Well, it would make sense as to why this anomaly exists ;)

I wonder if we'll still have to wait until carriage agreements expire before new channels are normally added?

I don't think it should but it may depend on the importance of the channel. Certainly, for BT Sport Europe, VM didn't wait until the original contract expired.

It look to us as Virgin Media UK will carry both as Virgin Media UK broadcast:

-Al Jazeera in English and Arabic
-France 24 in English and French

Well instead of the foreign news channel or additional shopping channels, why don't virgin media ask what the customers want

The problem with that is we all want different things! For example, some want prices pegged as low as possible while others want more channels at any cost. Plus, you have content providers like Sky who dictate terms.

My view is that VM should continue to strive to provide the best possible choice at the best possible price, but also provide us with the means to watch content from as many of the missing channels as possible (eg through Amazon and Now TV). That way, VM subscribers can choose to pay for additional content without impacting on those who are not interested.

Yes, I know we can do this anyway by other means, but it would prefer to be able to access through one box, not a multitude of boxes and streaming sticks, which all cost extra and are less convenient.

All valid points mate the only one is now tv, it's not fair that like for customers to watch Sky Atlantic they need to fork out for now tv, but based on the last sky offer, tell us what the impact on customers would be

Is it right that if you have a Smart LG tv, you can access Now TV for £6.99 a month? That will give you access to Sky Atlantic and other XL TV channels on VM. This is cheaper than Netflix.

NDVT is in Hindi and NDTV 24x7 English, so presumably both can exist on the platform.

If it's got the Now TV app on it then yes. But the channels are in SD only and XL has many, many more channels.
The basic version of Netflix is £5.99 a month so still cheaper than Now TV but you can get deals on Now TV to make it cheaper than £5.99 a month.

That is correct but not all channels from XL are on now tv, you can't record anything so it's a choice, you can get a six month pass for £24.99

So people can keep their XL and pay £6.99 - I didn't think that was too bad. Does that have Sky Box Sets and Movies or do you need separate passes for that?

I borrow a family member's Sky GO and that is in HD, I'm surprised Now TV is only SD.

I think Netlifx has just gone up, mine is now £7.49 for HD 2 screens.

Please note that the channels highlighted leave the Entertainment Pass on 21 June. The two Nickleodeon channels join a new Now TV Kids Pass (£2.99 pm) whilst Disney goes to its own DisneyLife streaming service (£9.99 pm).

Prices of both services here. The basic version of Netflix is £5.99pm. This is for one device and is SD. A separate pass is required for Sky Movies. You can get a 14-day free trial to see what the boxsets are.

"Currently, Virgin Media has adopted TiVo in the United Kingdom, which he described as an “interim plan” or “medium range plan”. In Ireland, where Virgin Media acquired the former UPC business, Horizon is already being deployed."

The Now TV entertainment pass includes the boxsets. You can also get Movies and Entertainment passes, for 6 months for £49.99. So that's around £8 per month for all of sky movies and the entertainment.

http://www.nowtv.com/entertainment#ib-section-section-5

With regards to quality only live TV is SD apart from the sports channels. All the on demand stuff (movies, Box Sets, Catchup) is in 720p:

http://help.nowtv.com/article/Streaming-Quality

I think £8 per month is incredible value for the movies alone but with the entertainment thrown in it's something that may well convince people to ditch their current pay tv package.

One final advantage is that if you are an extremely keen Game of Thrones fan you can watch the latest episode from 2am each Monday.

That's usually the Sky business model- get people hooked on a free or cheap service and then start bringing in extra charges.

I wonder if the kids channels will be replaced by any other channels??

Never seen GOT as it doesn't appeal to me, but something on TV the other day intrigued me.

What sort of food do they eat on GOT? This programme said that sales of this particular food had massively increased since being shown on GOT

Apparently, they've taken a lease on an ITV owned SDN slot on Freeview.

I'm pretty confident that this will make it onto Freesat.

