Yeah, you need a return path for VOD... when IPTV is launched, then it will be even harder as you will need a return path to get broadcast channels, not just VOD.

Will the older boxes do IPTV?? If not then I doubt whether VM will phase out the old boxes any time soon..

no, the older boxes wont AFAIK... I'd of thought it would be a staged rollout and phaseout the older boxes, a bit like analogue to digital upgrades were done. so may take some time! :)

Will the current V+ and V HD boxes do it or is it purely the up and coming Tivo based boxes?? If the latter only then it's gonna be a long time before VM phase them out.. Look how long it took them to get to Nagra3 and also to phase out analogue

V-HD boxes are ipTV ready, the current V+ (SA) (not sure about Samsung) isn't AFAIK. It will probably take a while to upgrade everyone before they can switch off the old broadcast system.

Because it's still a broadcast technology, not unicast.

The cable that comes into your house is shared, it's not a direct 1-to-1 connection, you take a tap off the same cable as your neighbours. So anything sent to you, is also sent to people in same neighbourhood who share the same cable.

This means that even if the platform was upgraded to a switched video system, where channels are only sent on request people with dodgy boxes could still watch channels that others within the same area have tuned to.

Even now with VOD, if you have a dodgy box you can tune to the VOD streams that are being used in your area and watch them. It's not that useful with VOD because you're reliant on someone watching what you want to watch when you want to watch it, but if all linear TV was delivered in the same way using SDV then you'd find the boxes were quickly upgraded to be able to view whatever channels are currently being sent to the area.

There has to be some sort of encryption on the wire to stop people taking advantage of that, you can only stop the boxes from using the return path to request channels, you can't stop them listening in on the cable for any that are being sent down it.

Well the couple that wind me up the most are still in denial. They are convinced the VM wouldn't cut their own throats and lose so many free loaders ... or 'potential customers' as they describe themselves .... before the end of the World Cup.

They smugly inform me that this new secure encryption rumour is just a diabolical scam by VM and that the new cards have already been cracked. Their contact for dodgy boxes has promised them a fix for any missing channels as soon as his brother-in-law's mate gets a couple of minutes to knock out some of his revised magic cards. :D
