hello,

rang up three times yesterday to get upgraded and they feed me different stories each time. one lady said i have to wait 24 hrs because i only just signed up from 2 meg-3meg so i did. rang back today and had someone say my modem isnt compatible(i know it is from infomation off here).

it seems its the luck of the draw who you get answering the phone the other end.

re my post last Saturday regarding 10MB upgrade (12/11/2005) broadband technical support stated to me that the samsung stb was not capable of sustaining 10MB only between 5-8MB.
Alternative they suggested was to have a modem which would be installed on 22/11/2005, received a letter from ntl this morning (16/11/200) confirming the appointment and giving me my pin number.
I did read somewhere that i shouldn't let the broadband set-up CD-ROM anywhere near the computer, any idear why not?.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Up until Monday I was on the 3Mb /30 GB package. Unfortunately or fortunately as it turned out I did have reason to contact NTL CS with regard to a real problem. Whilst talking to the CS representative I decided to ask when 10Mb would be available. He told me that it was available in my area now (Northampton) and asked if I would like to be swapped over to the higher speed on the understanding that the speed could fluctuate and that I might experience connection dropouts until the beginning of December. He also told me that included in the 10Mb package change was a new 75 GB usage cap. I of course accepted his offer and he pushed the button.

I immediately remote connected to my PC at home form work and checked my speed by downloading a large MS service pack. The speed stayed pretty solid at 1.1Mb during the download which I thought was amazing. I then uploaded a file from home to work at a speed of around 59 Kb, Brilliant.

Having read some of the experiences on this forum over the last few days I was absolutely amazed at the friendly no problem attitude of the CS rep. The speed at which the upgrade activated (less than a minute) and the pretty much rock solid performance of my connection so far

I did mention my good fortune to a colleague and fellow NTL 3Mb subscriber 10 minutes after I had been upgraded. He called NTL immediately and simply asked if the higher speed was available where he lives (Coventry) and was told that it was. Although a different CS rep to the one I had spoken to, my colleague experienced the same friendly attitude and was switched over to the new package.

We both have NTL 250 modems and neither of us had to re-boot in order to see the increased speed

My sympathies to those who are having problems but in my particular experience and that of my colleague I would like to say well done NTL!!

you dont need to install any software in order for your pc to operate with the cable modem.

Baiting peple isn't very grown up, there was no need for you to state such a thing, certainly not in the way you did it, knowing that someone will pick up on and it restate why they are complaining etc. :td:

You'll probably find that people tend to post in a way that (normally) mirrors the original post - you know, spout rubbish and get rubbish spouted back...

Seems to depend which area you are in and who you talk to, I talked to a Scottish woman and she gave no hassle at all, I asked for the upgrade and she just said okay I'll do that for you, then told me to reboot my modem after I did that I was on the new speed.

Just thought I'd try phoning CS again to see if they could upgrade me from 3mb, and got told that I couldn't have the upgrade because my modem can't take it (NTL 120), but during december i will recieve a new modem and the upgrade!! A bit different to what I have been told previously but I'm in no rush, so I will wait patiently til I get my new modem and then hopefully I can enjoy what a lot of other people are enjoying now.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I have just upgraded this evening, I have the terayon TJ210 modem. I was on 3mbit and I used to get 300k/sec (ish) download speed. Since 'upgrading' this evening, I now get a superb 30k/sec to this same website and nowhere near even 3mbit speeds maximum let alone 10mbit!

I would advise people NOT to upgrade! when I was enquiring about the upgrade, CS told me that I cannot moan about the speed because its still in testing and not official, they also told me that they will not be contacting me about the speed upgrade as I have already done it and that performance all depends on your modem and location. I can only enquire about poor performance once it has officially gone live.

not happy one bit so far I have to say!

Just read the post in the modem thread, that suggests the new firmware is being rolled out to the 120 modem. Rebooted modem just now and speed has gone up to:

Downstream 9465 Kbps (1,183.1 KB/sec) 10222 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 495 Kbps (61.9 KB/sec) 534 Kbps (inc. overheads)

and the modem has the new firmware, so I guess everyone on the 120 should try and reboot their modem.

Have to cancel the 250 upgrade when NTL call me :) Congrats to NTL on sorting this out in a timely manner! Just rebooted my modem here in Belfast, and i'm now getting a steady 5.5mb, with a max speed of about 7mb.
I'm not sure if the firmware was upgraded, i might twiddle about with my ethernet settings later, see if i can improve on it. I'm using forced 10mb full duplex at the moment.