I fear that with regards to VM it will be a no if the recent launches of FTA channels are anything to go by.

I dropped XL TV two months ago, and just stream from NOW TV, for me it's the best move, i saved a small fortune, i get all the TV i want at a fraction of the cost. Picking up passes on ebay saves even more. I've never looked back.

Most interesting. Thanks for highlighting that here.

I've never really considered NOW TV due to the limited choice of entertainment channels. But if you add in movies and check on ebay, as I have just done, the price can certainly get more attractive.

We first reporting that new QVC Channels was set to launch on March 8th 2016.

We was told the following by Virgin Media UK Sources:

Quote:

We have been told tonight by Virgin Media UK Sources that up to three new QVC like Channels are set to launch on Virgin Media UK in the next few months.

We still to be given an launch date for both QVC Beauty and QVC Style.

QVC Extra is not testing on Virgin Media UK.

I'd guess the sellers would get bad reputation points if they did do that, so it'd be the case of sticking to sellers with high ratings.

I've been universally unhappy with VM tv for a long time and this thread is a good reflection as to why that is, ie VM tv is stagnant for the high cost of it. Even with a new tivo coming, if you can't watch the best shows like Game of Thrones, what's the point?

Anyway, back to Coming Soon and the "joys" of such delights as Indian news channels, more QVC channels and a NASA app.....

It's a shame a site like that can't combine with other tv related sites like this one to create a real powerhouse, commercial-less tv site. I loath with a passion the site that Digital Spy has become.... :sniper:

Don't get too hyper, old chap!

How often are you likely to watch these channels if and when they are added?÷

Everyone needs to get a grip.

Now, Sky Atlantic would be something to write home about!

Will we get it? Fat chance, the way we're going. There really needs to be a fundamental reassessment of the packages offered by VM that puts us in a better position against Sky.

The only significant channel missing from Sky, is Atlantic, and that's been the case for the last five years.

Sky grabbed Showtime recently. Why didn't VM previously do a deal on that? You can't blame Sky for making deals whilst the pay TV opposition is showing no interest in content. Amazon and Netflix have taken the rights to other quality shows, on a show by show basis, or with smaller distributors.

Quite frankly, the situation as it currently is, works very well for me, giving me quality shows via Now TV, Prime and Netflix, coupled with a minimal Pay TV sub.

VM may have missed the boat for obtaining a significant amount of quality content.

.... they can still do deals as and when current ones expire. But I think the next battleground will be between Netflix/Amazon and establised pay tv companies such as HBO and Sky.

I was just reading an older article from 2011 stating that Netflix may well bid for some first run film rights when the current deals with Sky are up for renewal.. Netflix's boss wants to poach new film rights from one or two Hollywood studios and sees Sky as his biggest competition in the UK.

Good points. But since that 2011 article, Sky has renewed all its contracts with the Hollywood studios so that threat has yet to prove itself. Sky's content threats seem to be from BT on sports rights and content providers like Disney setting up their own streaming services.

You might be onto something with Lifetime

"The identity of the channel remains under wraps until the summer, though in Turkey A+E has launched its Lifetime brand – already in the UK – as a free-to-air service."

I'm interested in the reasoning behind this rather than the channel itself.

I can't see VM going to the trouble of adding a channel to the cable system without some sort of contractual agreement in place.

Perhaps the technical standards didn't meet with VM expectations??

But more seriously - after a couple of years of austerity, I think that VM's channel buyer has been given the keys back to his/her cheque book and things are really looking up on both VoD and channels.

lol, I don't think that channel will be in HD on any platform for a long, long time. Not my cup of tea, but I know some forum members like Arthurgray will appreciate this channel whilst others will appreciate having HD for the sport on S4C.

Have you ever worked in a customer service environment? I worked for O2 when the I phone was been released, we were briefed on the handset but we're not able to say anything about it. So I think that the person that you spoke to may have been spinning a yarn.

