But if the ethernet port was 10 half duplex previously (I don't know if it was) it wouldn't allow 10Mbs at full speed, then there is the next speed upgrade to consider, but we'll leave that for another day. :D

Most modems are set to 100meg. If someone had set that 1 at 10meg then the firmware upgrade would have reset it to 100meg.

I have been assured by real people in the know that the firmware upgrade had nothing to do with the 10 meg upgrade.

Drat!!!
Well. I am running sweet as a nut at the moment anyway, I am sure the modem is wanting to go into the fast lane, it feels like it is straining at the leash.

Where did this rumour about NTL doing slower speeds with unlimited cap come from?

Just done a comment about this in the cap section also,
"Brand-new Internet service provider Be Unlimited is on the verge of launching a 24Mbit/s broadband service - the fastest in the UK and triple the speed of the current leading competitor. Based on ADSL2+ technology (doubles the download bandwidth) and thanks to LLU (Local Loop Unbundling), Be Unlimited's new service should help to give the UK's broadband market a much-needed shake-up. The rollout will start in London, quickly expanding to the rest of the UK, according to the company."

http://www.bethere.co.uk/

sent of my current details and got this reply -
"Your name to our list, ensures you are one step closer to having Be installed. We'll keep your email on record and check our coverage growth regularly to see if you qualify for setup in your area."

hopefully wont be long till these super services spread and ntl/bt and the other isps here with their tight **** 1mb-2mb capped services will be made to look like jokes which most savvy net users knew for years,1-3mb capped lnext to 24mbs would be like driving a push bike next to a sports car.

...I can't get my head around this:dunce: Wouldn't it be better for ntl to scrap an unlimited service and just have a selection of tiered 10Mb packages. Surely it's better to have a 10Mb @ 600Gb per month package as their top user allowance service - i.e. max six days use - than a 2Mb unlimited service which would be continuously used 24/7 to achieve the same 600Gb amount? The chances of 10 users "overlapping" their allowance downloads on a 600Gb capped 10Mb service would be quite slim - whilst on the 2Mb service, users are much more likely to overlap and thus eat into more bandwidth.

Just my 2 penneth worth!

10 2Mbit users downloading at the same time won't saturate a local area, 4 10Mbit users will.

I can see your point, but personally I'm hoping that they do offer an unlimited package at a speed lower than 10 Mbit... although slightly higher speed than the current 3 Mbit would be nice. In all honesty, I'm not too interested in a 10 Mbit connection that's capped - I'm likely to regularly exceed the cap over a month but would not find too many cases where the speed of a 10 Mbit connection would be that necessary. I download a lot of TV shows that I miss, for example, and would be more than happy to download those at 4 or 5 Mbit - it's still fast enough to download quicker than you watch them ;)

If this type of package is cheaper than the current £37 p/month that I'm currently paying for my 3 Mbit connection, then I'll be even happier too!

I hear the BBC will start to offer tv shows to be downloaded from their website, i wonder if this will come into play when companies decide how big to make their caps.

Would the Samsung STB's (of which I'm still waiting for one!) need to be changed to handle 10MB/s? Like when they had to change the PACE STB's for Samsungs in the 1MB to 2MB increase?

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

nope apparently the samsung box should be able to handle 10mb with ease.