Last night ntl deployed new firmware for all Ambit and Motorola modems in preparation for the 10Mbit roll out. These modems should have all been rebooted overnight to apply the new firmware immediately.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

It should the downloaded the new configuration file named

ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr

to your modem therefore reconfiguring it to run at 10Mb when NTL update everyone to that speed as before this update the ntl:120 modem were incapable of running at 10Mb

The modem should have rebooted automatically after the new firmware was installed or if you want to be sure you could manually reboot it yourself

How can Netguard Affect internet speeds! That's weird.

Confirm the firmware upgrade for SB4100. Just rebooted mine and it is now downloading merrily at a consistent 1.2MB/s ADSL speedguide also confirms full 10Mb down speeds.

In the nicest possible way....... in your face to the people who swore blind the SB4100 wouldnt do it even after I posted the official specs. ;)

Very happy bunny here now........ :)

Quite easily, its examining network traffic going in and out and using up CPU cycles, if the Computer (or the software) isn't up to analysing 10MBit of data every second then it will cause a bottleneck.

Since my firmware upgrade my modem has rebooted itself five times now
Hope there's not a bug in the upgrade :bigcry:

Thank you Ian, its good to hear the 10mb service and the SB4100 work ok. Im going to reboot mine to see if I get the firmware, and maybe the service upgrade at the same time.

Cheers

Where do you get the firmware upgrade for SB4100 and what is it's number? Anyone on 2Mb/s get upgraded to 10Mb/s yet in the Grimsby area?

Ian-Highlander 17-11-2005 12:43

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I'd already upgraded to the 10Mb service but was only getting about 5.5Mb until I rebooted my modem this morning. I'm guessing you only get the new firmware if you've upgraded, not sure.

The details in my SB4100 modems help screen are now:

Software Version: SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH
Hardware Version: 0
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.3

The software version is completely different to what it was.

Hope this helps.

The firmware upgrade will be sent to your modem by ntl. Don't think 2mb users are being upgraded till next year, unless they upgrade to the 3mb / 10mb service

Nice to see ADSLGuide news have chosen to ignore the fact that ntl are now offering 10mb yet have added a 10mb option since the ntl upgrades have started and probably have been swamped with more speedtests then usual.

People are upgrading via the site/phone to receive the upgrade rather then just getting it.

Anyone else find it a disgrace that new customers get the 10mb and the loyal customers get **** all? Yeh, it's upgrading itself on the 1st of December (apparently) but myself, being with NTL for a few years now have to wait for the upgrade. Plus, it's only available to new customers because its a way of attracting more customers and more money for NTL. So, having existing loyal customers on 10mb won't attract more custom? Yeh right. Naff off you *****!

I tried to upgrade my 3MB connection yesterday - was well happy when after waiting for some time in the queue I was told that the 10MB service wasn't available yet and it would be about 6 weeks before it would be. I could have sworn that some others in Grimsby had said they were already on it but I guess Customer Support know best.:dunce:

Is it worth ringing back to see if someone who can actually help answers the phone?

Or maybe I should downgrade to 2MB so I can then upgrade to 10MB.

huh??? if your on 3mb and 10mb is available to anyone in your area then you will have it too. If your on less than 3mb you have to wait, after all your not paying the premium price

I'm on 3mb but obviously only new customers get it. I've been with NTL a few year and will have to wait with the rest of the loyal customers for 10mb broadband. 1mb and 2mb are getting done next year and 3mb next month. (Apart from new customers wanting 3mb of course)

Yeah thats what I did ;) Forget about what CS says, the 10mb configs are on the system and using the upgrade page it will upgrade you whether some rep say its ready or not.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I dunno how many times I have said this stopped getting annoyed that you can't get the 10MB straight away. NTL are going to be giving you a huge speed increase at no extra cost, just be patient and wait for it.

I can imagine you all getting it now and then moaning cause you were getting a good speed or the connection wasn't very stable, wait for them to give it to you to make sure its all working properly.

Incorrect, I was on 3meg, and was upgraded to 10Meg, and I have been a customer since April 2003 :-)

Thought I'd make a contribution as I wouldnt have got 10mb without this forum:

Go to this link and you can choose from several different test links, all work. Have fun Everyone.

http://performance.toast.net/

P.s Upload speed also works, just make sure you dont upload a confidential file, I know it sounds stupid, but we all get tired and click on the wrong files to send sometimes.

done that early this morning, lunchtime and this afternoon, no joy - my account showes 10meg, i'm on 3meg still and no firmware upgrade=total disaster.

Cannot go back to 3meg (although i'm still on it) as system don't show 3meg anymore, went back to 2meg cos was going to do it manual through NTL upgrade site, nothing has happened all day to even try (still on 3meg and not 2meg), so put back on 10meg late this afternoon but config file showing 3meg settings.

try explaining that over the phone!