As others have said, the prices won't be confirmed until much nearer the release date. The market could change a bit over the next few months and besides, VM don't want to give away more pricing info that will only benefit their competitors.

So who do you think should be last to know?

Customer Services haven't been briefed on the new box yet. There is no reason why they should be - they don't need to sell or support it yet. So anything they tell you should be taken with a large bucket of salt.

The Leaks Department. :) Seriously, some are people connecting up their DTC TVs and seeing "coming soon announcements" or "channel testing announcements" which VM equipment hides from its subscribers.

Although you often say this, Andrew, the only stuff you should take seriously is what Virgin actually tell us. When they tell us, that is!

It is interesting to read the various theories and snippets of acquired information on here, but you really shouldn't take them as gospel.

A lot of it turns out to be inaccurate or just plain wrong, although the people who post the news may have the best of intentions.

The trouble is that you cannot always trust what VM tell you either.

My most recent examples are that they first said that I could have a free 1TB TiVo, then the order turned out to be for a 500GB. Upon telling them it was to be a 1TB or nothing, they went to the trouble of waiting until the member of staff returned to work and said that they might listen to the phone call recording.

It was eventually sorted out, but I didn't care for the insinuation that I was a liar.

They said that I could keep my V+ box, then decided they wanted it back via a mildly offensive text message.

When I called them, they said that they wanted the second TiVo box back!?!?

I asked if I was being charged for a second box, to which I was told "no, as you haven't used it".

I then asked why on Earth I would order and VM supply me a 2nd box to use as an ornament ie it didn't exist.

She then said "it must be for the V+ then". I was repeatedly told that the only option was to take it to a Post Office, to which I stated that if they didn't pick it up, they would not be getting their equipment back.

An arrangement was then made to pick it up.

VM have really been pushing their luck with me this past year or so after nearly two decades of custom.

In short, don't believe anything that VM tell you either!

I understand that Virgin don't make money from the Sky Sports channels - they pass on to the customer only what Sky charges Virgin.

So I don't know why this change has occurred - it can't benefit Virgin - at least I wouldn't have thought so.

Does anyone out there know the background behind this move?

Sky may have built it into the carriage contract??

Re: S4C HD.

Apparently, according to S4C themselves, only their Euro 2016 matches will be available in HD on Virgin Media.

Sky and Freesat will get the full service, which starts on 7/6/16.

How on earth did S4C and Virgin arrive at that?!

The press release actually says "The Euro 2016 matches only will be shown in HD on Virgin."

It doesn't read too well and could be read as:
"The Euro 2016 matches are only being showing in HD on Virgin" or

Yes, speculation based on events that were happening at the time.

Everything is speculation until it actually happens.

The press release actually says "The Euro 2016 matches only will be shown in HD on Virgin."

It doesn't read too well and could be read as:
"The Euro 2016 matches are only being showing in HD on Virgin" or
"Only the Euro 2016 matches will be shown in HD on Virgin."

S4C makes a return to HD broadcasting in time for Euro 2016
Friday, May 20, 2016 Channels , News

Welsh broadcaster S4C is making a return to high definition broadcasting in June in time to offer HD coverage of Wales playing at Euro 2016 in France.

S4C HD will launch on satellite on Tuesday 7th June, and will be available on Sky and Freesat following several weeks of test transmissions. The HD channel will take the slot of the current standard definition service for viewers with HD receivers. S4C HD will be available across the UK: On Sky and Freesat 104 in Wales and Sky 134 / Freesat 120 outside of Wales.

NOT ON FREEVIEW
At the present time, there is only one Freeview HD multiplex covering all of Wales, and there is insufficient space available to fit S4C HD without forcing another channel to be removed or without any timesharing arrangement. Some spare capacity on the multiplex looks set to be utilised for extra BBC Red Button coverage of the main summer sports and music events, including the Olympics.

VIRGIN MEDIA
On Virgin Media, only the Euro 2016 matches from S4C will be available in HD. The remaining S4C HD schedule will not be available.
