Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

The channels are showing up on the web TV guide now (552 -554).

https://virgintvgo.virginmedia.com/en/tv-guide.html

No sign of any SD versions that BT have, & nothing yet on the V6 boxes.

They are now on the V6 on 552-554.

Channels are meant to have a 7-day test period on Sky and nothing has yet appeared.

Checked the channel scans on all the euro satellites & no sign of these channels being uplinked. In fact the only mention of them elsewhere is on UPC cable in Poland & Ziggo in the Netherlands, which I assume will be line-fed as VM is. Probably a case of Sky wanting too much money to carry these channels for this short period. I remember the BBC not putting a Red Button HD channel on Sky a while ago for the same reason.

SKY have confirmed on social media they will not be carrying the additional Eurosport channels. Being greeted by a murmur of discontent.

Not very nice of them failing to put their subscribers first. Glad to see that Virgin and BT have a different mindset.

I'd say you have a point if it was the Olympics I'm Not sure there is the same interest in the Winter Olympics in the UK.

I'm not that into sport at all, but I will be watching some of the winter olympics. I think this event will get quite a lot of interest, actually.

That may well be true, but those who do wish to watch will feel agrieved. Sky cannot afford to upset customers, as has been discussed at length on here.
Bit of a PR fail for me.

I doubt interest is that high , I couldn't tell you anyone who's competing for us.:D

As I say if this was to happen in the Olympics now that would be a different story.

Clearly the spat between Discovery and Sky hasn't helped Sky viewers here.

Don't get me wrong I watch the odd daytime event on the BBC from the Winter Olympics I'm just saying I don't think there is the viewing numbers the Summer Olympics gets with more UK competitors involved.

I actually think from Discoverys point of view it's a good move , now imagine could they catch some Premier League rights great for bartering with.

Agreed the Winter Games are not as popular as the summer games, but never the less, bad PR for SKY.

Sky are used to throwing there weight about perhaps they have met there match. The Eurosport brand has been steadily growing since the 90's and now has real muscle behind it, so it will be interesting to see where they take it in the future.

I think Virgin should resist until the HD version is offered. PQ on standard definition, at least when I viewed it, was abysmal.

The sour grapes response would be to say "Well due to the time delay most of the live events run from midnight to roughly midday. I'm going to be too busy either sleeping or at work to waste my time watching adults messing about in the cold. Glad SKY didn't waste money on this. Shows an element of quality control. the resolution on freeview is 544x576i h264 at around 1.6Mbps for a wrestling show I recorded. I think football is around 1.9Mbps. Virgin media don't just broadcast the same feed, they take the raw uncompressed feeds then encode them themselves in whatever resolution and bitrates they wish so image quality wouldn't be a problem on virgin media.

If they launch a HD channel on freeview it wouldn't surprise me if they went HD-only as you already need Freeview HD to receive their dvb-t2 h264+he-aac sd channel so why pay for 2 freeview slots instead of 1.

Most HD channels yes. One of the reasons we have the additional Eurosport pop-up channels & Sky don't. The majority of the other feeds are Satellite fed (Astra 28.2E) & there is also the capability to pick up Freeview DTT signals from the Crystal Palace transmitter in London should it be needed.

To confirm something that was discussed on here earlier. I just received an email from VM offering a free upgrade from Tivo to V6.

---------- Post added at 10:33 ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 ----------

Interestingly when I signed up for the upgrade I'm offered a quick start self install, so I have to set it up myself. I guess they give me instructions on how to return or dispose of the Tivo.

I can still choose to have an engineer do it but at a cost of £40. So I guess this is how they are able to offer them for free now.

Although Eurosport 3, 4 and 5 are only available on V6 and TiVo boxes for Full House customers in HD, those on lower packs can watch them in SD on the Virgin TV Go app. Odd that the SD versions are not on V6 and TiVo boxes then!

Because while they still have the rights to Irish Racing until the end of 2018 they will need to replace those considerable lost rights with replacement content thus one suspects that is the main reason why it has been pushed back till early next year before they launch Sky Sports Racing..

