Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
@mjshrimper
They'll be no more bidding this week for the last two Premier League rights packages, which suggests they're a long way off want they want money-wise. Might have to tweak the offer a tad. |

The Financial Times giving their view on the Premier League rights sale. Interesting points made about BT's investment in sport and how it could be viewed as a wasted exercise:

The money, whichever way you look at it, is obscene. Gave up on the Premiership a long time ago. Non-league is where real football and supporters are. tbh, the quality of football isn't much different and the entertainment level higher.

PL have already committed to Ofcom that at least 42 matches must go to secondary broadcasters so this would exclude SKY from bidding on this so called super pack. That would seriously piss SKY off as they currently hold the rights to the near live matches and I imagine, given they dedicated PL channel, that they would like to be able to retain these. The PL do not want to piss SKY off. IMO the only way the PL could make this work would be to exact 10 live games from the packs (maybe the top picks with 10 different times slots, 4 bank holiday, 6 midweek) and then bundle the remaining 30 with the near live rights and clips package. |

Do you believe anything written in that apology for a rag? ---------- Post added at 18:54 ---------- Previous post was at 18:47 ---------- As I understand it, the midweek matches package will be spread over 2 or 3 days (Tues, Wed & Thurs) - presumably ok will all be 7:30 to 8pm. As someone posted, this will suit streaming rather than sky or BT - however it appears either reserve price was too high or bids were derisory. If these packages are sold way below the others there is a distinct possibility that sky and BT will co-operate to bring the main package prices down next time around. Additionally PL will not endear themselves to sky and BT who supply a huge amount of money if others get rights for a fraction of what sky and BT pay. OB was wrong this time, now concentrating on next time - somethings never change. Forgot to say, the streaming of NRL games outside of Australia & New Zealand has now been priced. 8 games available each week for the princely sum of £22 per month - needless to say I have declined and will watch the 2 games a week included in my sky subscription. |
