I want to use my old windows xp disc to upgrade (fresh install) not upgrade my windows 7 installation so I'm not sure I can do the download thing.

That doesn't work for an upgrade anymore as far as I'm aware http://www.ghacks.net/2012/07/04/win...-not-possible/ you can only use an upgrade disc with an already installed OS

Otherwise you'll have to buy the full version

Trouble is I don't think I can upgrade my windows 7 (as It's a MSDN one).

I guess I'll just cancel the order.

As far as I know, all it checks is that it's a valid Windows install - it doesn't have to have all the hardware working

So potentially, if it doesn't upgrade from W7, then wipe and install XP, then upgrade immediately from the 1st XP boot

Is it possible to upgrade from a retail windows 7 to windows 8... and then at a later date downgrade back to windows 7, and even upgrade back to windows 8 at a later time?

In place upgrade shouldn't be an issue as that is designed in - but again the earlier OS has to be installed. Any downgrade would have to be a wipe and re-install with the lower OS as far as I know.

with a call to MS you should be able to do what you want with Retail
