Obviously, not attractive enough for the amount PL wanted. I understand there were bids for each of these two packages but the greedy PL wanted more.

I think in the future PL will set up their own channel (or streaming) and try to sell direct to the public.

Will this work for them - it remains to be seen.

That might be a bit risky for the PL, considering how much Sky and BT currently pay for the rights. I hope they have the expertise to make that work!

OB - isn't streaming the future🤔

If they really believe in their product it must be the way to go.

Of course they may not be that confident of attracting enough subscribers to replace the billions they get from Sky, BT et al

Streaming is most definitely the future, Raider, but that wasn't my point.

The issue is whether they can make at least the same amount of money as BT and Sky make for the PL and whether they have the expertise to pull it off. Your last paragraph summarises that point for me!

They would have to be making considerably more than they currently do from BT and Sky for it to be cost effective.

Then there was the press conference to announce Tyson Fury has signed with Frank Warren and his comeback fight will be in June. This got no coverage from BoxNation on social media whatsoever suggesting the fight won't feature on the channel. Warren confirmed the broadcaster will be confirmed next week.

Have a feeling this is building towards BT Sport Box Office replacing BT Showcase on Freeview / Youview with Tyson Fury featuring in their first PPV event.

That's the problem with streaming IMO - getting enough revenue in to recover rights costs.

Streaming may be the future - probably not for sports anytime soon - too big a gamble.

I would love to know how many UK viewers have subscribed to watch NRL via streaming - at £22pm I suspect not to many, especially when 2 or 3 of the 8 games are shown live each week on sky (no extra cost if you already have sky sports)

Why do you see streaming itself to be a gamble? If the Sky Sports channels and BT no longer showed Premiership football, wouldn't most subscribers simply move to the streaming service?

That may just indicate that a deal hasn't been reached with Virgin yet.

Early days yet. This article suggests it is going to launch on YouTube TV too

But would they? How many people get Sky/BT sports for the premier league and how many watch it because they already have sports packages.

Even if 80% subscribe to streaming how much would each person have to pay to get as much money as PL do from Sky/BT then the streaming company would have to collect that money, advertise, pay for filming of each match.

I have a feeling streaming would be a disaster.

Don't forget Sky and BT have been paying a fortune per match to show the games - they treat it as a loss leader to keep people subscribing to the Sports Packages (don't forget you also have to pay for the basic channels most don't watch.

I know I wouldn't subscribe to BT Sports for the football, I only do for the Premiership Rugby and Cricket.

Fair points, Raider. There is, of course, the additional concern that many people still don't have the necessary broadband speeds, although there's nothing to stop them from creating linear channels until such time as our digital infrastructure is fit for purpose.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Old Boy do you live in cloud cuckoo land ?

Both Sky and BT paid the Premier League just shy of £4.5 billion for the new 3 year deal.

Breaking that down it's around £1.5 billion a year or £125 million a month.

At a £125 million a month a Premier League streaming subscription package priced at £20 a month would require more than 6 million people taking it and that's just to recoup what Sky and BT currently pay for the rights.

As Raider999 has also correctly said the Premier League would also then have massive costs such as pundits , dealing with subscriptions , distribution costs , bandwith , marketing the list goes on.

BT and Vodaphone had the most complaints for mobile services in the UK in the final three months of 2017

BT had the highest proportion of pay-TV service complaints with 18 per 100,000 users

Talktalk received the most complaints for Broadband and landline with 31 per 100,000

No surprise with that IMO.
