Think we could use better cover at RB and CB too. However Sir Chezney has proved his doubters wrong this season IMO!

Flamini RB. Tommy a risk at CB but its one of those that you could get away with. Szczesny still throws in spanners and thats a worry, he then stutters and it goes down hill. Hopefully hes learning, becoming stronger and all.

I had to check (as not seen him play ,much), but it says
Jovetic: His primary position is a second striker, although he can also operate as an attacking midfielder or a winger

Some pundit said he was amazing in the old Gerrard role but then it could've been the same Guy that said demichelis was better in midfield!

That would have been red in most cases. It was a clear, simple, red card. He was the last man, Chelsea were about to break, he pulled him down using his shirt.

I meant the point about "if it was an arsenal player, then it would have been a red" (not exact quote, but too tired to look for exact words). That presumes the ref would book if an arsenal player, and ignore a player of any other team. Hence me saying, "arsenal bias" :D

Firing managers. Always the same solution.

I say it again. Look at Pardew at Newcastle (although that is again a bit iffy at the moment but not really his fault), Wenger at Arsenal, Rodgers at Liverpool, maybe Allardyce at West Ham now as well. You need to judge managers after a season that includes good and bad spells, hell I think you need more than a season but that might be too much to ask. Teams lose and they win, and they tend to do so in clusters as confidence and form ebb and flow. You can have bad seasons and good ones. Arsenal had some terrible ones but the players that Wenger persisted with have come good. Rodgers was in trouble last year but now Liverpool are after that 4th place and doing quite well at it.

You can't keep changing every time you hit that bad spell. You might get a boost but what do you do when the next bad spell comes? Fire the manager again? It's short-termism, it's expensive, and it doesn't allow the team to form and adjust to a certain style and confidence. It stops players developing as well as they as they get moved around, dropped and played at the whims of a succession of managers none of whom take the time to persist with promising but as yet unproven talent.

It's bloody stupid.

Exactly, which is why I think Moyes should be given at least 2 seasons before fans start demanding he be sacked. Fergie was given nearly 4 years to build his team up, so Moyes needs to be given a chance to mould his own team.

Yup but a lot of fans don't want to even give him the season. 20 years of success has left some of them, not all, spoilt IMO with unrealistic expectations of what supporting a football team is like. 6 months is no where near long enough for the job Moyes has been given.

Besides it's really funny for the rest of us. :D

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

To an extent though I can see the view of those fans. When United have been as dominant as they were, it is hard to see them struggle. I dare say that if Arsenal fail to win a trophy this year even the die hard fans will start calling for Wenger to go. Patience can only go so far, but patience is needed. A tricky one.

There have been rumours around here of this happening for ages. There's no denying the quality of the Swans' performance and results have not matched up to last season.

Problem is Michu - I can't see him sticking around now ML has gone and I'm pretty sure Chico will leave too.

l think they have been hamstrung this season in some respects as Michu being out and them being in the Europa league has not helped at all.

Scenario. Arsenal change their manager.

Rule comes out, no changes to managers for two years.

The manager chosen is a plonker.

Would Arsenal fans be happy with the rule, as it changed at wrong time for them?

Though on bright side, it would be funny :D

If I owned a club, I think i would want to choose when to sack a manager. I suspect that is the same for every club.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

Our owner is obviously trigger happy, like Bates before him, so you could say a rich one like Roman possibly isn't the best to have. Bates wasn't minted, so he just built the debt up whilst also sacking people when he started chasing the premier league cash. But then you have a club like Spurs who get praised for the way they run the club, but they've gone through roughly the same number of managers as us since the premier league began.

Has it been the same since the summer when Laudrup was being chased ?

Russ 04-02-2014 21:40

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

We've always known that Swansea was a stepping stone for Laudrup, for him to get some experience before moving on to something bigger and better so it was a case of 'when' not 'if' he moved on. I'm surprised it happened so soon but given the poor run of results I guess it was inevitable. The thing with ML was although a decent manager he was more of a 'name' than anything else. Gary Monk is taking over for now and a lot of Swans fans are saying they'd be happy if he stayed on as he's been with the club for years, he knows it from the foundations up and is popular with the fans. The only thing he lacks is any real managerial experience, essential for any PL club.

