Again, Even more people would not be able to do the above if you spun Foreign companies. This company, which despite this contract, employs several workers who are British and the company is French! So you can tell them where to stick it, but it's just more unemployed Brits.

The boat and shipping them over can't come cheap, especially when they have perfectly able bodied workers outside with placards, perhaps the rumours are true about a lot of them not being properly trained and failing drink and drugs test aren't without foundation.

Tbh nothing shocks me with Total, they are a company I have had nothing to do with for a long time, their activities in Burma have aided the Junta's genocide against the Karen people and should have lead to a mass boycott of their products long ago.

Of course British workers don't do drink and drugs....

Or Total could just refine it elsewhere?

No, but they'll know dam well not to produce any jobs here anymore. They'll just go elsewhere.

trying to protect our jobs/families seems to be a common goal [perhaps its the common market finally kicking in ;)]

Well, I am not 'overly' pro-French. If I were it would because I actually have French nationality (although I am actually British). If you read back a few posts I actually made a negative comment of the French system, the one you seem to be advocating, as it is partly responsible for a continued trend of high unemployment. Even before the recession it was very high.

The country is immaterial. My point was if you tell these companies is do as you say, give British workers the jobs, and restrict them, why would they want to set up here?

Jobs will be lost if you impose these kind of rules on companies? The recent strikes send a message to Total, and why would they want to set up more of their company here if this is what happens?

So Total should have given the work to the French, as it's a French company?

They may well be acting completely legally and it just goes to show that legal doesn't always mean right thing to do. I do wonder if those shouting it's ok would be doing so if it were their livelihoods under threat from this and i don't think they would. It's easy to say it's legal and ok when your not the one affected by it but a whole different story if your going home each night wondering how long you might have before you lose your house and can't afford to look after your family. They are protesting trying to save jobs and work and some on here are slating them for it so i suppose they should all just shut up march quietly to the dole queue so the righteous minority on here can then have a go against benefit claimants being lazy and drinking stella allday. Damned if they do and damned if they don't welcome to modern britain.

Good input, well done, pity you couldn't be bothered to finish that sentence with 'if they want to keep their jobs'. Also their employer isn't usually asked by contractors to 'give them a second chance' as has been insinuated here either.

Yes, it's awful for them. Honestly, It's not that I do not have sympathy for them. However, The thing they are protesting about is basically that a private company is using non-British workers. If that is the message we send out then a lot more people will be unemployed. If it were simply a matter of legality and nothing else then we would all be demanding the law is changed, but if you start dictating the nationality of the workers they can employ then companies will be less inclined to set up here, leading to less jobs.

Do you not think total might be questioning the wisdom of having to do business in Britian at the moment? They may not be able to shut down existing locations but they will dam well think twice about setting up more.

We need businesses here, they provide jobs, and in these isolated examples those jobs did not go to our workers. However a lot still do, and these companies pay tax, and they benefit us.

Can you imagine what would happen, if we went over to France and pinched all there work, you would have a general strike, as they stand up for the rights, this is precisely, what the British lads are doing.

We have to protect jobs, for the sakes of the families, there will be more and more people being laid off becuase of this, don't forget major companies make money out of us, but they are using foriegn workers to produce it, BRITISH JOBS FOR BRITISH WORKERS.

i have no idea how you arrived at that being as the plant is in Lincolnshire which is a county in the East of England and a french workforce would have had the same response as the italians.
i'm advocating British jobs for British workers and the jobs are in Britain not Brittany .
