sports channels. I have no problem with any of those things. However, whilst people choose to pay the prices, you simply have to deal with the fact you are going to continue to get your pants pulled down each month. Moaning about it on here (as cathartic as it may be) is not going to change anything.

Yup, and if Eurosport pick up the rights to the countries they operate in, more "free" PL football in this country may happen.

As I said in a previous post though, it is a very unlikely scenario.

If only , at least we'd get equal access across all platforms. In reality I can't see it happening there schedule would be non existent and all the key rights are tied up for many years.

A platform neutral broadcaster like beIN would be interesting, though I think if beIN wanted to enter another European sports market alongside France, Spain, Italy or Germany would be far better value than the UK. If their business model was unviable, could BT and Sky complain to the regulators about unfair state subsidy? Or would they prefer to co-operate with beIN instead?
Whilst there will always be some small overseas sports rights available, the key rights that draw subscribers have all been sewn up.

http://advanced-television.com/2015/...eague-auction/

Main points

According to media analysis firm Ampere Research, with the outcome of the Premier League rights auction unknown, there’s no doubt that Sky is facing the greatest competitive challenge in the tournament’s 23-year history. “Based on analysis of past inflation rates, a three-season deal could hit the £5 billion mark for the first time as BT goes in hard against its main rival.

If Sky and BT buy the same packages, and bear the same level of costs relative to one another as they do with the current contract, Sky would need to spend £1.24 billion a year, £3.7 billion for a total three-season contract. BT would need to spend £402m a year, £1.2 billion for the total three-season contract. Based on its calculations, Ampere believes Sky will want to spend around or slightly below £3 billion for its share, leading to a disconnect in price to value. BT will be need to be looking around the £1 billion mark, assuming the pair retain the same packages they have now.

Ampere’s analysis suggests that Sky can spend £3 billion on the Premier League three-season deal without increasing the spend per TV customer over current levels, but, based on its inflation predictions, it may well need to dig deeper. While these numbers look high, the pot of £3 billion created by future customer growth leaves it just 24 per cent short of the implied inflationary cost. Adding in inflation over the three years means the stretch cost of £3.7 billion does not look completely unrealistic, suggests Ampere.

Ampere believes that entry of a new party to the bidding process could reduce these costs by around 10 per cent for each party, based on the assumption that a new entrant would risk only one of the seven packages available. How a three-way split would work for football fans is unclear.

Well, it looks like BeIN is a likely contender - how much they will go for is the big question!

Four broadcasters are expected to be in the frame when bidding for the Premier League rights for 2016/19 closes Friday.

The existing rights holders Sky and BT will be joined by Eurosport owners Discovery Communications and the Qatar-based beIN Sport.

The Daily Telegraph has an interesting report. How solid its information is at this stage, we don't know but:
  • It says says no packages were won on Friday!
  • BT is unlikely to be satisfied unless it increases its current games by at least 18.
  • BT and Sky were probably not the only bidders.
  • The Sunday 4pm slot is the key one.
  • Citing unnamed analysts, it says Sky losing the 4pm Sunday package could cost it a fifth of its profits and a third of its sports subscribers.

I'm hearing sky and bt have kept the same but switched as BT have got the 4pm Sunday and sky the early Saturday. And a third party has got some rights

So basically BT will bump the prices up saying "but we have the Sunday game now you have to pay more for the Sunday game!!" And sky will say "price decrease? Definitely not we have the same amount of games" and this third organisation believed to be BEin will arrive and say "pay us a tenner if you want to see every game"

They'll all laugh heartily as scudamore the premier league chief removes his top and strips for money with all the morals of an alley cat

The £4billion Premier League TV rights tender goes into a second round on Tuesday morning with revised bids due by midday. The seven packages are expected to be awarded later in the day.

Although the Discovery Channel and beIN Sport have shown interest, the most likely scenario is that Sky will retain four prime packages.

BT, meanwhile, will get an increased number of games, up to 56 out of the 168 live matches being sold per season for three years.

This is the latest information I have on this. Still speculation only on who is likely to come out on top.

I think beIN Sport will get a share of the games this time around.

