Perhaps the new channels are
Northern Rock Northern Rock HD and Northern Rock +1 Showing a new series of well intentioned Bankers, headed by a Golden Haired Boy Genius, who also owns an airline & travel Company. Just speculation :):) |

With everyone having listed the channel they most want to be "Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) ..." as the 'likely', 'probably', 'must be' candidate for the elusive 4th channel that has been testing, it seems that it would be rather a disappointment if it was Argos TV. :( I'd like FX+1 but it's even more unlikely than some of the speculations put forward so far. There's almost nothing in the FX On Demand library. Where's Burn Notice for example? When will they have Leverage available? |
What would people prefer out of Disney cinemagic HD, Sky Atlantic HD, Universal HD and ESPN America HD?
Sky Atlantic HD gets my vote. |

Although Argos TV might be quite useful to some (I've never seen it and so can't comment on the format) but in the current economic climate do we really need more shopping, auction and gambling channels and websites? :td:
How many channels have multiple adverts for Bingo websites and have late night gambling programmes? If you make it too easy for people to over extend on credit cards, they will. Where is the nanny state to protect us? Thankfully not in Manchester building a ginormous casino anyway. Three cheers for the House of Lords for stopping that! :) Apparently, this year, the John Lewis Partnership department stores have exceeded their previous record for sales and bizarrely it was last year that was their previous best! Buy now, default later. More entertainment on TV and less armchair spending please. :tu: Heads over to Amazon to check on his order status. :( |

Sky Atlantic HD. Not because I'm desperate for that channel, necessarily, but we already have the others in SD so it would mean extra content. I like to have channels in HD, but its only really sport where I find it that important.

Don't get me wrong, if I have the option I'll watch something on the HD version of the channel showing it, but it isn't the be all and end all, to me. I understand its more important to some, but for me, content is king and I'd take a new channel not previously on the platform over the HD version of a channel we already receive any day of the week. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.
As there hasn't been much 'Coming Soon to Virgin TV ...' recently, I think it is preferable to have new content rather than HD versions of existing channels. I realise that the HD-ready users would like to be making the most of their equipment and enjoying better picture and sound quality but completely new channels would benefit more of us. Depending on what channels we may get, two distinct SD channels is likely to be better than an SD and a HD version of one channel.

Guardian: First 20 UK towns and cities in line for local TV service announced.
Local TV may be coming to a small screen near you soon – but only if you are in one of the 20 towns and cities unveiled by the government. The government also revealed today that BSkyB and Virgin have committed to offering either apps or the use of the yellow button on their interactive services to fulfil the heavily debated obligation that the new local TV services receive "appropriate prominence" on electronic programme guides (EPGs) when they are launched. The first 20 areas to receive local TV services will be: Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton and Hove, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Grimsby, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth, Preston, Southampton and Swansea. The government said a further 24 areas have been identified for a future round of licensing of local TV services. These are: Aberdeen, Ayr, Bangor, Barnstaple, Basingstoke, Bedford, Cambridge, Carlisle, Derry/Londonderry, Dundee, Guildford, Hereford, Inverness, Kidderminster, Limavady, Luton, Maidstone, Malvern, Mold, Salisbury, Sheffield, Stoke on Trent, Stratford upon Avon and York. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...l-tv-announced |

Historically both network capacity and the memory capacity of the set-top-boxes dictated how many channels could be supported. On VM's cable network, dropping the analogue service freed up a lot of bandwidth but with SD and HD versions of some channels co-existing and the general trend towards bandwidth hungry HD channels, Red Button services and On Demand content, the available capacity is soon consumed. A few years ago, Sky couldn't launch any more channels because some older set-top-boxes didn't have the memory capacity to store a larger EPG. I assume customers were ultimately required to replace their old equipment with Sky+ HD boxes if they wanted to receive additional channels. I'm not sure if that has happened with VM yet but there are certainly some old boxes out there still. My Pace Di4000-N V Box probably counts as a 'classic' but some are 'vintage' models. That could restrict the number of additional SD channels that can be supported, so every one is precious and they should be channels that the majority of customers want. As it is, the older boxes can only support a 1-day EPG instead of an 8-day guide and the i-button tends to have limited, often abruptly truncated, programme descriptions. |
