I agree, and that was the largely the point of my comment. It is fairly common knowledge that Smooth Xmas will be returning to DAB, but this is the Coming Soon to Virgin TV thread, not Coming Soon to DAB.

Basically, I was questioning how relevant the information was to this thread.

An new carriage deal.

So you ever know with Virgin Media.

Savings may or may not come from a new carriage deal, that would depend on the actual terms of the deal. You didn't actually specify a new deal, just "savings" which is probably why other posters are asking where these savings would come from. As far as Viacom is concerned, there has been a trend for new channels to replace existing channels on VM. At the moment, there is no evidence to suggest that this trend will change. Time will tell.

Viacom buying Channel 5 and Sony buying CSC does not give VM any savings, VM will just continue paying what it did until the next negotiations. In the longer term, it may even result in extra costs for VM as it will be negotiating with two stronger companies as oppose to four less strong companies.

I cannot believe we are all getting comical over a group of channels. This close to Christmas! However, I could be hypocritical and ask as to what is going on with new channels and whether or not Santa is going to give us VM customers new channels for Christmas!

Exactly why I suggested that MB was wearing his rose coloured spectacles. There's no indication that contracts will be renegotiated early simply because the ownership of certain broadcasters has changed.

Although considering that much of the content isn't what might generally be considered as "premium". Negotiations may lead to some of the channels not been carried on VM.

An early present from Santa in the form of ITVBe +1 and ITVBe HD. It looks like the children have been very naughty this year and are being punished. ;)

I think you're missing the point. Unlike the days of just a few channels, in a multi-channel age not every channel appeals to everyone. For example, as we read earlier, Arthurgray50 is a great fan of the female-oriented film channel TrueMovies2. I wouldn't go near this channel even if I could receive it. But I'm sure there are channels that attract me like the Horror Channel which he probably can't stand. It's not to say one channel is any better than the other, they just appeal to different people.

why are they doing this?? its not like i'm browsing through the tv schedule and see sky sports darts and go "ooo me likes darts i'll watch it now" if i liked darts i'd purposely look for it, the name of the channel doesnt impact that. idiot sky executive who's decided this is a "rad idea" and will "increase our customer reach lol"

and they're on like 80k and i'm a failure in life. its not fair

Then why didn't they choose a much more diverse range of shows to give as examples? Especially when using the phrase, "Mouth watering array of goodies".

Personally I've never heard of any of those shows. And, judging by their titles, I'm not fussed that I haven't.

Seems like VM need to get a PR guy with a more diverse taste. Or, going by that list, just someone over the age of twelve ;)

I think you're mistaking MadMax's post for the real press release; "mouth-watering arrray of goodies" is a fine use of the English language but it's not VM's! :)

The press release up on VM's website also includes some better-known shows "Adding to Virgin Media’s immense library of Box Sets, entire series of Crackanory, Dave Gorman Modern Life is Goodish, Choccywoccydoodah: Starstruck and David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities will join the line-up for customers to watch at their convenience.

With new series and UK premieres of Monty Python’s Best Bits (Gold) and I Survived Evil (Really) just starting, Virgin Media customers will also be able to catch-up within seven days if they miss an episode."
http://about.virginmedia.com/press-r...e-on-virgin-tv

But my main point is there regardless - not every channel is for every viewer and that's the whole point of having so many channels. And I for one have never heard of Choccywoccydoodah!

I have to agree. The press release makes it sound like some must have on demand service. All very well but, if it is such a valuable addition, why has it taken so long to add it?

You have to think about the rights issues. They may have had a contract signed for channel carriage rights but not On demand. Its the same reason that some programmes never appear on catch up or some things don't play on +1 channels(such as movies)

Its very complicated now with so many ways to view content. All bases need covered.

Why doesn't all the directors of VM sit down with the Sky directors for lunch and thrash out a deal for Sky Atlantic.

We always hear from Sky, 'we are always delighted to give our friends at Virgin Media, the best channels out of our portfolio.' Or is it that VM was the cheapest channels possible

Sky won't let VM have Atlantic at any cost. It's full of US rubbish anyway.

I'd rather they got rid of some channels and cut prices.

Arthur, this has been discussed many times now.

Its not about the directors at all.

VM and Sky have met to discuss carrying Atlantic on many occassions. Sky have been unfair in the amount they have been asking and VM aren't willing to pay that. VM will of course have countered offered and submitted their own offers which Sky then refused.

VM wants to carry Atlantic but at a reasonable cost that is fair to its customers.

I bet if Atlantic launched next week most of those who slate it would soon be watching it, i was a big slater of Atlantic until i got Nowtv and discovered some decent stuff on it.

Not just VM. TalkTalk in the UK, UPC in Ireland, WightFibre on the Isle of Wight...none of these companies has yet been able to strike a deal for Sky Atlantic that makes economic sense yet they all carry the other Sky Entertainment channels.

MB Views: Is Virgin Media still in talks with LFC TV?

Is Virgin Media still in talks with Liverpool FC over its new HD Channel?

