Surprised because the club is Chelsea and they weren't under any real obligation to sell. He is surprised for the same reason everyone else is surprised.

Not sure he was under any obligation to sell Ashley Cole...

He's not gone yet...But he apparently wants to, so that's the only reason we'd sell him. Same as De Bruyne last week. If they want out it's pointless keeping them. In an ideal world it would have been better to sell him to a team in another country. Nobody else have made a bid it seems.

Well he wanted to go, there was the tiff with Chelsea over the alleged tapping up and Arsenal needed the money with the stadium arriving. Still, that was 10 years ago. Wenger was asked a question and answered it. That's all that happened. He wasn't even mean.

And Mata wants to go as he can't break in to the 1st team this year and wants to be in contention for the World Cup.

Yes he answered a question, no doubt about that. It's just his answer doesn't make sense when you consider what he's talking about (Mourinho selling to a rival) is something Wenger has done more than any of the other top PL teams.

I suspect the issue of players changing teams in the same league mid-season might be looked at for next year so that players are 'league-tied' in the same way they're cup tied. I also think they need to stop loans within the same league as well as City and Chelsea have cottoned onto the idea of buying some great players and then loaning them out to teams in the same league.

The whole concept of players belonging to a club to whom a large fee is needed if you wish to secure their services is a restriction too. This is football. The NFL does it. They have a much healthier approach to their league IMO.

Quote:

We should be different because it creates a situation where clubs can stockpile great players, loan them out, and having a case where the league is stronger for everyone but them. Chelsea's rivals have to face a Everton team with Lukaku and Chelsea do not.

Because if we can find a better system then we should move to it and it's a relatively new phenomenon that clubs can loan out excellent players to their rivals. It's been discussed before and it's going to come up again.

Also we should be open to ideas from other successful leagues. Although the draft system is not possible in the Premier League it's a great example of an attempt to level the playing field. I would support wage caps and a draft system to make the PL a lot more competitive. However it wouldn't work because players would be poached by the European clubs.

It's not moaning. He expressed an opinion after being asked a direct question. A manager can't talk in anything other than PR friendly soundbites and must not dare express a single opinion, even if it's one expressed by others as well. The kind of bland football you people want is depressing. Imagine how unhappy Bill Shankly and Bryan Clough would have made you lot.

The loan clause of 'cant play against owner club' needs to be shot of, that I agree with but league-tie a player? if x player has faced a team in the league home and away then that player cannot play a further game against that side in the league for another side? thats interesting. Still though Wenger needs to snap up a striker.

Nah. Too many rules.

I think they should have transfers all year round. This window thing is daft. It inflates prices.

Rules are fine. They ensure the competitiveness of the sport. I think there should be one transfer window and the team with which you start is the one with which you should end.

he could be useful but a word of caution. he was getting poor ratings in the Milan team but that could somewhat be forgiven for the dysfunctional state the club is in, was in.

I'm happy with nocerino, he's solid, always liked him at Palermo and.juventus..

It obviously made sense - someone who wasn't being played got sold with almost £15m profit. It was a good piece of business for them.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

It is still is all very weird. I can't quite understand why Chelsea seemed fine with this deal when they didn't want to sell him to PSG just a few months ago. Maybe it does make some sense for them in meeting FFP, which would be an good sign, but Manchester City will probably be the ones to test and break FFP anyway and I imagine Chelsea will then follow suit along with everyone else once that happens.

Maybe the size of the bid and a perception that it isn't what United need most that made them willing to do the deal. Maybe it leaves less money for a big signing where United are weak but if United are willing to go beyond £20 million for Luke Shaw then transfer funds are clearly not a problem for Moyes. Hell rumours are Rooney will get nearer £300,000 a week!

Thats an interesting one. After missing out on Ozil there were reports everywhere in France that Mata was top of PSGs list. Ozil cost 42m£. May be Chelsea didnt want to strengthen them further like Arsenal ? or it may just have been Chelsea need of depth, Jose did bang on about needing a proper squad for all comps.

Man City get bank rolled by Mansours empire. What has Roman got to bank roll via 'third party' ?

Utd need a CL spot or they could face a squeeze at a time of needing to rebuild.

In one sense it is. But a buy most would like in their team.

This is the opposite of the summer, where they prevaricated and made bids for players they were unlikely to get (particularly at the amounts they offered).

They seem to be looking for more players now, which makes for an interesting window

I don't think you can ever call signing a proven, world class player as a panic buy. Maybe if it's the only signing we make it could be considered a little panicky otherwise I don't buy that idea.

I base that on two points. Man Utd needed to do something, or the season could potentially get worse. And the current assessment is that Mata is duplicating what you have (someone to play behind the striker), whilst a more out and out central midfielder is needed.

But...I did say..in one sense it is,,,hence my clarifying comments.

And, it is a player lots of clubs would like, my other caveat.

If Stevenage had got that early goal then it might have been more of a match Mark.

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

I wouldn't call him a panic buy - Fellaini was that. Yes United desperately need another Keane/Scholes/Cantona but firepower was also needed. I'm still unconvinced by Welbeck, Hernandez has never shown the form from 2010, Januzaj is still developing and RVP has not been the player he was last season. Yes Rooney has been our best player so far but you've seen what happens when he's out of the team for any length of time.

So while Mata isn't the key signing Moyes needs, he IS a good signing and will benefit the team although the deal does have a feel of "Look, here's a big name" to it. Which is fine by me in this case.

I never said he wasn't a good player. I just questioned whether the purchase was a planned one. Perhaps a opportunistic purchase might be closer to the truth.

You can have a panic buy of a good player - although not in the same 'league' as it were, Fellaini is a good player.

I think the purchase was planned - United tried to get him during the summer. Perhaps they were waiting for assurances from Rooney before making the move.

A panic buy that springs to mind has to be the Andy Carroll one by Liverpool and Mata has been trailed by several big clubs for the last 6 months so l would not regard it as a panic buy but a opportunity that opened itself up quickly.

Mr Pharmacist 26-01-2014 11:19

Re: Football Season 2013/14 & Summer Window

I don't see what's hard to understand about Mata going now and not last summer. Since then he's not played as much as he wanted to, he asked to leave, and that's it basically. The same with De Bruyne, Essien and Bertrand on loan to Villa. I would have loved them all to stay and fight for their places, but as I've said before, if they want out let them go. No point keeping an unhappy player, no matter who he is. Being a World Cup year plays a part in their decision as well, but I don't believe there's a club manager anywhere that would pick someone just so they can make a countries squad.

That is how a draw should be, I hate manipulated draws. if i had my way, teams from same league could be drawn earlier in the champions league. I prefer luck of the draw.