Richard scudamore on sky sports currently is one of the nastiest most repulsive people in the world. Have a good look at him. He writes to clubs who charge cheap prices encouraging them to increase as it makes other clubs look bad

He's the man who will one day cause football in this country to implode

So has nothing changed??

BT paid £960m for their 2 packages

Sky paid £4.18bn for their 5

Over the last rights deal BT are paying +30% sky paying +83% more!

Wonder if they'll suck it up or raise the prices a fair bit?

Super Sunday
Or Super Mega Triple Double Extra Bacon Awesome Sunday, as Sky once considered branding it for Aston Villa thrillers. The big news is that Sky have kept the two Sunday afternoon games, including Super Sunday.
Bear in mind throughout all this that the TV companies, of course, get to choose which matches they show, but obviously everyone wants Man United v Liverpool, Arsenal v Chelsea and QPR versus the creeping sense of hopelessness. Thus, all of the agreed packages have included SOME but not ALL first picks.
Sky Sports will have the game at 4pm or so – this package has a lip-smacking 18 first-choice matches, so expect the biggest games to continue in this slot.
They will also show the earlier game at lunchtime. Nothing doing for BT on Sundays.
Friday
Sky have paid 5.136 billion for all their packages and will now show live top-flight football on Friday nights. There will be at least 18 games on a Friday night. This package was bundled with Monday nights…

Sky break bank in £5.136bn Premier League deal 10 Feb 2015
Live football on TV: Your guide to all the action 10 Feb 2015
Premier League TV rights announcement: live 10 Feb 2015
Monday Night Football
...which will still be shown on Sky Sports 1. The programme that introduced the Hairy Handed Richard Keys to the nation and is now so expertly pundited by Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp stays on Sky Sports 1.
Saturday
Whether we like it or not, the idea of football on Saturday’s is still mired in the 1980s, because people in the olden days believed that football on a Saturday afternoon would stop people going to the game. So they went to a pub with moody Norwegian satellite TV. Catch up, granddad!
Sky Sports and BT Sports have done a Saturday Switcheroo. Sky Sports show the game that kicks off the weekend by kicking off at 12.30.
And then once everyone has come back from the ground/from the shops/from the hypnotic trance of watching Souey too early in the morning, then it’s over to BT Sport for the 5.30pm kick off.
The much less good days of the week, aka weekdays
There was a small package (stop it) of six weekday matches and then eight Saturday matches, but there were only two ‘first picks’ up for scrumps in this section.
Bank Holidays
Last and sorta kinda least, the package for eight Bank Holiday matches and six Saturday matches has gone to BT.
So what does it all mean? Well, it means that Sky have won packages A, C, D, E and G below and they paid an astonishing 5.136 billion to do so. Talk of a new player in town by, and about, BT may have been exaggerated...
The thoughts of Eurosport or whoever muscling in has been curtailed for now. That's what paying ten million per match gets you.

thenry 10-02-2015 17:27

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Price rises on Sky are expected but as much as it would have been had Sky won CL rights as well is unlikely.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Lets put it this way, l think its bad for Tv fans. BT for me is a no simply reason is BT is a totally rubbish, and the horrible log at the bottom ruins the game for me

Clubs should reduce prices to get more fans inside the ground - total rip,

VM will almost certainly put prices up, as Sky will charge more - at the end of the day Fans will suffer

Doubtless there will be those who feel they have to get two subscriptions to follow their teams in the Premier League But with 126 matches, this continues to be the highest number of matches ever available under one Sky Sports subscription.

And BT will be scratching their heads as to why everyone's starting to cancel. Why would anyone willingly pay for Michael Owen. What did he pay to get that gig?

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

It's absolutely disgusting that these two companies, especially $ky, can afford to charge this extraordinary amount of money to broadcast football from the EPL, it just shows you how stupid, we, the gullible public must be.
The money that they are paying overrated footballers is ridiculous, and it's the poor old public, who want to watch the games on TV who are footing the bill for these guys to lead a life of outstanding luxury.
Shame on $ky & BT, if you increase my payments you can stick it up your arse!

The sums are huge aren't they , as already been said on here its the customer who'll foot the bill and sadly not always the sports customers I feel , I'm sure some of these increases go on things like line rental and basic TV packs but what do I know.
