Re: teacher jailed !!!!!!
Actually, thinking more about it, an air gun/pistol can be classified as a firearm if it's used to commit a crime, so I was completely wrong about it possibly being modified (at least more than likely wrong). the sentence apparently can range from three months to life, so I'd say she got off very lightly.

Re: teacher jailed !!!!!!
I have been a victim of several crimes but, funnily enough, never had the urge to run out with a firearm. Of course I don't own a firearm either.

Re: teacher jailed !!!!!!
From today's Manchester Evening News.
"POLICE have received hate mail over jailed schoolteacher Linda Walker. Officers have been sent dozens of emails and letters, as well as taking phone calls from all over the country, from people angered over how police handled the investigation. Police considered taking action over some of the letters, but abandoned the idea. Chief Supt Andy Holt told of the hate mail as he went public to try to correct "misinformation" about the incident, which ended with a judge jailing the 48-year-old mother-of-three for six months. She will serve three months in Styal prison. Mrs Walker was found guilty by a jury of affray and possession of a firearm after firing an air gun near her home in Urmston on August 14 last year. Mrs Walker blamed local youths for making her life a misery, and her family say they made 15 calls to the police which they say were ignored. Police say they can only find three incidents in that year which were reported to them. They concerned a break-in at Walker's garden shed, minor damage to a car and malicious phone calls to the Walker household. Chief Supt Holt said: "There have been a lot of letters, written on the basis of misinformation and inaccuracy. "What I have tried to do is correct those inaccuracies. "People think we have not arrested people who damaged her car. There was no damage to her car. There's no evidence that the people Mrs Walker confronted were in any way responsible. If there are other examples of where the family has contacted the police I want to hear about them. "Even if people had damaged her car, it can never be a proportionate response to take a loaded firearm out onto the streets. Is it okay to go out armed and confront the first people you come across, even if you have no proof they were responsible for discarding litter in your garden? "While I accept she was frustrated, her actions were not proportionate. It could have been anybody's children out on the street." Chief Supt Holt also tackled suggestions that youths were running amok on the streets of Urmston. He said: "It's a residential area and people have high expectations of public service. When things aren't being delivered, they are vocal and write to the police, and I accept that. But I assure you things in Urmston are not out of control." Det Sgt Frank Hayley, who investigated the case, said: " I would like people to judge us on the facts, not supposition, and also to judge us on the actions we are taking in the Urmston area." |
Re: teacher jailed !!!!!!
I think the problem is that when criminal are caught commiting crimes they are not dealt with harshly enough.
There is also no consistency in the sentences handed out and no common sense underpinning them. If I go round to my neighbour and kill him with a shotgun, I am jailed for life ( well 15 years at least). If I run him over "accidentally", I get five years for manslaughter and with good behaviour I am out in two and half years. We need to get police into schools more and start tackling crimes and criminals at the source i.e. the home. Many teachers could probably tell you those children in their class who would end up as criminals. Unfortunately, all the agencies involved today pussyfoot round the issue politically correctly. We need to build more prisons, rationalise sentencing, get more police on the streets and remove persistent offenders from society for good. If we did that maybe law-abiding citizens would not have to break the law in order to live a crime & nuisance free life. |