The "Channel no longer broadcasting" screen has been on air over the past two weeks now and still to be removed from Virgin Channel 544.

The last time Virgin did this was when ESPN was axe for two weeks just for it to reappear as part of the BT Sport deal.

Note: LFCTV was still on Virgin Channel 544 at time of posting.

It will be interesting to see what Sky's strategy is in the future and whether Vodafone's TV offering will offer premium channels like VM or just be a free PVR like EE's offering.

VM have had the option of having the UKTV VOD service since it's inception.

From what I can gather, UKTV have eventually realised that VM weren't going to budge on the (undisclosed) amount that they were willing to pay. In the end, I am assuming that UKTV decided that an offer below what was expected for the service, that provided another income stream, was better than nothing.

Indeed, I was thinking that myself when looking for what had changed on the EPG the other day (turned out that 2x ITVBe slots had been added).

I haven't heard anything since hearing that LFC TV had approached VM to discuss carriage of the HD variant.

I had assumed that the talks had swiftly broken down with no agreement being reached when the SD variant was pulled from VM after Sky had appeared to stick their nose in and announce that the channel would only be available via themselves and an app.

However, soon after this, VM changed their "This channel is no longer available" message to "LFC TV are currently upgrading their service".

It has now been changed back, but it is very unusual for a minor channel to remain on the EPG after closure.

Normally, such a channel is only kept on for a week, presumably to inform customers of the closure and prevent some calls to CS.

The current state of play is that your guess is as good as mine MB, but if I hear anything i'll let everyone know (unlikely as we are all busy with the kead up to Chrustmas) :)

Probably because it took VM a while to weigh up whether the programmes were worth it!

Not very impressed with our on demand selection really. Could do with more good quality stuff on there. Don't think we'll get it though.

They are missing a trick, because if cost is a problem, they could introduce the better programmes that are currently missing in a new premium pack. That means more money for VM.

Its very complicated now with so many ways to view content. All bases need covered.

True, although I do think I read somewhere that VM had decided not to add this because it was not of a good enough quality. I can't remember where I read it - don't think I dreamt it!

VM have most of the channels now that are worth having. Sky Atlantic is an exception, but Sky have priced it out of the market, quite deliberately.

I bet if Atlantic launched next week most of those who slate it would soon be watching it, i was a big slater of Atlantic until i got Nowtv and discovered some decent stuff on it.

Those who really want Atlantic just get Nowtv simples.

A lot of us don't want Now TV. Nor do we want to subscribe to the Sky satellite platform. We want SA on our VM boxes. Doesn't sound too much to ask.

The only chance I see of that happening is if this is part of the deal that brings us additional Sky channels early next year. If it's not in there, I think we've had it for quite some time.

I was told that it was down to the cost and the fact that most of the content was/had been available elsewhere on the platform.

VM tried to offer a pay standalone VOD service when it first started, but the low take up meant that it was eventually put into the XL pack as an incentive for people to upgrade.

Hmmm, could be worth watching.

The channel does seem to be getting off to a slow start. As the planning stage for this channel must have been some time ago, I would have expected them to commission new material at that stage.

I am looking at it from quite a different standpoint. GOLD lost its way quite a while ago. They only show bits of pieces of stuff I like seeing Ab Fab, Bottom etc. The quality programmes of yesteryear though like the Generation Game, Noel's House Party even kids programmes through to Top Of The Pops.
Now a days when I look through they've recently made their own new series of something. I thought GOLD was meant to be about quality old programmes. So what ever they have put OD, I haven't even bothered looking at because I imagine it is the same as their schedule which is crap.

Possibly, but it's not rocket science. They already carried the channels and should have had a reasonably good idea of what would make it onto the on-demand service.

Or adding more chargeable content to the lower packages encouraging more customers to upgrade to the top package.

It does seem crazy that, in order to get these channels, we have to additional services which duplicate much of the content already available from VM.

It would be crazier if Sky's Now TV service just charged you £1.50pm for Sky Atlantic on its own as the whole point of keeping Sky Atlantic exclusive is to make Sky TV's package more attractive than its competitors' packages.

Obviously, for Sky, it's a bonus. They get paid for providing duplicate services. For the consumer, it's not so good. The consumer has to pay extra, to duplicate services they already receive from their existing provider, and has to deal with the clutter of additional boxes.

I certainly wouldn't pay Sky to access services they are basically withholding from other providers. That just encourages them to withhold more.

I did tweet VM and got the reply they were "In talks! same said for MUTV HD

Especially as they used to own 50% of the UKTV channels :D

IIRC the UKTV VOD service was created just before VM sold their stake in the company.

I do know for a fact that both Sky and Virgin Media were offered the service on exactly the same terms- Sky decided to take them up on it and VM didn't for the reasons given earlier.

I am making an assumption that UKTV have now decided to let VM have the service at the price they were willing to pay- a lower income stream than expected from a product is better than not providing it and receiving nothing.

No, it's as intended. The channel was always going to rely on repeats during its first year.

Hopefully, the new stuff will coincide with the end of the exclusivity period with Sky and the channel will be launched on VM at that time.

