Could be due to them being on Watchdog tomorrow, if thats going to be able problems with Tivo. They can say they rolled out an update that morning that should solve some of the issues.

on 12-10-2011 20:59

This week we have begun a limited pilot of our next TiVo software release. This new software includes many new improvements as well as key developments that will enable the launch of future products. We’ll be rolling it out to everyone well before Christmas. Here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect:

Spotify Support: We’ll support Spotify’s high quality streaming format, which will enable the Spotify Premium App on the TiVo platform.

Red Button: This update adds extra functionality necessary to support Red Button services developed by our channel partners, such as BBC, ITV, and Sky Sports

TiVo App support: We've enabled the connection of your TiVo box to iOS devices through your wireless router to use our fantastic TiVo app, which allows you to control the TiVo box, browse, search and manage recordings all from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

A new look for YouTube: We’ll support Google’s completely revamped YouTube app, which allows for a more relaxed viewing and browsing experience, and supports HD video!

Full BBC iPlayer integration: We’ve changed the way Catch-up TV through BBC iPlayer works. Every BBC iPlayer programme will now be available through Search & Browse, including much more HD content, and you’ll never use up a tuner for BBC iPlayer viewing.

Express Series Links: Create a Series Link with default settings at the click of a button.

Multi-tap text entry: Use the number keys on your remote like a mobile phone for text entry for typing into search.

Automatic Padding: We’ve had tremendous feedback from customers about clipped recordings, so we’ve installed a default level of padding for all recordings.

Improved Parental Controls: We’ve made some changes with PIN entry requirements to suit every household. In the new update, PIN challenges on pre-watershed playback of programmes in My Shows become optional. We’ve also added the ability to require PIN to access any application.

Skippable Music Playlists: Playlists on Music on Demand will be skippable by track

Live Pay-per-view Events: Live pay-per-view events become bookable with your remote control.

HD Upscaling: As promised on this forum, we’ve addressed the issue with our picture quality and this new update features better standard definition picture quality with improved upscaling.

Connection reliability: HDMI and SCART compatibility improved.

Info and Stop button functionality improved: You’ll be able to use the ‘info’ button in the TV programme guide and the mini guide, while the Stop button now works as you would expect.

Video Preview for every channel: Every channel will keep playing in the TV Guide window, including all the Sky channels.

There are plenty more updates already in the pipeline and, as ever, we will use your feedback to continue to improve our TiVo service.

We’ll be keeping you up to date on this forum.

Thanks,

Simon Hunt

Good news. The picture quality issue and lack of Red Button are the two main things that have stopped me upgrading to TiVo. Will follow the reactions of the userbase with interest and maybe get something in place by Christmas.

They haven't made it very clear what they mean with this, are they adding wireless support to the Tivo (through a dongle?) or do they just mean your iPad will connect to your wireless router to control the device, which I assume you will have to connect to the router using Ethernet.

I think its important to note that the update adds support for future red button apps, and not those apps themselves.

So, getting the update doesn't mean you'll instantly get red button. That will follow later. VM previously said (on the Help & Support Forums) that the next update will be a depencacy for future functionality and by the looks of it, red button is it.

Would point out that even in the US for the TiVo Premiere (which the VM TiVo is based on) to enable Wireless they use a powered Wireless to Ethernet adapter

Because when it's left to companies like Sky to come up with new ventures you get people complaining when they end up being only available for Sky customers. Just look at the complaints prior to now about the Sky red button apps not being available on cable. At least with the Beeb coming up with new technology their remit forces them to make it available to everyone due to their public funding.

I get that but it seems as if the BBC are world beaters (by being first and best) at services so I'd love to see what their R&D costs are for things like iPlayer and Red Button.

Something like iPlayer, which has been around for years, is only now being matched for quality by Hulu. It insane that the BBC is at the forefront of TV progression when billion dollar companies appear to do nothing.

Quote:

Hi Unknown,

Could you explain how the update announcement was vague? We went into great detail about a number of the new features and what they'd do.

We're starting a pilot this week, so a larger number of customers will get the update. After passing that test, we'll push the update on to everyone else. Again, until we're confident of the date it doesn't make sense to post anything, but I will try to give at least a few days advance notice as the TiVo will likely reboot overnight to be updated.

Thanks

Sounds like you might have a problem with the TiVo picking up infra-red interference in the room, maybe from the TV screen, energy-saving bulbs, fluorescent tubes in an aquarium, or direct sunlight. Try repositioning the box so the IR sensor in the front-left corner can't "see" any of these. Also adjusting the backlight on a LCD TV can help.

Depending on the room layout, sometimes the IR from the TV screen bounces off the wall behind you. You may be able to solve that by offsetting the TV and/or STB at an angle.

Are you using a Harmony remote? I had to stop using mine, when I first got my TiVo I decided to use the peanut for a while to get used to it before using my Harmony One. When I did come to use it the delay on it ment that the box seemed really slow and i was constantly repressing buttons just to have it buffer and jump two pages.

I've turned the inter-key delay down to 0 on my Harmony 525 for the TiVO. Makes thinks much snappier, but not quite as snappy as the peanut.

I'm going blind, but I'd seen that already and there's no mention of multiroom?

Neil Berkett also implied about multi room streaming coming in the October update.

Neil Berkett also imply that the next software update for TiVo will be in October, and will feature multi-room streaming from other TiVos in your home:

Just think about October, the second drop. The access your hard drive from another device. Your connected TV would by then know you. It will be recording things the things you've forgot to record.

Bang on. So two TiVO boxes, both connected via ethernet (as well as the cable network) to the same router can both see each other's recordings?

Is this true-if it is I'm getting another tivo! What about streaming to a v box? Did I read somewhere that the v boxes will be getting tivo style ui?

How is the live event issue going, will you be able to soon be able to book direct from Tivo pvr itself?

There is no guarantee on the red button functionality. The update to 15.2 is a precursor to the red button, ie part of the preparation for it.

It has been stated in numerous places that the red button functionality WILL NOT come with the initial roll out, it will be at a later date and no one is giving any guarantees when this will be.

You have been told numerous times that the update has nothing to do with red button. It will be added as an app as soon as its ready.

Stop asking already.

Trust me its true , a very wise man told me ;) This will be an excellent feature , I've seen a demo in a mall of the DirecTV whole home DVR on a trip to the US and it was impressive as I expect this will be.

Could you give us details please Stephen. It's the feature update I've really been waiting for.

Presumably, as it's been rolled out to everyone in a given area, there is no NDA?

Anyone involved in the beta trials is still subject to various nda's. As for the pilot rollout area's I dont know as they will be under different terms.

Woah multi room enabled? Now this really is the one I've been waiting for. If this is confirmed I'll be more than happy to replace the V+ in the bedroom with a 2nd TIVO :D

Try reading the post properly, he didn't say the pilot was a trial. However there is a beta trial still on going within VM and also some selected customers and they are still bound by an NDA.

This current pilot gave the update to 3500 regular customers and is totally seperate from the trials.

How many times do you have to be told red button features will be made available in the future, current estimates are early 2012, this update is the first Major one to arrive, more new features / fixes will happen only when they are ready.

Found the update on my TiVo box this evening (I'm in Cambridge), and I'm *very* impressed by the improved speed.. channel changes are almost instant (as is bringing up the guide). Nice to have the pictures from Sky channels continue when in the guide too.

Will play around with some of the other stuff when I have time - I guess I'd best get a network switch bought too if I'm to connect my TiVo to be able to use the upcoming iPad app!

Dean
