Both Sky and BT paid the Premier League just shy of £4.5 billion for the new 3 year deal.

Breaking that down it's around £1.5 billion a year or £125 million a month.

At a £125 million a month a Premier League streaming subscription package priced at £20 a month would require more than 6 million people taking it and that's just to recoup what Sky and BT currently pay for the rights.

As Raider999 has also correctly said the Premier League would also then have massive costs such as pundits , dealing with subscriptions , distribution costs , bandwith , marketing the list goes on.

I believe that Sky and BT have about that number of viewers for the PL channels now, but as you say, those subscribers do not necessarily want the footie.

However, as explained a while ago, there are plenty of marketing angles available that neither Sky nor BT have exploited yet, which would increase the amount of revenue it is possible to collect.

And how many more subscribers would they need on top of that figure to clear all the running costs I mentioned.

I don't have that information, but as I said, there are other marketing opportunities (as I have outlined before) and there is quite a big untapped audience that could be exploited. Actually, lower prices would attract many more punters, so plenty of avenues exist for increasing customers, and thus revenue.

OB doesn't like to accept things but until such a time that the Premier league sees it's UK rights drop significantly his idea of the Premier League having a streaming service in the UK remains a pipe dream.

It seems to me that the ability to stream effectively is dependent on having a good broadband connection as well as the quality of the stream itself. Until the whole of the UK has access to superfast broadband, there will always be a significant level of dissatisfaction at the quality of streaming (or its total non availability).

That doesn't mean that the problems we have today are necessarily the same problems as we will get in a few years' time. If the PL is actively considering this as an option, then perhaps this idea is not as problematical as you think it is. Today's problems are often tomorrow's jokes.

As you failed to answer the question, I presume that is a NO

Well, I did say that today's problems are not necessarily tomorrow's problems.

I don't watch sport at all. But I do understand the issues of blocking, stuttering, latency, etc. As I said, it's a problem now, but it's not permanent. You need to look beyond today.

And what makes you think those problems will go away OB?.

What makes you think they won't? These are relatively new services, and of course the problems are being addressed. In a few years' time, streaming will work as well as broadcast linear TV.
