Re: TiVo

Do any of you lucky people with TiVo use it in conjunction with a Harmony remote?

I can't find the specific model in Logitech's database but does it work fine with the codes for V+HD or the US TiVo box?

wickywoowoo 29-03-2011 13:55

Re: TiVo

Both the Tivo downstairs and the V+HD upstairs are connected to HDTV's, but the Box Office service Virgin offer isn't HD.

I do use HDMI to connect to both TV's.

Where is your evidence for that? How do you know what people are thinking or doing? Yes, you know some are complaining about lack of tivo, but you have no knowledge of what other things they consider important and whether lack of tivo fits in their priority list.

All decent people know that lack of tivo is miniscule in the grand scheme of things; it's so obvious there is absolutey no reason to state it. That doesn't preclude them from complaining about the tivo roll out.

Maybe you're assuming that the people on here aren't decent? If that's the case, maybe you need to get a new perspective on people?

The V+ codes will work as far as they go, but the TiVo remote has a few extra buttons that you'll need to teach it.

I set my Harmony 555 up not long after install, gave me something to do while the EPG was updating as it takes a couple of hours to do this after it is first turned on.

If you select Cable box as the device type, Virginmedia as the Make and TiVo as the model it should find it.

However, I still had to teach it some buttons, about 8 or so if I remember correctly. Took me a little while to get it spot on but that was mainly due to the fact I hadn't had to use the Harmony software for over a year.
There may be an easier way to do it but if I honest I just wanted to get it done and check the box out :D

It works well as you would expect from a Harmony remote. My only annoyance is that the 555 model doesn't handle quick button presses on the arrow pad very well which wasn't a problem on my old SA V+ because that was slow anyway but TiVo is lightning quick and the Harmony slows it down a touch. But that is a hardware issue, another model might be OK

Can anyone confirm if the TiVo remote can turn TV sets on and off from Stand By? Much frustration with the V+ remote was that you could alter TV volume but not turn a TV on from stand by, which I've had to keep the original TV remote around for.

Yes it can and you can switch sources on the tv by holding down the text button.

I am assuming so, but considering Cable offered Box Office about 15 years ago on a service less powerful than an iPad is today, I find that Tivo can't offer Box Office ridiculous.

Virgin Movies On Demand is fully on offer yet this is just too much to ask, lol.

Grrrr is all I can say, lol.

The irony being outside David Haye against one of the Klitschko brothers, WrestleMania would be the biggest money maker for Virgin in terms of a live event order.

Not the best time to have an entire channel out of order I guess, lol.

Yeah, I have a decent picture of what the situation is now in my head. After the phone call this morning saying it isn't an option and it will be later, I wasn't left with a great deal of options.

I'll try swapping my set top boxes about on Sunday night and hope the Tivo being disconnected for four hours plus doesn't mess it up, lol.

Wrestling is a soap for men. We all know it's fake, but the storylines are pretty entertaining.

Sure paying £15 for an extended episode of eastenders might sound a bit weird, but it's far more entertaining.

.

You could be right on that one. Having not got a tivo yet, I can't say, but I do wonder that if they wanted to, a person could just use it as a V+ (but with the extra recording space); i.e., just set series links and other recordings and ignore the extra functionality, making basic operation as simple as a V+?

Curious as to how this work, on the current V+ you can only rewind the channel your on.
How does this work with the tivo, can you rewind any 3 channels, or is it 3 that your recording, or is it if your flicking between 3?
Cheers in advance guys.

You can switch between 3 tuners in the mini guide. :)

Yes but, the question was, can you rewind any or all of the three tuners?

I know, but he did say he'd got the S1 and was hoping to continue to use it, same situation as me really ('cept I've already got Virgin's Tivo :D), my S1 has been the 'upstairs' PVR since V+ came along and I had hoped to continue with it but since Tivo are dropping the feed for the S1 in June I may have to look around for something else.

Without owning a TiVo yet, that T3 review pretty much sums up my current thoughts.
The perfect PVR is within touching distance, VM just need to sort out the EPG mistakes & give it the ability to update in realtime, red button, Box Office, the catchup issues mentioned in the review & the ability for it to have suggestions recorded in HD when available. Then I believe we'll have the greatest set top box on the planet. :)

Wasn't the catch-up problems sorted in one of the update?

I don't know because I'm not lucky enough to own one yet, maybe someone else can confirm. I certainly hope that's the case. :D

Re: TiVo

Yeah catchup pretty much works now. There's also iplayer, which sometimes has things not on catchup (in HD if available).

Since the last update Tivo seems to pick HD when it's available (which is somewhat controversial for those who only have SD TVs).

EPG is fine, and for any errors there are feedback channels (eg. the thread on TCF) although I haven't noticed anything major (the one thing I did notice got fixed after it was pointed out.. and in that case Sky had it wrong too..).

Then comes what's proved to be the really hard part: letting the majority of existing customers use the bloody thing! ;)

Interesting that TechRadar & T3 are saying the same thing: It would/will be a Sky+ HD killer if/when certain issues are fixed and polished.

I think this was/is an on-going fix, according to a thread at TCF.

Anyone else noticed that the hard drive doesn't stop buffering?

When I first turn my TiVo on in the mornings I can rewind any of the 3 tuners more or less an hour back. I havn't found a need for this yet but a nice touch.

The other handy feature is when you are fast forwarding through adverts. I don't know about anyone else but no matter how quick your reactions are you never press play quick enough when the adverts stop and have to rewind back a little so you don't miss anything. When you press play on TiVo it actually skips back around 10-15 seconds automatically. I believe this is from the old TiVo's and I find it quite handy (Sad I know)

I don't know. When I had an SDTV I still watched the HD channels when available as the PQ on the HD channels (downscaled by my V+ box) was usually better than the over-compressed SD channels.

It actually depends how fast you are going

It only skips back on the 'really' fast forward options

There's no need to delete them. They'll be deleted automatically when the space is required.

...and am I right in thinking that you can also do what Sky used to criticise V+ for not being able to do?

Record a program from the beginning if the beginning is in the buffer even if it is past the start time.

Of course, if you can, it's times three.

When the majority of people are on TIVO over the next few years with 100meg then available nationwide with possibly 200 meg out , will this have any affect on the network during peak times ? Just thinking with possible YouTube streaming on TIVO possibly Lovefilm etc and potentially higher OD usage.

Re: TiVo

Just noticed this over on the VM TIVO FORUM which was posted last night?

Hi all

As you know we recently launched the BBC iPlayer app on the Tivo service, with numerous advantages such as the complete catch up library, including HD, radio shows and subtitling.

This great app will develop over time and we are working with BBC to find a way to put all the new content into our catch up area, 7 days backwards grid and global search. However while we work on this integration we won't be able to offer access to iPlayer content through these other routes. Instead you can simply press the red button when watching live BBC channels or go straight to the Apps and Games area where you will find the complete iPlayer app. You can search the full BBC library through the app's built-in search functionality.

Thanks

I'd like to retract my statement about HD, it now looks stunning!

The jury is still out on SD unfortunately, maybe I need to get a better TV set as mine is a couple of years old now :p:
