I strongly doubt whether doing something to ensure all workers receive pay for bank holidays is any kind of crypto communist plot! Indeed we were warned of disaster from the Tories when the minimum wage was brought in: there has not been and nor will there be any great disaster in the economy from such measures.

I do agree small businesses are important and perhaps could be assisted more.

Well, just to clarify I don't think that this new BH entititlement is part of a communist plot, but the "sod companies" attitude around here, the whole companies-eat-babies and general anti-corporate movement and ethos which is so popular.

I used to be low paid. I used to work six and for a while seven days a week. Did I ask for a handout? No, I got on with it and worked hard, so I could get a better job. Nowadays I still work hard, still work days that most people don't, but I earn a bit more.

Too many people in this country want something for nothing, free this, that, and everything else, and their backsides wiping too. And this government are to blame for giving them everything.

I may be old-fashioned, but I believe in a fair wage for an honest day's work. And if you want something, earn it.

The low paid are not asking for any handouts, they are being given what the majority of the working population have already got.

I see. So because some have it, everyone should? Unfortunately, life's not like that. Otherwise we would all have company cars, pensions, expense accounts, private health care (or does that fit in with your "ideals"?), share options (or should the "workers" own the company anyway) etc. After all, lots of people have those benefits, so why can't everyone? The answer is that people EARN those things, and they know in advance that they are part of the remuneration package, before they take the job.

I repeat, if you don't like the rewards for the job you are doing, find another job.

They are low paid, they deserve their holidays. Simple as that.

The small business I used to work for got 30k just to relocate, within the same borough, from the premises the boss's pension fund owned to another building he was buying (I won't mention the Beamer and TT!). Small business gets plenty of help and likes to moan plenty. If life that's hard for them they can always get a low wage job with no BH entitlement.

I worked hard, continue to work hard, and don't get paid BHs as such, but that does not stop me agreeing that others, and in particular the low paid, should get them as a right.

You might find it easy others don't, particularly in the low wage economy where rights can be scarce. Your attitude, if I may speak almost frankly, whiffs a little! It's not a sin to show a bit of compassion and a sense of justice you know :)

EDIT: Your post reminded me a little of that Monty Python Yorkshiremen sketch; "I worked, hard, six, seven, eight days a week, with only one clog between us...... You had a clog, you were lucky...." ;)

Companies seem to be doing very nicely thank you very much. Shame they keep coming out with the begging bowl for grants, tax breaks, allowances etc Scrounging sods!

Fine, so some companies do well. So what? And why is it justice? Giving people something that they were originally aware thaat they would not be entitled to?

If people want a helping hand, get on a government training scheme and get a better job.

I wouldn't pay you extra for Bank Holidays either.

Don't be looking for time off to sleep.... and put your hand up when you want to go to the loo. ;)

Might be better off sewing footballs in Indonesia than taking a job with me283! :)

Actually, I would accept small businesses may well have problems, small businesses are a vital part of the economy, I would doubt though the effects would be that serious and usually such businesses just adjust their prices to recoup losses.

:erm:

Yes, I was suprised they were open.

I couldn't actually tell you if they were selling fish or not, I cannot remember them being open on a bank holiday before though.

A small business adjusting prices to recoup losses makes them more unattractive to the consumer than the big companies they are already up against.

As someone else mentioned, self employed and people who run their own businesses are human. Some self employed sole trader types cannot even afford to take any annual holidays. I have a friend running his own business, and he hasn't been on holidays for at least 15 years, he does manage to get away quite a few weekends in the summer but was always the last to turn up late on a friday night at our camping trips.

I just think some people think all business people are making money hand over fist, and taking advantage of their employees. that is not always the case, some businesses are struggling to make ends meet, whilst they continue to struggle they are often keeping people employed.

I`m not denying that some small business`s are struggling but is it too much to ask, for a decent wage, conditions and normal holiday entitlements the majority have. This is 2005 not the dark ages.

As for the comment about contracts, I think it was made by a teacher? How on earth can someone who gets such a huge amount of holiday anyway be in a strong position to judge here?! (Apologies if that is in error).

Mr. Bliar is clearly looking for votes. Not a tough one to figure out. But I maintain my stance: when you accept a job, you accept the hours, days, conditions and rates that go with it. If all is not to your liking, don't sign up. If it is so very bad, nobody else will take the job.

As a point of interest, I notice that many posts here claim that having to take Bank Holidays out of your annual leave (let's say 20 days) is a huge hardship; strange, but I have worked with many ex-pat Americans whose annual entitlement is only 10 days, even whilst in the UK. And yet you think that we in the UK are Draconian?!

Just because I'm a teacher doen't mean I can't stand up for those in poorly paid, low status jobs...or are us teachers all supposed to be card carrying Tories? My grandfather worked for over 30 years for his union and I'm rightly proud of his achievements in defending the downtrodden workers during his time as local branch secretary...

Your problem is that you are so anti-Blair you can't see straight.Well I've no time for Blair(too damned tory like for me) but I do have time for this suggestion...

As for that cr@p about not accepting poor conditions...if you turn down too many jobs you can find your benefits being cut....and so many employers know this fact.

I'm definitely going to have to unsubscribe before I say what I really THINK....