  1. Unplug your tivo from the coax, but leave it powered on
  2. Call the activation line

  4. Simples

It should last a couple of weeks before the old Tivo box dies. You can't access the old recordings via the V6 over a network, as VM remove the Tivo box from your account and the V6 will only connect to other devices on your network that are part of your account (bit stingy there VM, but oh well). You have to just use another HDMI connection for the old Tivo whilst you watch recordings.

The self-install box has a leaflet in saying you dont need to return the old box you are replacing, so theoretically you can keep it running like this until it decides it's giving up trying to connect and commits harri-kari.

I've just seen this article, could be a sign of things to come

"Virgin Media has struck its first deal with a US streaming service, partnering with Amazon to co-fund a $40m-plus (£29m) sci-fi series from a writer of the hit show The Walking Dead.

The 10-part series, called The Feed, is set in London in the near future, although filming is expected to take place in Manchester. It is based on a book by the first time author Nick Clark Windo."

Be interesting to see if this goes down well, will Virgin invest in more things like this?

No worries, UC, it can be difficult to keep up with everything going on!

Yes, I think we can expect more original content for VM. Don't expect a Virgin channel or anything like that, but think on demand and streaming services. That's where most if not all of our new content will come from.

You may have read that the ITV Encore channel, which is exclusive to Sky, is closing down in favour of a new on demand channel, which will be available on Virgin later this year. That is a sign of things to come, although it does appear that Sky Atlantic will finally arrive on our EPGs this year.

Hopefully, Amazon too will grace our Tivos and V6s soon!

You can't be getting many HD channels then as these are no longer broadcast in MPEG2. Only the SD channels are still MPEG2.

With Virgin/Amazon seemingly having a good relationship, I guess we are a lot closer than to having this arrive soon. Would be pretty cool.

Just a shame the HDR feature isn't yet enabled on the V6, because I'd still use the TV to access Netflix and Amazon for 4K HDR content...fingers crossed that an update is coming soon.

Don't shoot the messenger! The number of traditional channels will start reducing soon enough. Sky Atlantic will probably be the last of the goodish ones we will get in the future, methinks!

Nope.

But if we was Virgin we would put VIVA information screen on Channel 318 for two weeks, and put MTV LOVE (MTV OMG) on Channel 317. That all.

But this is Virgin we are talking about.

Well, many people who read this thread are looking out for more and more channels. Someone has to say it like it is, because this is not where most of our new content will be coming from in the future.

That's not what I said. What I was saying was that there won't be many more conventional channels coming soon. Eventually, it will be streaming and on demand services only.

Just to update (as I said I would). my V6 and new hub (not expecting a new hub) arrived - both installed with ease in about 30 minutes. Have to say really like it, so fast especially the on demand stuff. Only negative was losing all my series links, that took an age to redo (the ones I could find) especially having to create do a wishlists for ones I could not find.

A bit late now, but are you aware of the ability to copy them over? Or does it not work for you?

It appears I should have had two service guides sent with mine but neither were in the package I got. All I got was the installation guide.

Anyway thanks to this forum all my links are now copied over :)

So back on topic,

Any update on the possibility of Eurosport & Discovery 4K?

Has it recognised any Series Links that you had manually input, or have they been duplicated?

Hopefully you won't get any unnecessary duplicate recordings.

I believe that these channels can be viewed in UHD in some other countries. I am hoping that we will get them later this year, but that's a hope, not a forecast.

Same sources say Sky Atlantic HD may launch in 2019*.

*But till we start seeing tests being reported this is still subject to change.

But talking of Sky we was watching Sky News last night and we saw BBC News on in the background.

There's no reason why this shouldn't happen. I'm surprised they've not done this already. Incredible to think that the techies were telling the world that Sky were not as up to speed with their Sky Q box as Virgin with their V6, and yet they've beaten Virgin to the post yet again.

Virgin Media really needs to move a bit quicker and give Sky a run for their money.

Virgin are introducing HDR compatibility for Netflix on its boxes aren’t they

I’m pretty sure the Sky HDR will be for it’s Sports broadcasts I’d imagine although I expect it will be introduced for On Demand as well at some stage.
