Big day today - my daughter gets married at 11am this morning.

Excellent night last night - family and friends from all over the country (and further, from Dubai, USA, NZ, Switzerland, etc) got together at the hotel for a meal and some drinkies.

Should really have gone to bed 1:30am.......:D

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4

We're in the middle of a very rare child free 'weekend' (Fri & Sat). Our eldest is away and our youngest in respite until Sunday morning so we actually managed to go out for a meal locally last night with no mishaps!!! Hoping to pop out this afternoon too if nothing goes wrong. :D

It was understandably a bit tense though as last time we had a Fri/Sat break our lad had a major fit at the respite centre and we got an emergency call to head up there ASAP. Luckily we hadn't gone far that evening and in the event we had to give him his emergency medication to terminate the seizure. After turning down the standard ambulance service advice to take him to A&E (really didn't fancy 6 hours on a trolley in a hectic A&E on a Friday night), we had to bring him home semi-conscious and I spent the night sleeping on the floor in his bedroom just in case. Fine weekend break that turned out to be. Fingers crossed this one proves better...

My happy thought is that I have finally finished my Wing Zero model, updated pictures in my model thread. Some of the decals were really fiddly to fit and I managed to muck up one. Not too bad as it doesn't show unless you're being really picky.

A good tip for when cooking chicken Carl, is. if it's not brown and there's blood and pink flesh still showing. it needs cooking more.

Co-incidentally, that's what we used to take guests to/from the hotel to the church for the wedding yesterday (a full-size Routemaster, not a model...;)).

At my pals wedding we used a hippy Mobil to ferry the guests about, complete with flower power paint job, predictably the bloody thing broke down on the way, still happy memories. I'll post a pic if I can find one later

Finally back online after my infinity connection went down last Friday.

Engineer turned up at 09:00 this morning, ran some very in depth tests, with his JDSU tester, he also checked the junction box outside and also the physical telephone cable. Replaced the infinity filtered telephone socket and the hub and OpenReach Modem. All in all I'm glad he was thorough. He even requested that BT Wholesale perform a complete reset of my line as well :)

Looks like a nice TV. I do wonder about the 3D glasses though. I realise you have to use them but I would hate to have to buy enough pairs for all the family at that price. I have tried quite a few but in my case they don't work well over my prescription glasses which I have to use as I can't focus on the screen without them.

It depends on the TV - mine for example uses passive 3d and you can use 3d glasses from the cinema which are around 80p a pair or something like that.

It also came with clipons to go on glasses - not that any of it is much use to me :)

But there are options ;)

Shame you can't get the most out of your TV.

I use a cheap pair when we visit friends and find them annoying. They slip all over the place and I end up having to hold them on to keep them in line with my glasses. OK for short periods but when we watch a full length film the novelty of 3D wears a tad thin, my arms start to ache and I end up getting told off for fidgeting like a 2 year old. :D

I may just investigate the clip on variety which seem a little more reasonably priced, just have to find some designed so that the clip doesn't obscure my vision.

I ran the Mens 10K in Glasgow today for the second time. I was faster by 90 seconds than last year despite a touch of the... erm Paula Radcliffes.. with 2K to go.

I did a 5k run yesterday for the first time ever - on the treadmill - managed 31 minutes - my aim is to spend the next 5 or 6 months getting that down to 25 minutes.

We bought it because it was £359 with our discount. We'll get a 10% reduction on the bins as well. There's only the Wife and myself watching usually so it seems good value for money :)
Not really that interested in 3D at all, just seemed to be a decent 40" TV for the money.

That's a good start. You'll get down to 5 min Kilometres in less than 5 or 6 months. If it's possible try running outside, it's a lot easier than on a treadmill.

I'm in training for my first 5k which I'll then extend to 10k and so on. There are some great apps out there which help. There's a good one on the NHS website called 'Couch to 5k' which uses interval training along with a motivational voice-over coach. It tells you how long to run for then how long to walk etc and gradually adjusts until it's a full out 5k run. I've lost almost a stone since the end of April using mine and I'm aiming for the Swansea Bay 10k in September :)

Go Russ, I'm 5' 4" and having given up smoking (after 25 years) I am now 8 and a half stone and can run for the bus without feeling like I'm going to suffer a heart attack.

Good for you Russ.

There are also handy sport trackers for smartphones that monitor your speed, distance and altitude... good for tracking your workouts and monitoring your improvement.

The one I use can be downloaded to your phone here:
http://www.endomondo.com

I use the free option, it does everything I need.

I've got endomondo as well but what I need is something that tells me when it's time to run or walk. I get distracted very easily and can't rely on checking the time etc. The ones I use have a voice that tells you when to do it, when you're at the halfway point and it has been scientifically produced so the speed and distance increments are optimal and appropriate for the pace.

I see what you mean. I prefer getting distracted - the runs go in quicker.

I just used lamposts when I was walking / running. Depending on the spacing between the lamposts, I'd run for a couple then walk for one and increased the runs as I got fitter. That plan falls apart if you're using country roads and the next town/ lampost is 5 miles away;)

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4

Because of my ADHD the distraction would mean I'd focus on the fatigue etc so I need something like that - I usually listen to Radio 2 podcasts instead of music so I can zone in on the conversation. The running app works on top of it so it's all good. I tend to run through local villages and towns, fields etc and can't rely on lamp-posts.

It's certainly working, On each session I'm running for a total of between 16-18 minutes which is pretty good when you consider at the end of april I'd struggle to make 7 minutes. Funnily enough the month I turn 38 sees me in the fittest and healthiest shape I've been in for about 10-15 years. I moved to Leicester over 2 years ago and my weight crept up and couldn't shift it. A radical change of domestic situation and lifestyle sees me making gains I couldn't imagine achieving even a few months ago :)

Another shortish dose of vitamin D with a novel and a breeze as soft as a chiffon scarf. It was so nice that I fell asleep.

(And now: the washing to do :D )

Just heard that our youngest's DLA claim has been agreed at the same level as before. I must say doing the review (for a child over 16) was extremely trying and tear-jerking but it has to be done. It's so difficult writing down all the things that make living/dealing with our lad so tough and I feel as if I've been terribly disloyal by doing so. However, we'd been dreading this for some time so to learn it's done and dusted (so far as these things ever are) is a great relief and now we can get on with trying to give him the best life we can.
