I have just renewed my car insurance and the premiums this year have sky rocketed. The broker I have used for years could do no better than a 33% rise on last year. Needless to say I have a different broker now but the increase is still 20%.

The industry has taken a quantum shift from risk based on individuals. location etc. to a collective risk whereby everyone who pays for legality accepts the losses encountered by fraud and law breakers.

Personal injury claims both real and fraudulently claimed are partly to blame with fraud estimated as being a cost of £40 per premium to every legitimate purchaser. Uninsured drivers and those with insurance on impossible to claim from foreign insurance are reckoned to be responsible for another £30.

Per individual there is an increase of £70 per head to cover mainly criminal activity with even more added because the industry claims low or no profitability.

The real discrimination is against law abiding individuals whether male or female and IMO the trend towards low premiums is over. This female choice is nothing more than part of a trend which will see premiums heading back to historic higher levels to pay for poor law enforcement and give big profits back to insurers.

All of the arguments as to the reality of female drivers being a lower risk which although true is irrelevant when all payers are seen as a collective pool of income irrespective of individual circumstances.

You mean when they can't discriminate against someone taking out life insurance at 55+ without having to pay through the nose in premiums.

This ruling could bring down the whole insurance structure as we know it.. Once they say no to one criteria then they have to say no to the rest..

Age, location, experience, type of car owned, previous accident, points are all now fair game to anyone willing to take it to the ECHR

Well with car insurance there's 'sex' discrimination where if you were a woman you get cheaper insurance.

there's also 'age' discrimination where if you're young you usually pay more.

this ruling is based on 'sex' discrimination. so the next thing would be to do away with all discrimination.

But if a young person takes out life insurance he/she can get it at the lowest premium possible.

No we're discussing gender being denied as a reason for different premiums and the implications that will have for insurance as a whole.

Something to think about

Because I too have experienced massive upward shifts in policy costs (and I have a gazzilion years of no claims, I'm 45, not in a 'risky' profession, low crime postcode, own drive etc etc)

I'm failing to understand why:
Theres more cars on the roads (more premiums paid)
The roads are safer than ever (statisticly less accidents, 'safety cameras' etc etc
ANPR cameras monitor all traffic and it's relatively easy to see who's not got tax, insurance etc.

In conclusion, more cars, more premiums paid, less pay outs.

So why the heck is my (and everyone elses premiums going up???

And while I'm on the subject, what's with this persvasive 'creep' of privacy invasion.
Now all the policies say 'do you have a criminal record' no, not traffic violations which is a fair question, but *any* criminal offence.

I'm a believer in that; If a product or service is relevant to that kind of vetting, that's fair enough. e.g. you wouldn't want a paedophile working in a school say. I fail to see why an insurance company needs to know if you have a criminal record or not beyond traffic violations. (I don't incidently)

Actually, I wish there was a regulator for insurances like the Off's for other industries. OffInsure or something, because I believe these people are just blatently profiteering. Unless anyone has any evidence to disprove that.

More cars, more crashes.

That and the cost per crash goes up as everyone involved in a bump seems to have 'whiplash' which mysteriously only manifests itself after they get home and see a no-win, no-fee ambulance chaser advert on TV.

Derek: I'd agree with the second part, but aren't our roads safer than ever? with less deaths per annum than the previous year etc (and that's with more cars too)

They probably are but I would think a fatal crash is cheaper for the insurance company to deal with than a non-fatal, serious injury crash.

More people survive crashes these days, maybe because modern cars crumple so easily to take the shock.

People saved, cars written off... still a big bill for the insurers.
