Nothing on my graph aside from a slight latency bump due to a bit of higher utilisation.

There's a fault ref on this according to the VM forums, but no idea when or if VM will get it fixed on their end.

same here. in totally different location. if you do a reverse trace from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tools/traceroute.html when the issue is occurring you will see it happens at the peering point.

I've been getting these issues every night for the past week or so now.

When it starts and i try to log into Gmail or Hotmail i get a notification of possible fraudulent activity as it thinks i'm in a different location.

I'm from Glasgow. When I check my location it always shows as Glasgow. When these issues start happening my location shows as Sunderland.

You can see from the graph it's about to start going haywire again.

Aorta has 300Gb/s on both AmsIX and DECIX. Makes a lot of sense for VM to retire their own Amsterdam and Frankfurt peering, in turn saving on hosting and circuit leasing, and use the family's there and indeed in Paris and Ireland also.

Thanks to Aorta VM also now have public and private peering in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Poland, Slovakia and a whole bunch of sites they previously had no direct connectivity to in the USA, Germany and the Netherlands.

I'm assuming said peering can't perform any worse than their own previous routes... Plus what'll happen to VM's own fibre running from Manchester to AmsIX or was that leased?

In any case that level of reconfiguration isn't trivial, so I'm a little surprised it was "just done" without any fuss.

peering can be worse than 3rd party transit in performance. Depends on how well its managed.

Leased. VM's only fibre outside the UK is the Sirius ring between Great Britain and Ireland.

Far easier than, for example, moving the Telewest AS behind the ntl one and, after that, merging them which was also 'just done'.

This is nothing more than editing an AS macro and some route maps. Looks as though it went slightly wrong, too, given Aorta was taking precedence over VM's own LINX peering for a little while. I guess this might perhaps be due to the pre-existing traffic engineering governing LINX and the TBB route on VM's edge.

Public peering is purely about cost, not performance.

Doesn't VM have dozens of ASNs though, and Liberty Global more still. Or do people still not sanity check/ACL their BGP adverts?

Only with regard to VM's prior Manchester <-> Amsterdam link, which was excruciatingly slow but heavily preferred by VM due to cost.

It was faster going Manchester => London => Paris => Amsterdam via external transit than Manchester <=> Amsterdam direct on VM.

Usually I have been unaffected by previous "humps" in these graphs but mine shows this too.

It's usually just an indication of congestion on the route used between VM and TBB but still hopefully it can be sorted.

No? They have AS5089 and they supply transit for the odd customer who have PI address space.

Liberty are much the same. Bunch of ASNs they advertise for as they supply transit, including their own divisions and VM, but the actual advertisements are from 6830.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I see.

So VM do have another AS that's in use and registered to them.

13076 is a single /24 used purely to wholesale transit. It is separate to make it easier to ensure that it doesn't use VM's peering. It's advertised to 2 transit providers only.

None of the others apart from 5089 are active.

5Ghz wifi cannot be used for the twins' mobiles, turned it off, and now they can't connect at 2.4Ghz.

Very grassy-looking Think Broadband graph so far (once I'd remembered to change the IP and allow pings). :dunce:

Added this on a while ago and only really remembered to look at it. Compared to when I had virgin before, the Maximum latency seems to be all over the place. Is this something I should be logging or was I just lucky before?

That graph is perfectly normal for a VM connection, it looks fine.

Fair enough then. My old connection the graph looked a bit like grass that had been left a week, this one looks like the garden's been abandoned so thought it might have been something wrong.

When you don't use a router the way it is designed (possibly for good reason) then you can't complain when it does not perform at optimum.

VM forum tech is concerned with the T4 messages in the network log, so it is a problem.

Well, last night was fun, my connection went to hell for some reason:

Still showing T-3 after T3 too, I'm going to guess there's an issue with SNR. Weirdly, despite the upstream going completely nuts, the connection is happy enough to stream BBC 6 Music this morning without a trace of a problem. Will report to VM shortly if things do not improve.

I guess you have tried powering down your modem? and looked at your stats?

Upstream
US-1 US-2 US-3 US-4
Channel Type 2.0 N/A N/A 2.0
Channel ID 34 N/A N/A 35
Frequency (Hz) 35800000 N/A N/A 27400000
Ranging Status Success N/A N/A Retries Exceed
Modulation 16QAM N/A N/A 16QAM
Symbol Rate (Sym/sec) 5120000 N/A N/A 5120000
Mini-Slot Size 4 N/A N/A 4
Power Level (dBmV) 46.00 N/A N/A 46.50
T1 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T2 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T3 Timeouts 0 0 0 637
T4 Timeouts 0 0 0 0

Tried factory reset, modem mode, you name it, the US is completely dead.

I rang 150 who said it was an SNR fault but didn't have a F code to see what was going on. Basically I only got online again today after the modem finally gave up on using the channel, and now my internet is fine aside from a much slower upload.

I guess all you can do is complain, if you have already had an engineer out, possibly even threaten to leave if you have a good alternative.
