On Sky, you get all the channels out there. With VM, they are just taking us, the customers for mugs.

They di it last year, by saying BT Sport was Free, strange the price went up, for package.

Why do VM take us for mugs.

i totaly agree with you on this one i have been with vm for many years until last year had 4 boxes etc, due to September price rise and recent one also lack of channels etc we decided to cut down to one box and been looking at joining sky also like someone mentioned to me today its all good vm doing a new tivo box but wheres the missing channels ! defo be my last year with vm

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Virgin media`s tv services really are poor in comparison to Sky`s. What cable users could really do with is for Virgin Media to sell it`s tv side of the business to someone who cares and will invest serious money into it. All Virgin Media really care about is their broadband and speed increases which as others have pointed out already most don`t want or need.

For me, I find the VM TV service very good. It is only missing Atlantic and a few HD variants. The HD channels may be sorted in the next round of contract negotiations...fingers crossed :-)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Might as well spread the butter even thinner.....When will broadcasters get it?

Rather than spreading an ever diminishing amount of shows over a larger pool of channels. Do the opposite. Just have one really strong channel along with the usual +1, HD and catch up options.

What's on Sky 2 or Sky Bravo or whatever the hell they'll call it next, that's not already on other channels?

More channels does not mean more choice. Quite often it means less choice, as the same or similar shows are spread across multiple channels. Search for NCIS, or CSI as good examples....

I think that Sky have now realised that the number of people who are able or prepared to subscribe to Pay TV services has now plateaued.

They have recently shown more interest in their FTA portfolio, with five Sky channels now on Freesat and extra funding for Pick.

They said that there was a good business case for utilising old Pay TV material to those who won't have seen it before and this makes the channel extremely cheap to run, so even a modest amount of ad revenue can make such a channel profitable.

Channels like TruTV, Your TV, Quest etc are similar business models; which are also handy to flog the Pay TV side of things. These channels are deliberately branded differently to their parent channels by their owners, so as not to appear to diminish the quality of their subscription channels or upset customers who feel that they are paying for programming that others get for free (eventually).

Sky said that there was more to come and I'm wondering if Sky Bravo (or whatever it ends up being called) will be a FTA offering?

If it does and the Sky branding is included in the channel name, this could indicate that it will be properly funded. Bravo is synonymous with vintage programmes to many, so maybe that fits in too. Just a thought...

In my recollection, Bravo was synonymous with 'Lads TV' reality rubbish, such as 'Dog the Bounty Hunter' with a very small proportion of decent drama such as 'Alias'.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Yes it did morph into a 'laddish' channel.

Originally, it had a strap line of 'Timewarp TV' and showed lots of vintage television shows, many in black & white. It was a cable only channel and owned by United Artists.

It ran from midday to midnight and this is how it opened each morning:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ML3ys1a2Azc

I actually loved this opening sequence so much that I tried to recreate it with this particular disco light to recreate the effect :D

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=88qd24eTa9w

The old and often monochrome progamming was believed to be putting off viewers so the direction of the channel was changed into what you remember, before being closed down by Sky.

Was that reality TV? I'd always assumed it was crappy animal drama along the lines of 'Champion the Wonder Horse' and 'Skippy the Bush Kangaroo'. Just goes to show you shouldn't judge a programme by its title :)

Sky Q has arrived
http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/09/sky-q-uk-launch/

The basic box costs £42 per month and can record three shows simultaneously in 1080p -- you can watch a fourth one live -- on a 1TB hard drive.
The Sky Q Silver box, meanwhile, is 4K ready and can capture up to four shows at once onto a 2TB drive, with the option to watch a fifth channel live. It costs £54 per month and supports up to four Sky Q Mini boxes, which cost £99 each, for multi-room viewing.

Will this push VM into releasing anything on their own new box?

I disagree to a point.

The TiVo system (Software) is great. The hardware is now out of date. Get a new box, with a faster processor, more memory and maybe an extra knobs on to combat Sky Q and things will be fine. Aside from maybe not procuring shiny new spec boxes from TiVo fast enough, I think they've done well with the system.

I disagree completely.

Who, with any sense, would compare five year old hardware with brand new hardware?

Who's five year old PC is as fast as a brand new one?

Why would Sky bring out a new channel that shows repeats of Sky 1 shows? Doesn't make sense to me. Throw in a few reality shows and people will watch :-) haha

I thought that's what Sky Go, Sky Box Sets and "On Demand" was for...so you could watch what you want, when you want?

SKY 1 Will Probabbly Keep Arrow and The Flash on there channel.

I think they should give Pick a new name or rebrand back to Sky 3 if they can't think of a new name.

Apart from Bravo there was another channel that shared the slot with bravo on NTL BACK in The 90's and that channel was called Trouble which aired shows for teens in the day and bravo only aired at night.

