Sky Sports 5 HD will launch on Virgin Channel 516.

Early 2015
Sky Sports News HD will launch on Virgin Channel 511.
Sky News HD will launch on Virgin Channel TBC.[COLOR="Silver"]

Do you think the news channels would have a little shuffle?

Just thinking about it, It would seem silly to have BBC News on 601, Sky News on 602, Sky News HD on 603 *If it was to be launched here* then BBC News HD on 604.

This would be better IMO:

Sky News - 601
Sky News HD - 602
BBC News - 603
BBC News HD - 604

BBC News should have the better EPG listing. Sky lost the top spot when the Sky Basics were removed and BBC News replaced them. In addition BBC News HD was made available from launch, whilst Sky News HD hasn't. Then there's the quality aspect...

Yes, I too suspect that the channel is being wound down and, therefore, won't be coming to VM.

Very poor decision, but at least I know who made it now....

VM like to keep the x00 channel numbers for barker channels in the various genres.

Sky Sports News HD update.

Base on information I saw on July 3rd Sky Sports News HD is NOT set to launch until next year (Been given date of 'Early 2015').

SPNews - 501 No date for HD yet 2015

saw this on VM Forum

"With so much great content joining our line up. You may have noticed a few channels have moved around.

They’ll take some getting used to so to avoid button bashing there’s a quick update below.

The good news is…

This won’t affect your planned recordings, series links or WishLists – so there’s no need to panic"

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...p/td-p/2390829

They have a list of the channels that have moved, but they are in the most random order ever just to confuse us!!! NOT VERY LOGICAL AT ALL haha

That is the worst list of channel numbering updates ever!! Lol

You do? I don't.

As you agree and as you're saying you're not the guilty party here, all is forgiven. I save my wrath for the true culprit.:)

But I'm not sure where you're coming from when you're talking about replacing SD channels with HD ones. That is not what this is about, we're not talking a HD/SD swap merely having numbered channels on the most logical channel number. Having a channel with 1 in it on channel position 502 is not logical and counterintuitive.

i dont believe they have actually said its coming, it remains speculation but logical after the agreement of missing premium HD to get remaining basic HD outstanding like SSN and SN

Forgive me but I would have thought having a sensible numbering system would outweigh the problems people without HD or SS channels have.

The numbering system we now have in ridiculous. It's not insurmountable as we will all get used to it but it looks and 'feels' stupid.

Indeed so and have said as much. It's a niggle, that's all. I'm sure there's a very good official reason why the numbers had to be so.... I'd love to hear it.

I'm not following you at all here. This is nothing to do with HD, but basic common sense. Do you really think that having Sky Sports News in front on the main sports channels will entice people to subscribe to sports, or entice people to pay an extra £7 for sports in HD? If people want sports and want it in HD, they'll pay for it regardless of the position of Sky Sports News.

Of course having a choice to watch something is far better than not having a choice if the channels are not available. But this is a long running thing with VM and its predecessors...

VM don't seem to understand that having a logical order for channels, aides useabilty and makes the service easier to use. If they did, they might actually get a lot more tv customers, rather than it being flat growth for years and allowing a new competitor like BT to park their tanks on VM's (tv) lawn.

Really do not agree that channel order has any relevance to customer numbers.
BT have come into the market primarily to use sport to gain broadband customers and their chief target remains BSkyB. If not they would never have agreed to let their sport onto the XL pack....

I know, I know... it's premium sports and films that drive subscription numbers, not the order of channels. But I expect that is what may lie behind this numbering decision, though.

VM may think that having the "in the clear" Sky Sports News channel in such a prominent position on the EPG may drive new Sky Sports subscriptions. What other reasons can they have for putting a minority channel right in front of the premium channels?

denphone 15-07-2014 18:34

A lot of customers watch Sky Sports News and Sky advertise their sports channels all the time on there so by putting it at 501 they believe it will attract people to subscribe to the Sky Sports premium channels one suspects.

Traditionally, VM made nothing on the Sky Premium channels and might even have made a loss. They are only there to aid channel parity with (mainly) Sky to try and drive TV customer growth for the channels that do make the company money.

This is why, despite them being made available, VM never used to advertise the Sky premiums.

However, things appear to have changed. VM now advertise the Sky premium channels on their barker channels and VM now participate in the free promotional dates for Sky Sports channels at the same times as Sky customers.

The remaining HD sport channels have been made available to VM and the season ticket is good value. Considering that this is less than what Skys own customers pay (and that VM make nothing on these channels) I am assuming that Sky are subsidising this in some way.

The % of customers on VM who take Sky Sports is much lower than on Skys own platform, so there is a potential for growth to help offset the expected subscriber cancellations. Even if this requires promotional pricing, a discounted subscription is better than nothing. I'm really surprised that VM customers who buy the season ticket aren't tied into another 18-24 contract though.

All this leads me to believe that Sky are now using VM both in their battle against their competitors and to negate the expected loss of subscribers/revenue after the loss of sports rights.

As per my comments above, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Sky had a lot of influence on these new EPG positions (or even made it part of the contractual carriage agreement).

Well i'm assuming VM haven't paid for the mobile streaming rights whereas Sky have for their channels?

Does the BT sport app work over 3g/4g do you know?, i realise Sky/BT own the channels but i'd assume, again, that those rights are included in the PL contract.

