To be fair, that one has to be coded from the ground up I'd imagine. It's not simply a case of dumping the source code that handles the red button functions from the older V or V+ HD boxes. As I know it, the TiVo Premiere uses Java (i.e. the "old" looking parts of the UI which were clearly optimised for 4:3 SD sets) with Flash overlay for the HD parts, and the older boxes Virgin used are something entirely different.

Every time you press the red button on a sky channel it sends a small electric shock to Rupert's nether-regions! It's my new number one used feature!

Plus if the CNBC red button app is anything to go by, the red button apps are separate from the main code downloads.

Sky Movies subscribing App added to Tivo although l see the Sky Sports one is still advertising August's highlights.

zekeisaszekedoes 23-09-2011 12:07

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I was hoping VM would add a temporary subscription option to the Sky Sports channels, I'll be honest. When you load the new app it boasts "75p per day!", which for certain events I'd be happy to pay for 24 hour access. Temporary passes would be better than spending £22.50/month when I'm not going to watch those channels most of the time.

I suppose it's asking a lot, but if PPV access is going to be added for big events like WBA boxing matches, why not PPV on Sky Sports or Movies channels for a week or less? It might tempt some of the more fairweather sports fans like myself to eventually upgrade to a sports package if the household finds it useful.

Just a thought!

The trouble is that l suspect Sky dictates the carriage terms of their contract with Virgin and l somehow doubt they would allow Virgin to do this unless they were doing it themselves.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Yeah, I thought it might be too much to ask. The clue is Sky channels not watchable in the top-right PiP when you're in any HD TiVo menus. Sky are such rip-off merchants, it's a shame they have the rights to so many event these days and people are happy to pay to be gouged, even VM customers by proxy.

My TiVo crashed & rebooted again during my evening viewing yesterday.

Has it been mentioned that the new update will include stability fixes to iron out these crashes?

I've not any such problems with mine-I wouldn't be waiting for an update if I were you, I'd be expecting a replacement for my faulty box.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Mine's frozen up a few times and rebooted itself. Only had it a week, too. Since it's a brand new box it is most likely a firmware issue.

Still, it's way more reliable than the Super Hub. :D

I've only had 1 reboot in all the time I've had mine (since December '10) it sounds like you have a possbile signal issue, I'd give TiVo faults a call.

Our Tivo has done a couple of strange things this evening.

First, when it started recording Come Dine With Me on 4HD it changed channel as if it was on a V+ reminder. This was the only recording programmed.

Second, after I changed it back to BBC 1HD, the mini guide flashed on and off a few times during the next 10 minutes or so (along with the press red button logo top left).

These are in addition to the momentary picture freezes and sparodic re-boots.

Cheers

The mini-guide on our tivo flashes up quite regularly with no one pressing the remote also.

Froze up again while I was watching a HD recorded Rugby game from Friday (Australia drubbing USA). I pressed left to go back to My Shows after the game had finished, with the recording still playing, and it loaded the red VM HD backdrop, PiP window still in the top corner playing... then nothing else for five minutes. I had to hold down the power button on the front to trigger a hard reset, ruining the recording of something else in the background.

It's done something like this four times and I've only had it 8 days. Not good enough. If I can't rely on it, there's no point paying for it.

l must be lucky as the only problem l get sometimes with the Tivo is the odd failure to update information on the EPG.

If the UI locks up but the video still plays you could try the shortcut to reset the UI. Press Thumbs Down, Thumbs Up, Play, Play and after about 10 seconds it should reset the UI without rebooting the box or losing any in-progress recordings.

Tried that half a dozen times, nothing. Proper locked up and unresponsive requiring a full reboot.

Here is the code list,

http://www.virginmedia.com/tivo/tv_remote_code_list.pdf

Or you could try this?

Quote:

Searching for a TV remote control code

1. Press and hold down https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/24.gif and https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/25.gif at the same time until the light on the top of the remote flashes green twice.
2. Enter the code 0999 to access the TV code database – the LED will flash green twice.
3. Press CHANNEL UP until a code turns off the TV – the LED will flash green each time a code is sent.
4. When the TV turns off, release channel up and press standby https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/09/7.gif on the remote to turn the TV back on.
5. Press https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/26.gifand https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/27.gif to check that the remote is working with your TV. If they don’t, continue to search using channel up until the next code turns off the TV, and repeat steps 4 and 5.
6. When the Volume and Mute keys work, press https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/28.gif to store the code. The LED will then flash green twice.
7. If you reach the end of the code database, the light on top of the remote will give an extended red flash and exit programming mode.