As i understand it this was very much on the cards a few years back, Sky were trying to use it to get Virgin to stump up the asking price for Sky Atlantic. Virgin still said no and talk of Sky Bravo was dropped.

Would certainly fit the programe profile mentioned in the survey I completed. They did specifically mention the channel would be home of the super hero shows. Whether that's repeats or first showings I don't know. I forgot to mention Star Trek.

When it started (on cable only) in 1985, it showed a lot of old ITC shows. I think it went onto satellite in 1993.

I don't understand how launching Sky Bravo (or not) would have influenced VM's decision on whether to pay the asking price for Sky Atlantic

I think the reasoning was this, which I seem to recall came from a Grauniad (Guardian) article.

Sky were interested in starting another basic pay TV channel but needed the add revenue from not only Sky, but VM customers as well, so VM would need to add it to their Sky basics package.

In return (and this may have come from someone who thinks adding 1 plus 1 equals 3) Sky would do a deal to let VM have Atlantic.

The whole thing sounds like a fairy tale and probably was.

I know that i will never have to fulfill the promise though as BRAVO is not returning, it'll be something like SKYMIX that will replace sky2.

To be honest I can`t understand why they need to re-brand it anyway? I watch any channel if it is showing a program of interest to me regardless of it`s name.

Our Virgin UK Sources will not give us the go-ahead to post what we know about the new TiVo box.

What I mean if virgin media should have made a deal with the owners of the stations to include the plus one channels if we get the main channel. I know the plus one channels can be very useful if you got a lot of programmes to watch or record.
That's why I think the plus one channels should be include with the main station. Not. separated on it own.

Seems like an odd thing to worry about. We could implement expiration dates on your recordings now if we wanted. But we don't.

You are far more likely to lose local recordings due to hard drive or STB failure.

Agreed but then the decision with regards to cloud recordings isn't yours to make being that you don't hold the rights to any of the content. There's a reason cloud recording hasn't been more widely deployed and that's rights issues just look at the mess VM has made with multiroom streaming , it's a lottery on which channels you can and can't stream.

I would have thought the new box would mirror Sky Q's box in terms of hard drive and 4K. Not sure how many tuners VM will go with.

That's no different to the situation now. If the content owner made us expire your recordings, we would - just like we prevent access to Sky recordings when you unsubscribe, because that's a condition imposed by Sky.

It increasingly seems like the cloud PVR's time will have already passed by the time the technology actually gets deployed with so much now available on-demand.

The trouble with on demand is that the programmes are taken off again too quickly and you lose track of what you want to see.

I think that each on demand service should have a section for the programmes you select to see and remember where you are in the programme or series, with a clear 'watch by' date. The absence of this facility explains why I need a 1TB box for my recordings!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

It's the truly intelligent TV that does episode management, personal scheduling and recommendation across on-demand and live services that is the missing piece at the moment. But as I mentioned before there are so many obstacles that make it really hard for that to be realised. Which annoys me as it's a project I'd love to run.

Having recently used the Demand5 App's OnDemand for the first time, I was pleased to find 5*'s X-Files Essential Collection programmes were showing in HD - I hope that's true of the new service, too. It's a shame the TiVo versions don't hang around for long - my Sony TV's version of the App keeps them for a month rather than a week.

Looks much better and now option to register which i hope will be like all4 where you can add shows to a favourite list.

Just taken a look via my tablet. I can't get it to work, clicking on the image of the programme does nothing. Am I doing something wrong?

London Live may be on a knife edge as it's owner has announced that he is to stop printing the Independent titles.

Both companies are currently making losses; even rich people can't subsidise loss making companies forever.

Can't find the exact quote right now but Levedev has said he is committed to the station and it hopes to break even by 2017.

Really can't see the appeal of it other than as a Channel 4 +20 years for people who only have Freeview. Pity Channel One never lasted as that was much better in doing what it was supposed to do.

So do i assume i dont have any reason to come to this forum, other than to interact with you handsome people, for some time...

does anyone know who has the rights to old x files episodes? it was on history 2 (ridiculous) for a year or so. They only had the rights to season 1. they suddenly started showing season 2 episodes but have suddenly stopped once channel 5 showed the new episode.

Has everything reverted to channel 5 or history 2 have to stop showing episodes until channel 5 have done the new season?

id love a website which shows who has the rights to certain shows and for how long. especially for sport rights

You're absolutely right. The only thing I have recently used CF for is to get some company from some fab people like yourselves. Especially as VM are not predicting any new channel launches.

Was a bit too terse in what I wrote. I meant that the people I've come across who watch the channel only have basic Freeview through an aerial and do so for the old C4 programmes. Those on other platforms or with streaming services have access to All4 or other services licensing C4 archive content so it gives them less reason to watch.

Either way, the idea that it's in some way a community station is laughable.
