Wierd that C4 aren't pushing these HD channels more. On Freeview they are only available if you can get the COM 7 mux, & they are not available on Satellite. Makes me wonder how these channels pay for themselves. They would be a simple addition to cable, as like with ITV Be HD, the channels could be line fed to VM.

I can believe the aren't on freesat but like you say it wouldn't be any big deal for VM to pipe them direct.

2016 eh! so it can't be a silly channel as no one would be giving inside information over a silly +1 channel or something that far in advance. me thinks atlantic.

i know you can't comment ;)

It's not hard to understand, actually it's quite easy to understand, but SA gives people the opportunity to discuss things on here.

SA is (probably) the last high profile channel that VM need to add to their current TV line up (excluding +1s and HD versions of channels we already have). If we had SA, what else would there be to talk about ? ( This is rhetorical :td:)

This forum allows people to discuss their views about it, without the need to be told that we'll never get it....and to be honest, it's boring now.

I actually like the talk about if we will get it or when MB says he has a DNP, the forum picks up and gets lively again.... Sky need VM as much as VM need Sky...SA will eventually land on VM, it's just the question of when? Could be 1month from now, or could be 10years from now...but to discuss it with everyone is what brings us all here.

jobbie8 23-01-2015 14:31

I'm looking forward to Fortitude on SA. I have NowTV.
I believe I have read that Fortitude will be shown in all off Sky Europe's countries and the US the same day, is SA available in Europe? If it is, what's the big deal if VM got it?

No it's Virgin won't pay the money Sky are asking, i think both are the problem.
Virgin seem to want things on the cheap and Sky want to charge silly prices for a channel, both need their heads banging together.

Too many are quick to blame Sky but ask yourselves why is trutv on all platforms now except for vm?
I think vm are a huge part of the issue for channels not launching. This ofcourse is just my opinion.

This year you can look forward to more international channels as VM want to branch out more to their Asian customers etc, also expect huge changes in their on demand services.
I'm also under a do not disclose order at mo but something very exciting is in the pipeline for you guys that's all i'm allowed to say.

When the VM engineer came to install my V+ some years ago, he said he was surprised that I had both Sky and VM. I explained that I had fallen out with Sky, but had kept the box to avail myself of the FTA channels and as an emergency back up should the VM network ever go down (has happened just the once).

He said that the only places he'd ever seen both in a set up was in asian households. He explained that the pay channels on VM were better value for them (VM have a special package for asian customers), but that they needed satellite to access FTA channels or for pay boquets not available on VM. VM have a special package for asian customers.

As I say this was several years ago, so I don't know if the situation has changed or not. If VM are improving their asian packages, they may be able to get this community to cut out Sky/satellite altogether. It just goes to show that, whilst on their own, minority channels may not seem to make VM any money, they do help when the bigger picture is looked at.

Very true. I'm surprised that VM have passively sat back and allowed Sky to erode one of their USP's in such a way.

Agreed. IIRC Sky want something like 23p per week per subscriber for SA, basic channeks usually get a matter of 1 to 3 pence. This figure sounds like nothing to obtain SA, but that 20 to 22 pence premium adds up to a significant amount out of the channel budget allocation and would set a very bad precedent.

Eh?

I rely on sources more than ever now and you guys to tell me if one of my sources rumoured channels/services did indeed launch as all my tv viewing is all on demand and catch up, it's a bugger when my net goes down though lol which luckily is very very rare with plusnet think i've had 1 outage since i been with them and that was only for 30 minutes.

It closed because it was losing millions of pounds, because very few people wanted to advertise with them, presumably because of low audience figures.

People in the UK generally have a dislike of country music, possibly because of some of the cheesy stuff produced in the 70s, so I guess audience figures were low.

That is a shame because the music they played was New Country, performed by people who grew up listening to 70s Rock music and traditional country, and it was as much AOR as Country; more Eagles - not Tammy Wynette!

Even when New Country was released in the UK when people like Shania Twain had some hits, it was re-mixed for the UK release, to 'de-twang' it, to try to make it less country.

If by bad guys you mean a company who's paid a huge sum to offer its subscribers something they can't get elsewhere something every other company does , I guess its guilty as charged.

The studios don't have to take exclusive money but still do.

One of the reasons I originaly joined County Cable way back in 1993, when CMT Europe was only available via Intelsat with a huge dish, so was basically cable exclusive. The fact was it was always a loss leader. Even when it was launched on Astra & joined the Sky multichannels package, it never made any revenue. Most of the UK Cable companies dropped the service & replaced it with 'The Box' in 1996, diminishing the audience even further. The then owner Westinghouse, finally pulled the plug on CMT Europe on 31 March 1998.

I remember watching the last few hours of it's broadcast on Telewest. I can't remember what the last video was though.

I thought Telewest kept it until it finally closed down in March 1998?