Really lots of complaints about how the Sky HD could also do with improvement http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1538385

No system is perfect, if you have come from another platform it always takes a while to get used to something but after while you get used to it. CC has always been one of the worst offenders with EPG data error. But in this case it is not EPG error just the fact that they are showing random episodes of Friends so it is hard to set a series link to watch from the beginning.

Where did I say similar? Each platform will have issues some on here seem to think Sky HD is perfect because of it's simplicity.

I've never said it's perfect it has issues but the problems you highlighted are limitations of the hardware , something people should research before buying the product. It's features maybe deemed basic when in comparison to TIVOs advanced features however it does the basics well and this all starts with a reliable EPG , in no way is it perfect they are both different I've used TIVO and personally quite like it , it really depends what you want.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I don't know... slow UI, inconsistent remote control keymap, tendency to lock up and some other gripes aside, I quite like it too. The problem I have is it's good when it so easy could be made great... close but no cigar as the old idiom goes.

Does anyone know if we will have to reset any series links if you have any on the effected channels?

The link should follow as it's the same channel just on a different number, rather than the programme moving channels

Virgin Media is also launching the second phase of its multi-million pound TiVo advertising strategy, with its very own tickle. Since Virgin Media TiVo became available, tens of thousands of customers have discovered what the company believes is the best way to watch TV, ever. The new TV and digital activity will continue the successful creative fronted by Marc Warren, star of Hustle and Mad Dogs, with direct response channels highlighting extra savings by offering free box activation for new and existing customers, saving them £49.95. The full campaign, launched in July, has been created by DDB UK and involves TV, digital, retail and social media executions

Has it been mentioned that the new update will include stability fixes to iron out these crashes?

Just to follow this up, my TiVo box has been running like a dream up until yesterday evening when I was watching a recording! :(

Is it definitely going to be a faulty box or could it be somehow related to the signal levels etc? I'm just not looking forward to the thought of having to set up all my series links again and teach the new TiVo my likes and dislikes.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Chances are they would swap the box regardless. I'd advise waiting for the update unless the reboots become too frequent.

Any news about bbc red button and sky sports red button on tivo. Will they be coming in a small update this year ? According to this there will be small updates after the big update.

Bcfc,

As I've said in a separate post, the introduction of new features to TiVo planned for the second half of this year will not come all in a single update.

I just hope to set expectations because it seems that a rumour has been heavily perpetuated on this board that there is one all encompassing update to come. In actuality, there will be a large update, but other feature updates will follow very soon after this update (as their introduction had the update itself as a dependency).

I will only get Tivo when they announce when sky sports red button is coming.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

free activation for tivo 500gb is on the virgin media website starts tomorrow. If you click it goes to the old offer which ends today
http://shop.virginmedia.com/existing-customers.html
So i think in total you will be paying £ 40 for installation £ 9.95 less than it is currently. It does not mention the 1TB tivo which I think activation fee might be £49.95 less than is currently so it might be £50 and then £ 40 installation. So i think in total you might pay £ 90 for the 1TB tivo 9.95 less than it is currentlyhttp://img839.imageshack.us/img839/2...tingcustom.png
It has now been removed from the virgin media website

As I said before, there is no point in speculating. It will be fully updated tomorrow with the changed pricing struture

Thanks for pointing out that image has gone up early though

No it's not. Sky Premium HD is only 'free' with VIP 50 and VIP 100

Will existing TIVO and Prem HD customers get the £7 charge dropped?

No you won't. The Sky Premium HD pricing is not changing (except for those with multiple HD charges as previously discussed). I have flagged that incorrect information is being provided

well remember MM VM still got to pay sky for sky premium HD they could not give it everyone free hope the mistaking information is sorted soon only way can get it free is VIP 50 or VIP 100 package and vip 50 is well worth the money IMHO and even better value you now premium HD going to per account instead of per box

Yes HD does cost more than SD, But what I meant about Dave why would they need all of that new stuff when all the show are from the BBC? So why would they need new studios etc.

Dave you seem to have missed the point that VM just resell channels now , meaning they dont need to spend on all the equipment and studios that Sky do http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=4105 this doesn't come cheap.
