No one, I repeat NO ONE can provide a link to the alleged Broadcast Now article which was supposed to be around August / Sept / October. The previous article which didn't say a lot but not the later one. This was free search and also a subs search.

So... do you have it?

The only Broadcast article was the one I linked to dated 27 June 2013. (Broadcast Now is the web address not the publication title). I think the trouble was ambiguous dating wording in a forum post which led some to believe there was another article. There wasn't. I'm pretty sure it was more a cock-up as oppose to conspiracy!

It's no big secret what's in Broadcast's archives. This search shows all articles containing Sky Atlantic and Virgin Media, most recent first. And, yes, it's the 27 June article at the top.

The Broadcast article from 27 June was also linked to and reported in the British Blacklist.

Well the price rises are forthcoming in a couple of weeks and usually Virgin have something up their sleeves to appease customers unhappy at the rises.

That has been an integral part of this thread for a long time now, so a precedent of this kind of thing has been set. I don't have a problem with that and actually like it. You do seem to have a problem unless someone has some information on it being added, with 'provenance' to back up the claim. Therefore, I fail to see how you think we agree.

BTW, are you going to demand 'provenance' for all rumoured channel and functionality additions to VM posted on this thread?

Aww. Over the last two days you've failed to understand my stance despite it being repeated and reinforced over and over again. For instance, despite me telling you otherwise, you keep stating that I don't think SA should be discussed here. Which I do. We really are very close to agreement but for your own reasons, you seem to want to find another reason to argue.

No I'm not going to demand provenance for all rumours posted here, the support I've received indicates there are plenty of others who want to do that.

There is no proof but Virgin track record from the last few years is that they usually launch a few new channels before or just after the price rises.

Yes Andrew - I appreciate your efforts - thank you.

That is the article that we can all find but MB and OB (?) purported to report an updated article confirming more Sky / Virgin talks - an update to the previous one. That article is MIA!

There wasn't a second Broadcast article, spanky, that was a genuine mistake. The wording in MB's post was misinterpreted.

For people who have been members of this forum for a long number of years, this has traditionally been the thread where such things are discussed, and I personally don't see any reason why that should change.

Skip the posts if the ones containing Atlantic discussion bores you.

It does not lead to discussion though, does it? It just descends into farce. We all know a number of people want SA (I am not fussed myself) but what serious discussion can we have about?

I can only think of one direction a discussion would go and it would be something like this:-

Poster #1 - "Anyone know if SA is gonna launch on VM"

Various posters reply - "Nope, not heard a thing"

Dave would of course chime in with - "It's never coming" (:D - sorry Dave) and that would be the end of discussion in my eyes.

The only other avenue for discussion regarding SA would be its content, which many people will now know is now available on other legitimate websites, some less legitimate websites or via the DNS foreign Netflix hook-up thingy.

I have no problem with SA being mentioned, and any possible rumoured launch dates (I like the speculation) as long people don't waste pages arguing over it. These last few pages have not been a discussion about SA though.

No one needs to define or be concerned about the form any discussion will take. Those who are interested in the post can read it and respond if they are interested in it and those who aren't can just skip past the post.

A couple of people telling other people what 'they' thought was appropriate to post is what caused this discussion. They should just concern themselves with their own posts and skip ones that don't interest them.

Many posters do quite clearly ignore various posts on here. Some do respond to posts regarding SA by questioning why we talk about on here, others respond with rumours of launch dates. As I understand it, this would classed as taking part in a discussion on SA. Their opinions on the subject are surely as valid as any others. Just because you do not agree with them, does not mean no-one can post them. Perhaps I am being obtuse and misunderstanding the definition of discussion though.

BIB - Ironically, I don't think it's appropriate for you tell people what they can and can not post on here either. If they feel a post/discussion is not relevant, they are allowed to say so, I am not aware of anything that says they to bite their tongue. It seems rather like a "pot and kettle" situation here.
You have no right to say people should just concern themselves with their posts just because they want to question the validity of other posts or discussions. Obviously the post interested them in the first place, so they have the right to reply to it and not skip past it.

You choose not to skip past some posts on SA, why should others have to skip it.

Hopefully though, you will only concern yourself with your own posts on this matter and skip this post because it does not interest you. I certainly do not want this to drag on.

In fairness, I don't think he was. I was quite critical of BT prior to launch although I have been impressed with their coverage since, but there's aatot.