Haha, yup, I am sure your guys could give us a more difficult game.;). After the first half, I thought we would beat them. For some reason, it looked we went for the draw in the second half though. Donaldson was moved into the centre and we lost our best attacking outlet. Blind could not handle him going forward in the first half. Was relieved we held out in the second half though, we sat back and let them put the pressure on us. Even at the end, we still looked we could have nicked a goal. It's the first time I have seen Man Utd play this season, they were nothing special. At least we can go all out and attack at O.T. and know we have nothing to lose. We have already got our wage bill covered for the next year!:). BouncebounceAmberArmy

I did say most. Certainly Bell Cablemedia & Comtel dropped it from their services in 96.

I think Virgin has to axe three MTV Channels for Comedy Central HD to launch. Or MTV Shows, MTV Classic and MTV +1 has poor viewing numbers.

No most do it because they think they can have it all for free, if they can download they obviously have access to internet so why not just get nowtv?

If Now TV had all back seasons available all the time, it would be great. But they don't.

HBO Nordic does and that is the service the rest of the world needs. Fortunately, HBO are going to start providing that, starting in 2015. Let's hope that Sky's deal with HBO until 2020 doesn't screw it up for the UK.

It is interesting that the head of HBO brags about GOT being the most illegally downloaded show.

Biggest load of bullcrap i've ever heard, SKY are not nor never will take over Virgin media. ITV encore is coming this year at some point.
As for Sky atlantic who knows?
Also VM will not or ever will take over sky.
The one you have to watch over the next few years i think is BT and Netflix.

Sky to take over virgin media or virgin media to take over Sky? Sky wouldn't take over virgin media as it'd likely be blocked by government. And virgin media would never be able to afford Sky as its a pan European organisation. I doubt even the British government could afford to buy Sky europe...

At least six 4K/Ultra HD channels to start in 2015 according to this report:

http://www.rapidtvnews.com/201501273...#axzz3Q2l9xTcl

Apparently, operators want to get this off the ground to counter the threat of OTT services.

Wonder if/when VM will get them?

I believe there are three DNPs in the pipeline - theone2k10 has two and MediaBoy has one. Whether that makes two or three in total remains to be seen!

I think you should rank your DNP orders as 'nothing to write home about'; 'average' and 'blow your socks off'.

Then we'd know whether to get excited about it or not and you won't have revealed anything!

It's not the absence of news, is it? It's confirmation of the possibility that there might be news - nothing more, nothing less. And it's not dressed up as anything it isn't, either. From somebody who is still getting excited about a snippet of apparent news from over a year ago, and posting almost as fact what you have extrapolated from it, I think this is more than a little rich!

I'm watching something on syfy hd at the moment and they are heavily trailing shows on Universal. Are they from the same stable? I'm really hoping Universal hd might be one of the dnp's.

No new channels has been confirmed as set to launch for all viewers.

But Bizasia is saying GEO News, GEO Tez and GEO UK all may launch by March 2015 on Virgin Media.

WorldBox is set to add "EuroChannel", "BFM TV", "Ukraine Today" and "CTC" all in early 2015.

Why is it so difficult to go these remaining variant HD channels, are these broadcasters holding out for an unrealistic amount of money to be on VM TV platform?

I assume Virgin have signed multi-year deals with the channel owners which have included the hd variants of their channels at the time the deal was signed, but we'll have to wait for the deals in place to finish and be renegotiated before any hd variants that have popped up in the meantime can be added??

Is that right? Was syfy hd available when Virgin dealt with Universal, but not Universal hd?

Or did they do a deal which included some, but not all, of a channel owner's hd variants?

According to WiKI Universal Channel HD, launched on Sky channel 220 (as the Hallmark Channel HD) on 28 June 2010. I doubt that the VM deal with Universal is that old ,so maybe it was an exclusive with Sky for sometime.

AFAIK, deals are done for an average of three years. If this is the case, the contract for negotiation should be up in June 2016.

Media Boy HQ has seen that Virgin Media has today updated their 'Customer News' page on V and V+ Boxes. But we cant view it at time of posting.

How do I find 'Customer News' on my box?

Looked at the customer news page and all I can see at the bottom of the page it`s got 8 Channel news and 9 Barclays Premier League. It won`t let me go down to it and `click onto it` though

Yeah, a number of people from the Asian communities.

I do agree though, even if we exclude the content from other continents, there is still far too much rubbish on the telly. Perversely though, most of us continue to pay for this rubbish, thus perpetuating the problem. If it was not for the HD channels, I would have cancelled my tv package yonks ago.

DaMac 31-01-2015 06:31

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

We pay for the rubbish to get the good stuff, that's why when iptv is finally flexible enough and technically smooth enough company's like VM will probably not be able to force you to subsidise loss making channels by forcing a package on you with 100 channels you will never even flick through, never mind watch.
