if I try and upgrade online it tells me i'm on the 4mb service already but i am not according to the speed tests.
I am happy to wait for now but they can't advertise a 4mb service for long before people will start wanting it.

yea, we had some Lo-FLO taps fitted by the council the other month, its soooo sloooooow to fill up the sink now, still theres a water shortage so thats that i guess.

im in manchester were it always rains, and it has too :)
no shortage of water here.

for faster electricity, your going to need high grade copper wire installing, and for superfast electricity, your looking at a super cooled gas refridgeration unit encasing the copper wire :)

that will get you faster................ Zoooooooommm

Or get back on topic :erm:

lol - anyway. Looks like there are a lot of bored people waiting for this upgrade. Not quite sure how your boredom will be cured but I hear that getting this upgrade before other people makes you cooler than them and harder and will get you more friends and women (or men) and.......

Oh forget it!

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I'm not entirely sure if I'm due an upgrade or not. All these upgrades companies have been doing in recent years, this dash for speed, it's all a bit ruddy silly quite honestly.

When I left ntl I downgraded from 3mb to 2mb as I lost staff discount, and although the speed did change as it shows up in online speed tests, the actual difference to my browsing experience was - nil!

Therefore if goes back to 4mb the difference will still be nil.

There is just no point to it all...I pay £24.99 for 2mb, it's good value, it never lets me down and frankly I'd rather they didn't mess with it to be honest. I'd rather leave it as it is. They can keep their 4mb. I worry that this constant messing with things will eventually screw something up and break it.

That doesn't really work as many areas get this done without getting speed upgrades every week. This is just standard network maintenance and upgrade I'm afraid.

Although if you're lucky they'll be doing the switchovers, however just because network optimisation / upgrades are being done it certainly doesn't mean that it's the tier uplift coming :)

Same here, NG17 area, except I've never had my connection go wonky after midnight for as long as I can remember. Must have been some routine maintenance affecting speeds.

I don't believe it, but if you want to be sure call disconnections and tell them you're off to ADSL/Sky unless they give you a separate modem. I had no end of trouble with my STB, and after a LOT of complaining they gave me separate modem... then I cancelled TV and got Sky anyway ;)

Smells like Horse Manure! If you have a Pace STB the Maximum you can receive is 1MBit, but assuming you have a Samsung or better you can receive at least 5-6MBit as has been proven.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

We've just downgraded from the 10mb to 2mb/4mb, having seen the new 4mb tier on NTL's website.

Since the 10mb "upgrade" we've only ever got between 1mb - 4mb, usually towards the bottom end of that. I figured we might as well pay for 4mb and get 1-4mb than pay for 10mb and get 1-4mb.

The impression we got from the person on the end of the 'phone is that we aren't the first customer to do this today. I think it's going to be a popular pastime now.

Frankly, though, if they would have changed our STB to one that would allow us to get the 10mb we were paying for, we wouldn't have downgraded. So by putting us off with the £50 fee that would have been required to upgrade the box, they're now going to lose £120 per year. Would it not have made more sense to upgrade the boxes for free, then they would have kept that £120 per year?

What kind of business sacrifices long-term gain for short-term fleecing of the customer? Still, when NTL changed the Pace boxes to Samsung ones (to handle 3mb) that couldn't handle the 10mb that was clearly just around the corner, it demonstrated all-too-plainly their incredible lack of forward thinking. Barmy.

That remark is the best description of how NTL is being run at present I have seen. Would be interesting to see if they do have any future business plans long term one or is this now going to be the norm jumping from one month to the next and hope to stay one jump in front of bankruptcy.

No, it was at the end of last year I think when we received a letter from NTL saying something to the effect that the 3mb was being upgraded to 10mb but because we had a Samsung box it could only handle 5mb.

If we wanted to upgrade the box we could pay an extra £50 to do so. Given that it had only been a couple of months since they replaced our Pace with the Samsung in order to get the 3mb, and a complete farce the "Engineer" made of that, we decided not to bother.