Because we don't want to pay any more for it, nor do we want to view it on our computers or through additional equipment.

It's only free if you view it unlawfully or through an existing subscription using Unblockus or something like that.

Frankly, I just want to watch these programmes on my TIVO box. I am annoyed that we have to jump through hoops in the way you describe.

I can see your point of view but I have a different view on it. I bought a TV for the bedroom about a year ago with the intention to get an additional STB installed by VM. Due to the package I was on it would have cost me about £11 a month extra to get a V HD box installed in the bedroom.

I therefore looked for alternatives and ended up getting a Roku streaming stick and Now TV. This gives me access to the on demand services of all the main channels I watch along with the added bonus of Sky Atlantic and up until this month, only cost me £4.99 per month compared to the £11.00 it would have been with VM.

So in a strange way, VM actually helped me get Sky Atlantic albeit probably not they way they would have liked!

I know that's what ITV planned, I just find it odd that they introduce a new, supposedly premium, channel and for the first year only show repeats.

Which raises the question, why would Sky fund a period of exclusivity for a channel only showing repeats? We don't know how long the channel will be exclusive to Sky. I suspect that it may extend further, into the period when ITV Encore starts showing original content.

That's not really a different point of view but a different scenario. If you choose to have a Now TV box in another location instead of adding a V HD box you aren't duplicating services at that location. If you can do that and save money and still get the services you require that is all well and good.

I got a NowTV box with 4 months free entertainment pass, just to see what the service was like.
It's in my bedroom on top of one of my 3 Tivos. NowTV offers what I want, Fox, Atlantic, Spotify and it's very fast. Only thing is Netflix is missing.
I am now thinking about dropping at the very least my 3rd Tivo for a streaming box.
Virgin need to speed the Tivo up a lot.

As theone says, the Roku stick has Now TV, Netflix, the terrestrial catch up apps along with a host of other apps you can add through the store. The device itself is a little sluggish to boot up and start shows but once it's going the streaming quality is excellent. I also like that it's discreetly hidden away behind the TV as it just sticks into one of the HDMI ports. It does need a power source though which can be either a normal plug or a USB port if you've got one on your TV. The interface will also be familiar to you as the Now TV box is a stripped down Roku box.

Can't comment on the Amazon Fire TV but would imagine that to have all the same apps - theone can you confirm?

So I guess whilst ever Sky Atlantic & ITV Encore are hopefully 'coming soon' to VM TV then there are plenty of alternatives out there.

Total channels Update:

Over the past two days Virgin Media has remove SIX Channels from Total Channels.

We at Media Boy HQ thinks Virgin has removed the six extra BBC Red Button channels we got this past summer.

I think in first quarter of 2015 you'll see a few channels from smallworlds offerings arrive across the vm network.

Only rumour is Amazon instant video, i don't think Netflix will be free for vm as Netflix are upping their game big time now by producing their own movies they are even going to stream crouching tiger hidden dragon2 the same day as it hits the cinema.

On my list only Bay TV Liverpool is set to launch on this size of Christmas in some Liverpool areas on Virgin Channel 159 from December 4th.

January 2015 is set to see the launch of both Sky News HD and Sky Sports News HQ HD on Virgin Media.

Seen no confirmed info on Sky1 +1 coming any time soon to Virgin Media.

Unless of course a deal can be done to get 'basic' Netflix as a free package with an add-on for the new stuff for an additional cost.

All I would say is keep an eye out for the missing Sky channels coming to VM early in the New Year. We might get more than is expected, but I stress this is only based on previous media speculation and things may have changed.

Virgin Media are known to have approached Amazon about getting Amazon Prime on the Tivo boxes, but the current state of negotiations ..... who knows? I think we may see some significant additions to our streaming services over the next few years, and most of this will be on either a subscription or pay per view basis.

After a year of being suggested here I just cant see it, they invested in their own "roku style" box and no further suggestion they will want to come onto platform providers in the way Netflix has embraced it

Technically it can't happen until 2015 anyway. The Amazon instant Prime video app has only just been added to the US Tivo Roamio, and won't be added to the Tivo Premier (which VM's Tivo is based on) until 2015.

The Amazon Fire TV has been available in the US for a good while now and Amazon still did a deal to add it to a Tivo box.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 4

Amazon is on the use Tivo boxes so should not be too hard to put on the virgin Tivo box. Could be cost virgin paid Netflix maybe they don't want to pay amazon yet

Lol, no, i'm at work :D. I would actually find Pick +1 useful in all seriousness!

How are people enjoying the recent addition of two VM exclusive channels?

In a way Ginxtv is no longer a vm exclusive channel as it's now available on amazonfire tv for £1.49p/m it's the full channel plus loads of on demand stuff which brings me to thinking you guys will start seeing on demand stuff from Ginx in the near future, amazon and vm are the only carriers of Ginxtv though.

I meant ITVBe +1 and ITVBe HD :D

They aren't on any other platform- very odd.

I agree, but it is odd that they aren't on Sky for maximum exposure- especially as Sky and ITV appear to have got back into bed together.
