VM could have an equivalent to Sky Q right now if they wanted. It's called Tivo Bolt. Or the software in the Bolt in VM Hardware.

But you know what would happen there don't you? Sly would withold any 4K channels and they would be 'Coming Soon' again.

If you want Sky Sports 4K it'll be available via SkyQ on the Sky Platform don't expect it anywhere else. BT Sport 4K is exclusive to its own TV platform.

No, they won't and that is exactly why VM need to get some content of their own, or sign up to contracts with providers who can provide such content.

However the problem with relying on others is that VM has nothing to bargain with.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

My concern regarding the launch of Sky Q and 4K content on the platform is that Sky will step down the bitrates of the HD movies and sports feeds we get. I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine it when we saw the picture quality of SD versions fall when we couldn't get the HD versions on Virgin Media, and I wouldn't put it passed Sky to do similar again.
Not that the HD we get from Sky on VM is anything to write home about - I compared two TiVo recordings I had of the movie Hugo, one recorded from Sky Movies, the other from 4HD, and I couldn't believe the difference, the 4HD one was massively superior whereas the Sky picture lacked sharpness and 'sparkle'.

Not strictly true; it has almost 4m households with cable TV services which is a large audience for any subscription service. What VM lacks is unique content to negotiate with, but I for one would not be happy if my monthly price was to rise yet again for stuff I don't want.
I for one am quite happy to have VM sitting out the overpriced auctions for sport and other content.

I never watch Sky Movies on the channels. On Sky all the Premieres are delivered over Satellite and instantly playable and are excellent quality in fact the file sizes are far higher than the downloadable versions. As an example Avengers Age of Ultron is showing 7.03GB compared to the downloadable file of 4.34GB.

If you're compressing video in real time going out on a live channel then you can't do the additional analysis and optimisations that you can on a file that's being delivered for download so it's not entirely a fair comparison.

You seem unaware I was comparing push VOD to pull VOD rather than live TV delivered.

The above figures were as follows
Age of Ultron (Push VOD delivered via Satellite) 7.03GB
Age of Ultron (Pull VOD downloaded via your BB connection) 4.34GB

Ah, I've never been a Sky customer and I thought you were still on about the movie channels.

There are play lists on Vevo as well, but I will definitely miss VM Music On Demand.

Is it the whole of the Music OnDemand service that's being removed, or just the playlists then? Sorry if I've missed something.

Judging by how the number of music videos have been reduced, I think that Vevo is replacing the service, but I haven't seen anything that confirms this.

My own belief is that we will get Vevo instead of Virgin VOD.
