Honestly - I'd like to say I expect better from NTL - but having been with them since 2000 I know this idiocy is about par for the course.

They are upping the cap from 30GB to 75GB cant see many people complaining about having the cap more than doubled!! :)

I have been reading all these posts, and notice that nobody has answered the one question which interests me. Has anyone upgraded there line on a STB? I have the new samsung STB installed (about 6 months ago) and am sure this will be supported.

Also it is interesting to note that it is upto 10MB, which means if u have a 5MB connection you prob cant complain at all, as they are not commited to 10MB excatly.

If they can upgrade my 2mb line straight away to 10mb but charge me £37.99, then i am sure they could upgrade me to my 10mb limit for what it would have been on 2mb?

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Speed's good, but not max'ing 1MB for me yet. About that fastest i can get is 500k down, and 40k up. Tried different sites, microsoft uk etc. This is from Oxford.

Im putting it down to busyness at the moment, or the fact the network upgrades may not be complete. Guy at tech support said the auto roll outs wernt being done because the network was still being upgraded and optimised.. so based on what im seeing at the moment i kind of believe him

Still a nice jump for free though. If it gets faster over the coming weeks, all the better.

To bo honest, if they say no - leave it 5 minutes and call back. I know this could be frowned upon here - but ive found in the past that sometimes you can just get somone who is reading from a script - and somone that's willing to help and knows the system.

That person can generally sort you out in a couple of minutes. Just luck of the draw ;)

Tried to inform the CS guy that folk were being upgraded as we speak and he told me that he would be putting a 'monitor' on my account to make sure I didn't do the same thing.

So basically they want to ignore all the customers they have in the mad chase for new customers. Wheres the logic? A bird in the hand....

well i phoned up CS, eventually got through to a nice scottish lady (one was mentioned earlier) and equired about going up 10 mb from my 3mb line. She went off for a bit, then came back, and seemed to be saying she couldn't do that, then she said, ok, that's done for, just reboot your modem and pc and it should be done.
woohoo i thought, but deep down i knew it was too good to be true, and i am, in fact, still on 3mb.

I am on 3Mbit. I rung NTL CS and asked to be downgraded to 2Mbit. They did this. I confirmed I was on 2Mbit via the ADSLguide Speed Test. I then rung NTL CS and asked to be upgraded to the top tier. They said that is 3Mbit. I asked if 10Mbit was available and was told it wasn't. I was put back to 3Mbit and have just checked the ADSLguide Speed Test page again; it's 3Mbit and not 10Mbit. All this took about 30 minutes. I am in Southern Hampshire and have a seperate cable modem.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Hi Guys,

Just found you all again, must be 3 years since I last visited here (I seem to only hunt you down when i have a complaint :()

Just upgraded from 1Mb to 10Mb and only getting 3Mb, I did not know about the 10Mb upgrade, I just followed the speed upgrade link from http://www.ntlworld.com (it looks like a total fiasco) and when I rang support to ask why they are advertising a 10mb upgrade and I'm only getting 3Mb they said the 10Mb upgrade is for new customers only, I asked why this is not displayed on the upgrade page (this they could not explain)

I will be speaking to Coventry Trading Standards and will supply a report in what I did to reach the advertised upgrade pages and provide screen shots because I think NTL may be breaking the law by advertising a service on their upgrade page and charging a fee of £37.00 for 10Mb when the actual user is not going to get that service at this time, CS say that existing 3Mb customers might be upgraded to 10Mb either the end of 2005 or early 2006, I asked again why these type of details are not displayed on the upgrade page as their upgrade page is misleading visitors into thinking that they are getting a choice between a 2Mb or 10Mb connection that displays a substantial difference in speed between 2Mb and 10Mb pricing so most will opt for the 10Mb yet they are not getting what they believe they are paying for, the fact that a end user is now on a 3Mb service (for how ever long it takes to upgrade existing users to 10Mb) is irrelevant, NTL are advertising a service on their upgrade page that they can not or choose not to supply existing users (yet they are willing to take the payment for it) their answer was they can only tell me what they have been told.

I have already spoken to the ASA but they don't think it falls under their control as the service is not publicly available (ie to get to the upgrade page you have to log in with your account details) they have suggested to speak with the local TSO as NTL do seem to be providing details that may be breaching trading standards regulations.

They closed at 16:30 so I'll call them in the morning and let you know what they have to say.

Not wanting to side with NTL on this - in fact I never want to side with NTL on anything - but the upgrade page says - up to 10 meg not 10 meg. They'll get away with it on the basis of that I imagine....

Just a warning to those using a 3com CMX...

I called CS and got upgraded to 10meg, no hassle, no questions, it was done and the cablemodem reset itself while the lady was still on the phone. The problem is it just kept on resetting. After an hour of rebooting the modem and broadband faults doing line tests (which were all fine) I asked to be downgraded back to 3meg. This was the only way to get back online.

So, it appears the ye olde 3com CMX doesn't like the 10meg config file. Luckily I have an engineer coming tomorrow with a new modem, which impressed me as I thought I'd have to wait a week or two. :)

A.

This is a real pain in the ass. CS said Sales are only allowed to do it. They put me through and said only CS can change the speed, but you can have 10mbit. On the phone now, sales lady wants to talk to CS directly to sort it out.

Has anyone been upgraded directly from 3mb - 10mb? If so, what phone number did you use? I really can't be bothered with the hassle of going down to 2mb, then back up again, it's a recipe for disaster knowing ntl's history of billing problems!

yep, 3 to 10mb through CS, on 0800 052 2000 then option 2. Thing is, you gotta pray you get through to someone who will happily upgrade you,

Good luck!

