You mean "Pirate cable box makers are squeezing the last bit of revenue they can out of people". That just enables access to a public cardsharing server, and those things really don't last too long.

Once the n3 rollout is complete you'll see VM switch their attention to actively preventing cardsharing.

Just so you know it's not just the unemployed that steal cable, most of my mates have had these boxes (at one time) and they all have jobs they just got the boxes because it was a cheap way to save money.

The local pub even had one he used to roll out on match days in the back room

Why does cable need to rely on encryption, surely with a true return path cable companies should be able to tell paying customers from ones that are using dodgy boxes?

They cut the return paths on the boxes to stop them calling home, in any event how does one protect the signal without encryption?

Yeah, you need a return path for VOD... when IPTV is launched, then it will be even harder as you will need a return path to get broadcast channels, not just VOD.