Most of of us who questioned the logic (or lack of) regarding the new channel line up prefaced it with thanking VM for getting the channels.

So if I buy the big kahuna bundle with sky movies and sky sports season pass, does that work out a lot cheaper than having the sky movies/sports bundle? You used to get a discount for both, but I presume you have to pay full price for movies with the season pass.

Big kahuna was £60.99 with each additional tivo costing £11.50 on top of that. That's what I was told anyway.

Does the £60.99 include the phone line of £15.99 too?

I'm on the VIP, but looking at the Big Daddy package, I'm not sure it's worth changing. Has anyone else found this too?

I've just posted this on another thread.
It a bit smoke and mirrors this offer.
If you are with VM on the top package you probably won't see any benefit by switching. I don't anyway. It's states £84.21 but without Sky movies or hd or any additional boxes. I have 3 boxes (inc 1 TiVo), Sky Sports and Movies all year round, 152 Mb broadband and talk unlimited extra on my phone and I don't pay a great deal more than this offer.
Yes compared to sky it does make huge savings.
Yes for people who just want to watch the football for the season and want to upgrade to this then it's an ok deal.
It's probably worth a call to retentions.

2 questions:

1) After the 10 month £150 upfront runs out - what price is sky sports per month?
2) Have VM said whether this offer will be repeated every year? or will I then be paying the normal rate again.....so in effect it's just 10 months discounted and no more.

Thanks

Thanks, so if you take up the offer of the discount plus HD, you'll effectively be paying £22 for HD sports for 10 months, then £34 after.

Better than nothing I suppose. I have until September to decide.

No it's channels that drive subscription numbers not just HD ones imo. The channel numbers matter not one jot to me am glad to say.

Doesn't seem so no. I am paying £7 per month for Sky Movies....

I don't see the point in obsessing over the channel numbers myself, it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe the EPG could be split into more sections to make the identification of the channel you want easier (for example, general entertainment, reality, period channels, etc) to break up the lists.

The actual order of channels you can decide for yourself, so frankly I don't know what the fuss is all about. VM would not be able to satisfy everyone in any case, we all have our personal preferences.

I set up a poll to gauge opinion on aligning the VM EPG with that of Sky. Approx 2/3 of respondents said no, with the main reason being that the Sky EPG was a mess itself!

The ability to change the order of the EPG was lost when VM took over from NTL (don't know if this was ever available on Telewest- was it?)

Maybe he was, but then someone posted in a serious argument that they thought Sky News should be before BBC News. I think most of us would agree that BBC News is the best news channel and therefore should be first on the list. On the other hand, others think it is too left wing, object to paying the licence fee, etc, etc. and would never watch it!

This is why it is pointless discussing the order of the TV channels. Just add the ones you want to watch regularly to favourites and you have everything you need in one section of the guide.

I use the favourites function a bit, although as "favourites" and "HD Channels" are very similar on my setup, perhaps it's not worth it.

I noticed Sky 1 had moved yesterday as I got home and hit 122, only for it to be no longer Sky 1 HD. I'll get used to the changes, I was with Sky for a few years (Sorry) until May so had to get used to a massive EPG shift & TiVo anyway.

How are you finding the change over?

I left Sky a few years ago and haven't looked back since ;)

I always seem to use the EPG guide and HD filter when searching channels on TIVO, saves remembering the numbers ;)

I used to be an ntl, then VM customer until 2011 when I moved to an area 50mtrs from cable (So close enough to get mail saying to join VM, far enough away for it to be a no go).

I got used to Sky, but missed VM, especially as their TV service was always excellent. Now I'm back on VM, and using TiVO I must say I enjoy it a lot more. As you say, I haven't looked back either really. The clever stuff TiVo does (& Netflix etc on the box itself) is a godsend.

Edit: Need to update my profile a bit, as it shows 20meg, which back a few years ago was a high tier!

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing it in HD as well. I'll start it in SD, then switch to HD and marvel at the difference. Funny, some things you can't tell much difference between the 2, and yet others like golf and F1 you can see a much sharper picture.

haha just so you can get the full impact...class.

I can normally notice when a channel isn't in HD. If someone in my house is watching a channel in SD that has a HD version, I normally clip them round the ear, grab the remote and change it to the HD channel :D

I don't think it will be too far away if the 4K testing at the world cup was successful.

It will mean anyone who wants to watch 4K will need to have a 4K tele plus a 4K box, which TIVO isnt capable of at the moment.

Sky will probably lead the way though

One quarter final match and the final was shown in 4K at a cinema in London.

As far as I am aware, Sky were the first to create a 3D channel in the UK, so no doubt they will be the first again as you said.

None of the current pay TV STB's are capable.

The new DVB-UHDTV Phase 1 will allow over the air transmission of 3840x2160 resolution at 60Hz with impproved colour depth , the standard uses HEVC compression.

Hmmm, that's been tried before (AOL, at the time a huge internet company, bought TW back in 2000) and that is widely regarded as an absolute disaster.
The only TW channels broadcasting in the UK are CNN, Cartoon Network, Boomerang and TCM. There's no reason to believe that their future carriage on VM would be under any kind of threat even if Fox were to successfully buy TW.

I wouldn't say little substance , however they're current offers been rebuffed.