I can't tell you how tiny that letter made you feel. It effectively said "we're giving everyone an upgrade to 10mb, except you - because you've gotta pay extra". I know that wasn't what they meant to say, but that's how it came across. As a loyal customer (we get BB, phone, and TV from NTL) paying top-whack for BB (£37.99 at the time, £34.99 since), the "gives us fifty quid" letter felt like being kicked in the gut.

i must admit that having a sumsung i wonder how ours will cope with 4 MB.. when i max out the connection even this box runs slow and that's on 2 MB so dread to think what 4 MB will be like

Things have improved dramatically here today.
Downloading ISO's from my usual site today are averaging 1224 kB/s, normally it's 1024 kB/s, browsing is also much faster.
I just hope they leave things well alone now. :dmonk:

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Well I am mighty relieved that the new speeds have arrived. I was on the 10 meg connection and never got above 3.5 meg speed apart from the first few days when 10meg was introduced.

Several calls to NTL only ever ended with them trying to blame my equipment - sigh.

At least now with paying for 4 meg I am getting closer to the speeds they are managing to deliver to me. But suddenly £25 per month sounds a heck of a lot compared to the ADSL offers out there at the minute.

Shame I had to switch down speeds rather than NTL manage to give me anything like what they offer though :(

Seems I jumped the gun as well :( despite them saying they had changed me down to the 4 meg service, it is actually 2 meg I am getting at the moment. Ugh, wish they would have warned me it hadn't changed in my area yet, as I would have stuck out 10 meg a little longer. ah well.

....yes for us exisiting customers, that's fine...But what about new customers?

On ntl's site, they are advertising 4mb (up to...) but if ntl can't provide 4mb to new customers. Aren't they going to land themselves in hot water legally? For existing customers it doesn't matter, as we're getting a "free" upgrade from the 2mb service. But if you're a new customer and sign a contract for a 4mb service today and ntl can't actually provide 4mb or "up to" it, then that's a diffrent matter, isn't it?

Im sorry but im finding all of this rather amusing.'RARARARAAAA wheres my upgrade!?' lol some of you sound like proper loonies!

'upto 4mb' means just that! Your connection will run anywere 'upto' 4mb, and obviously anywhere in between.

The way some of you are ranting on I wouldnt suprise me if NTL turned around and told y'all to sod off and stay on 2mb! .. not that it would happen, but still.

Most of us have had our fair share of problems with NTL at some point or another (to those who havent, ok fair do's, your lucky!) but that doesnt mean we have to turn around now and kick up a right old stink just because the upgrades haven't happened bang on the stroke of midnight June 1st.

When we downgraded they did tell us this. Basically the woman said that we'd be dropped to the 2mb package to be upgraded to 4mb when it comes. That's fine with me because the difference between 2mb and what I was getting is much less than the difference between 10mb and what I was getting. Saving £120 per year is worth the difference between the differences. ;)

I remember noticing a speed difference when going from 1mb to 3mb but there was hardly any difference, other than a less-reliable service, when going from 3mb to 10mb.

I simply don't get this line of thinking at all. By your own definition, it means NTL could sell it at "up to 50 meg" and just not provide that to anybody. But that's ok, because even if I get 512k, that's "up to 50 meg" right?

chrisjones 02-06-2006 17:38

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

haha - lifes a b1tch aint it! Its simply how these companies do thier business. Ask some of the 10mb customers about thier 'upto 10mb' service.

You bet your life that once a 50mb connection (or similar) is around it will most probably be an 'upto 50mb' service - but since its not available then im sorry, thats a daft thing to come back with.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I take it that nobody has actually been upgraded yet?
This thread has given me a few chuckles at the impatience of some folks!
Like the change from 512 to 600, then up to 750 etc.... it will arrive when it arrives.
It's costing nothing, so just be a bit more patient, and it will happen when NTL are ready to make it happen.

by definition 'upto' means it can reach that figure at some point - so if you advertise it at that and no customers ever got 50meg and it was impossible to get it then you'd be falsely advertising.
