You could also install the package "unrar" .. search Synaptic for "rar". |

Re: Ubuntu Linux help in >> this thread <<
I love surfing and email etc with google chrome using linux, i dont have antivirus with it as apparently i dont need it but with windows i use newsgroups etc and just cant seem to get my head round how to do it with linux, i need a step by step guide i think, ive googled myself for hours but to little avail lol
i can access where the tested downloads of small files are but cannot seem to unpack them, even if they are not rar, or zip etc, once i can do that then i'll try to move on to configure newsgroups which ive been doing with windows for years. Sorry to ramble but i really like linux and would love to be able to do with it what i do with windows, maybe virtually like wine or something. Thanks for the help and replies. |

Did you try Richard M`s advice about installing the unrar package? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux help in >> this thread <<
Just wondering if someone could explain ppa's again as I just can't get it.
Are they what you need to automatically update programs to new/beta versions of software or are they something else? Also how do I go about updating Amarok as I have no idea how. |

I dont actually use Amarok myself but i think i`ve seen more people wanting to know how to downgrade it back to the 1.4* builds because they`re not too happy with the complete rewrite it had.:erm: |
Re: Ubuntu Linux help in >> this thread <<
Hmm im not sure how I installed it as I followed a guide online.
How would I go about uninstalling it and then reinstalling it via the package manager to get updates? |

Regardless of how you installed it though you should still be able to remove it by opening Synaptic and looking in there for it. Try pressing the origin button, then looking in Local, local/main and Local/non-free for anything you`ve installed from outside the repo`s. If you added any third party repo/ppa to install Amarok from then removing that from your software sources list then reloading everything before installing the version that`s actually in the repositories is the way to go. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux help in >> this thread <<
I think it was on ubuntugeek but on the notepad file I have it just says "sudo apt-get install amarok" so I assumed I installed it that way.
Thanks for the tip im having a go at it now |

When i 'right click' on an 'exe' in the downloads folder, it says 'unable to elevate access to administrator, error 1'. I feel i'm almost there but i'm trying to open and run 'exe' files, and also set up newsgroups etc, now pulling my hair out lol |

Code:
dpkg -l | grep amarokThe only UbuntuGeek/Amarok guide i can find is this guide here ......which is a actually a guide to install a fork of the no longer supported 1.4. Just as i had mentioned people were doing earlier strangely enough. Quote:
Exe`s are Windows Executables and you cant use them in Linux, not unless you have wine installed and even then that`s a bit hit and miss. EDIT: Reminds himself, yet again, to reload thread when distracted....... |