3Mb is less than a 3rd of the advertised speed, no court in the land would find that as an acceptable level of service ;) NTL would have a hard time convincing anyone that because they state "upto whatever speed" gives them a free hand in limiting quality of service a customer is paying for (the "upto" provides them a safe buffer zone, it does not allow them to Charge for 10Mb then only provide 3Mb)

It would be like you paying for a train ride from Coventry to Scotland, then getting kicked out at Manchester because the train company decided thats as far as they were going today, they might get away with it for one trip, but they would never get away with it on every trip :D

Just been on the phone for 22 minutes.

Spoke to CS who said could not be done and transfered me to sales.
Sales said it could be done, but CS needed to do it - transfered me back to CS
CS(2) knew nothing about if, but got a manager (they do exist!) to talk to sales, who passed on the information to them.

End result - I am to be upgraded within the next 24 hours.

I am in Guildford area, presently on 3 mbit.

system
surfboard modem 4100
linksys befsr41 ver2 router
Cisco 24 port managed switch

The surfboard has a 10/100 nic built in. But the wan port on my router is 10 meg only. Were as the LAN are 10/100 just been on to phone to linksys and reply was that these routers have only a 10meg wan but the wrtg54 variants have a 10/100 wan port
hope this help any one with this type of router and thinks they are not getting full speed im just getting a little over 5 meg
the surboard moned has leds on the nic and the 100 led not lit but if plug in to my switch ( i know it wont work just a test ) the 100 led comes one

A few months down the line we will all be 10mb customers,
by natural upgrade or by phoning customer services et al.

By then we will be purchasing 'bandwidth' from ntl rather than speed
by the service price differences.

This is very difficult for the customer to measure (networked computers, voip etc) and does not seem to be tangible as a purchased product.

This may create issues for ntl in charging people for things they can not easily 'see'.

Please don't flame me either, i believe this to be morally right, you do what you have to do, and i will deal with it my way.

Its plainly clear not many people in this thread are capable of apreciating what it takes to roll out a product like this on this scale.

Billing systems need adjusting for new customers and for existing and the service needs deploying from the headends per area. This is/was never going to happen over night for the entire country.

Yes we are seeing it start and possibly ntl could have put out a communication to every customer but can you just think what would happen if they did email everyone.

3) They've made no effort to communicate their plans to their customers. This IS important - because customers could be basing their choice to stay with NTL based on the future promise of these speeds.

4) It would appear they've also made no effort to keep employees infomed.

5) The end result of the above is customers being provided with incorrect information by NTL (yet again). Might i remind the NTL defenders that we've been in this position before over previous upgrades and they don't appear to have learned the basic lessons. Communication with customers is essential.

I have no problem with all the people on here bitching about upgrades not happening....for the simple fact that NTL could have prevented the bitching if they'd chosen to communicate properly.

1.yes they did but never gave any timescales.

2.Randomly? how do you come to that conclusion? I really would like to know what you base that on. Trial area are picked for their suitability for monitoring and for the types of hardware present.

3. No comment, its all un-official at present and not in a state for a press releases so thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s no press release, its not rocket science.

4. Really?, every employee gets given a email or memo stating what they are and are not allowed to say, badgering some might get rumours.

5. Remind me all you like, but its never going to change the way this type of product is rolled out because thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the way it has to be done. When you have a Qualification in risk management, configuration management, change control or any of the other IT management qual then you may be in the position to criticise them.

Also they should have maybe said the first tier to get the upgrades with be tier 3. That way they would have covered themselves because thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s always a hand full that can't comprehend whatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s happening.

Systems like this roll out in three or more stages.

1. Reboot (catches modems that are rebooted)

2. Overnight (catches all modems that are on standby overnight and reboots them)

3. Forced (force reboots the modem as and when it can)

This order might not be right though and its based on what they have done in the past so may not be whatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s happening now.

Of course if you go and do the job your self and migrate to tier three you get it straight away.

Its done like this to minimise impact to the network/cs centres.

are you getting 5 meg on the speed test:
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

or just when you download, chances are you won't get a solid 10mb everytime you download. Remember the upgrade is for up to 10mb.

Not really is tis not the same as the telephone service.

Pay £25 per month and get so much usage allowance included and then anything over your charged per call.

Or in this case pay £37.99 per month with 75gb included and pay extra for what you go over by.

I can't see any difference in the 2 models and should work much better.

After all your calls dont go slower because your on a lower tarrif wy should your bb?

Forgive me if I sound sarcastic - BUT.

From 1993 to 2001 I worked for Vodafone, where I was involved in a number of significant product launches that dwarf anything NTL is attempting in these upgrades.

OUR product rollout and upgrade plans included - amongst other things:
  • Detailed plans of communications to customers. These usually included a 'this is coming' communication, followed by a 'this is here communication'.
  • Full communication to staff - which as a matter of interest included emails to all staff sent days, if not weeks before the rollout - rather than hastily constructed emails chucked out on the day the first customers could get access to the service.
  • Carefully chosen triallists - who were communcated with. I'm under the impression from comments in the old thread that triallists were unaware of the upgrade til it happened. Hardly the way to run a trial that could theoretically bugger up someones connection.
I don't need risk management, IT, change management or other qualifications to know how the communications aspect of a rollout needs to be managed. Perhaps one of the big problems with NTL is that its run by IT geeks who don't have the first clue how to handle customers.

Perhaps that's why Vodafone managed to grow from nothing to 150 million customers worldwide - and NTL managed to end up filing chapter 11 in a similar time frame.