So that means Arsenal will end up with 1! PSG have a decent relationship with Wenger, theres no point spoiling that but at the same time theres no point in wasting a possible opportunity to sign Cavani. I'm not too sure what other positions need filling yet having not seen the outcome of some of the contract extensions. Arsenal may need a CB if Verm leaves. Draxler is a player the club are watching carefully. Bottom line is Arsenal will have money to spend, I calculate a safe spend of minimum 100m.

If the FA had any brains they would have rescinded the red card and the 3 match ban from the very start.

Exactly den. For one, it was not intentional to catch Flores at all in the face. Two, he caught him in the forehead and he went down clutching his nose and mouth. I am amazed the FA didn't rescind it on appeal first time around. Hopefully the tribunal see sense.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

He swung his arm back with intention to hit him, even if he didn't catch him fully and Flores over reacted. A red may have been harsh, but it was not obviously wrong. West Ham just need to get on with it and stop moaning.

There was absolutely no intent to hit him at all and the player went down like he had just been shot when we all know he went down with the sole intention of getting him sent off and that in my mind is cheating and thus he should be the one being punished in my humble opinion.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

Well its a matter of opinion whether there was intent or not, in my opinion there was, you can see it in his face and the way he swung his arm round. The ref agrees, the FA agrees. The reaction of Flores has nothing to do with it. As i said, a red was probably a bit harsh but its not obviously wrong, you can see why it was given, therefore it can't/shouldn't be overturned.

I thought that carroll did not need to swing the arm.

Petulance more than anything else.

Rubbish as It was six of one and half a dozen of the other but sadly Flores chose to over react massively in order for the referee to react and send Carroll off and that in my mind and many others is cheating to gain a advantage by foul means.

I am not arguing the point about the reaction, though noting, it was a reaction.

But carroll did not need to swing his arm. It wasn't for balance (he was already down).

Forgetting the reaction (as that is after the fact), Carroll had no reason to swing his arm, except to do something. Whether he catches the guy should be irrelevant.

A man's game? Carroll tries to take a swipe, and that is a man's game?

Shall we go back to the 70's? Leave the boot in, break a leg? Is that what you are advocating?

You seem to be confusing the reaction with the intent.

The reaction was wrong, but if the intent to hit someone wasn't there, this wouldn't have happened.

l am not confusing anything as he was shrugging the guy off in my opinion and he slightly messed his hair up and in my humble opinion I don’t think you should get sent off for messing somebody’s hair up.

Football on the main in the 70's was far fairer and yes there were one or two tackles but nothing more then now.

Tosh (with a capital "T" no less).
Shrugging him off? Or taking a swipe at him.

And you seem to be confusing history. Football in the 70s wasn't anything like today, and thank goodness. Tackles then were atrocious.

If you tried to play football, they would just try and cripple you. I suspect your memory is going Den, though to be fair, 70s was about 40 years ago. :)

If football was played in that style now, it wouldn't be worth watching.

Next you will be telling me you miss all the other attitudes at the time, that were deemed "acceptable". UK gold has some repeats, if you are nostalgic for the old days.

Oh dear my dear chap you seem to have forgotten about the entertainers and characters of the 70's and the fact supporters could go and see British players before they became as rare as the dodo.

Yes l am quite worried about my memory going but l still think there is life in the old dog yet before he goes out to grass.:)

The reaction of Flores has everything to do with it, if he hadn't gone down like he had a broken nose when in all actuality he'd had his hair ruffled he'd have got yellow not red, plenty of ex refs interviewed have said the same.

If this is overturned it could have massive implications for the appeal system, could even be scrapped all together and as it stands that won't be a bad thing.

If they allowed video evidence, that allowed all incidents to be punished, regardless of whether the ref saw it, that would be fine by me.

Equally, if the ref got the benefit of a video referee, I wouldn't have issue.

But once the decision is taken, unless it is shockingly wrong (and carroll seemed to be swinging his arm for a reason), then no matter what happens to the player, he should be punished.

I would love the idiots who play at "sticking the head" banned. Stupid people need banned, which they are.
