Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
If you are using a Motorola SB5101E on the Virgin network then you need to really change to Ethernet as USB connection has not been supported for almost 3 years.
Plus if you are using Vista then it will not work anyway. The drivers are available on the Virgin site but are not supported by them and you can find them here. http://www.virginmedia.com/help/broa...sb-drivers.php If they do not work do not call support as they will be unable to offer support and will just advise you to upgrade to Ethernet. |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Do you need any software to upgrade to ethernet, or is it simply the different cable?
Please excuse my ignorance! Thanks |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Simply a different cable

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Ah, great.
My problem is that my old computer died, my temporary one doesn't have the software to speak to my Motorola surfboard 5101E since its pretty ancient, I've lost the CD and struggling to gather what I need to download... So the simple switching to an ethernet cable might do the business? Please assume that I know absolutley nothing, since thats true! |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Just switch to an ethernet cable. Your PC should pick up the connection instantly.
You may need to switch off the modem entirely for around 10-20secs and then back on to get it to recognise the new connection though. |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Great! Even if the computer's old old old? Its windows XP, but it must be one of the very earliest versions.
Thanks again. Trying to make sure I'm connected over xmas... |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
As long as the network card is set to automatically get an IP address (DHCP) then it'll find the modem and you should have instant internet, remember though what's already been said when you change from USB to ethernet you need to reboot the modem and then start the PC

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Great. Do all computers have a network card as standard these days?
|
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
90%+ of motherboards have them built in, laptops though tend to be supplied with a Wifi chipset insted of standard ethernet
|
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Right. It is a laptop, but as I mentioned, its pretty old.
|
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Make/Model?
|
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
Now you're asking...
Its an Acer. Very basic model. Unfortunately I've not got it infront of me. Could maybe tell you later in the afternoon. I really appreciate your help! |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
No probs, the model number will allow anyone to go only and grab the hardware specs of the laptop.
If it hasn't got ethernet built in then there are options like USB or PCMCIA ethernet cards. Or if you have/aquire a wifi router then you can use (if fitted) an internal wifi chipset or even usb dongle You can though go back to using the USB modem as Moldova has provided you with the driver in post #62 |
Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed
I'll give that software a try, although from looking back in through the posts, there may be a slight difference from the software available there and my modem. The available software is for the SB5101, not the one with the E at the end. I'm not sure if this still makes any odds?