MB I get the general impression that insider information has dried up in, say, the last 6 months compared to the few years before that- is that right?

I think that is more down to the fact that there isn't actually many more channels virgin doesn't have and are in a position both financially viable or third party willing to acquire.

Depending on Media Boy's reply, that was mynext question. Has he, in his 7 years, known a similar period of quiet, and what happened either side of it?

I think you've nailed it really. There's really no news for anyone to leak or report because the platform is now quite mature. We'll see more on-demand services, more HD versions of channels, and eventually 4k versions too, the roll-out of Local TV, ad-hoc launches like BBC1+1 and maybe some extra channels added from providers at renewal time. But we'll see nothing as exciting as before, unless there is significant industry restructuring or Virgin decides to look at more non-English-speaking channels.

The really good thing about significant change is that it invariable happens when you least expect it !

Bar the HD Channels, CSC Media Channels and Sky Basic Channels nothing good left for Virgin to go after.

Try living in an old Telewest area. I want mad every time I saw new channels being added to NTL.

(Telewest was poor that adding new channels)

I hope not, 5* +1 is far more useful and broadcasts for more hours. Do we really need what will largely be a teleshopping channel from Channel 5?

If VM take it, it would be a good replacement for Best Direct, keeping 5* +1.

i'd imagine its something silly like that. instead of signing a new contract VM just have done a swap of available channels. it'll probably be re-added back on in a few months.

It appears to be a decision of the broadcaster, not Virgin Media, according to the item, Vince. Hey, sorry to hear that you are working today, what a bummer!

At the moment we only have the article on the Radio Times website to go by, so nothing conclusive. The bottom line here is that Channel 5 +24, has been stated has having only 5 hours a day of programmes (7pm until midnight), with the rest of the schedule filled with teleshopping slots. That may well be useful for Channel 5 to fill their unused capacity on Freeview but not particularly attractive to other platforms. Sure, 5* +1 also fills up the schedule with teleshopping but does actually have programmes from 2pm to 1am. 11 hours of programming compared to the 5 hours planned for the new channel.

This is basically a teleshopping channel with a few hours of programmes. I don't really want to see hours of teleshopping in the entertainment section, it's bad enough overnight. Hopefully Channel 5 will be bought by a company more interested in filling their schedules with programmes than being glorified shopping channels.

Note: On Freeview, 5* currently shares with Television X, hence the midnight closedown. Current reports suggest that the midnight to 10am hours won't be available to Channel 5 +24 on Freeview. This indicates that Television X could possibly be transferred to share with this new stream. That would allow 5* to extend its schedule past midnight on all platforms (or more likely, as this is Channel 5, allow them to carry the overnight teleshopping strands currently shown on VM / Sky on Freeview. :erm: )

Yes, I think it does look that way OB. There will be some reason eg legal fees or carriage costs meaning that C5 prefer a swap to an addition.

In addition, the channels to be dropped are not unified across the platforms. The weakest channel on Sky from the C5 stable is 5 USA+1, so that will be dropped instead of 5*+1.

I used to watch a few programmes on 5USA but then they started saturating the channel with NCIS and the like and I've never gone back since!

Pity, a wasted opportunity, I think.

Oh you've missed the fun :D we've had more news about a certain channel coming, we had Dave say "it's never going to happen" Dave is right because 3 different sources have confirmed to me it isn't coming anytime soon. We now refer SA to the channel that shall not be named. There's a new prototype TiVo box in testing.
NatgeowildHD, HistoryHD, DisneyHD, DisneyXDHD are rumoured to launch within the first quarter of 2014.
Some more channels will change packs within the second quarter of 2014.
Now if only there was a thread where you could read about all of this. :p: just teasing you about the thread bit mate but what i just mentioned is basically all the news for now.

That wouldn't make any sense at all, it would just mean additional playout facilities would be required but not fully utilised. Where have you seen that 5 USA +1 will be dropped on Sky? I've not seen that in any of the reports. Channel 5 +24 is reported to be taking the EPG position currently occupied by 5 USA +1 on Sky but that may simply indicate that 5 USA +1 will be demoted further down the Sky EPG, as 5* +1 was when Channel 5 +1 began broadcasting.

That's certainly a possibility, but I doubt it as it would mean cash strapped C5 having to buy another SD slot on Sky.

Playout facilities shouldn't be a problem. This grand term was used in the past for playout suites, but these days TV technologists say they are little more than a few computers in an office!

It's not just the playout suite but the distribution system too.

I'm not so sure about them being "cash strapped". The business has been turned around from a £48m loss making operation at the time of the last sale, with a far more healthy £20m profit for the 6 months to August 2013.

True, Desmond has turned it around and is now looking to sell.

They still don't seem to want to spend any more than they absolutely have to though eg no C5 HD on Freeview, putting Channel 5 HD behind a paywall on satellite etc.

True but surely the cheapest thing to do would have been to put 5* +1 or 5 USA +1 onto the extra slot on Freeview. Replacing or creating additional 24/7 streams on other platforms seems crazy if it's only to accommodate 5 hours of actual programmes.

It would not mean buying a new SD Slot. 5*+1 is being scrapped on all platforms with 5USA+1 being moved into the old 5*+1 slot on Sky.

Regards earlier, 5USA+1 is not the worst performing channel, it's actually 5*+1.

Actually, channel 5 has got some good US shows:

Person of Interest
Sons Of Anarchy
The Mentalist
Justified

Channel 5 are not picking up the current season (5) and final season (6) of Justified but Netflix has 1- 4 so hopefully they will get 5 & 6.

They also have second run rights for shows such as Castle.

As a primetime repeat channel, for a large part of the year, Channel 5 +24 will have the bulk of it's schedule filled with repeats of the previous day's Big Brother episodes. That should really be compelling viewing. :td:

Well IMDB seems to be in agreement with me:

Person of Interest IMDB rating 8.4
Sons Of Anarchy IMDB rating 8.8
The Mentalist IMDB rating 8.2

I did say it was not aimed at you solely. I was simply playing devils advocate to a comment you posted regarding someone elses taste in TV shows. I simply stated the opposite to what you said. Not sure why you felt the need to get so defensive about it.

As has been mentioned before, content is subjective to the viewer. The Bridge (the best thing on T.V. by far - imho) scores 8.5 on IMDB, but many people will say The Tunnel (7.7 IMDB rating) is a better show.

I never said they were not highly regarded.

You seem to be ignoring the point I have been making regarding the fact that some people do not like some of the shows you and others clearly do. It does not make their opinions wrong.

If you want to snipe my posts, that's up to you. It's just a shame you won't reply to my other points.

I detest the American remake of The Killing which somehow manages a 8.1 rating on IMDB. Does that mean I should like it nearly as much as the, imho, far superior original (8.3 rating) or am I not allowed an opinion that differs from IMDB?

Anyway this is boring me now, I welcome your reply though.

to be fair to them - they did mention Freesat – 132 but did not highlight it was a replacement

just now channel 132 is 5* +1

its a shame as I would prefer them to add a new channel rather than replacing one - lots of space on freesat - have never looked at any of this lot.

From the website ....

A few slight changes to our channel line ups over the next few weeks beginning with the news that Best Direct (EPG 742) has closed on all platforms as of Saturday 18th January.

Channel 5 + 1 (EPG 152) is also due to close on Monday the 3rd of February and will be replaced with a brand new channel called 5+24 on Tuesday 4th February. This is a new entertainment channel but is not a direct 24 hours replay of previous content and will be available on the same EPG 152.

But fear not! You will still be able to view content previously recorded on 5*+1.

Finally in February, Sky Movies Drama & Romance / HD will be temporary changing their channel name to Sky Valentine and Sky Valentine HD from February 1st until February 17th.

You guys mention shows I completely forgot about, showing even more so, that Channel 5 does have some good shows.

And to hopefully keep Harry happy (which I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't really care if it doesn't), I don't have to like and watch a show to acknowledge that it's good.

Sky Movies have been advertising the return of Sky Movies Superheroes and Sky Movies Oscars since Christmas. At a guess, Sky Movies Oscars will be at the start of March with Sky Movies Superheroes between 17th and it arriving so probably no return of Drama and Romance until after the Oscars.

I dont subscribe to the movie channels, so I can;t check, but ..

If you record a film from (for example) Sky Christmas, and then it changes it's name to Sky Oscars (or something), would this prevent you watching a recording made earlier ?

You rarely "upset" me PB, I just enjoy playing devils advocate and having a spirited discussion - I will admit my boredom comment might have taken things too far though.

All I will say in response to you post is that other people do not have to have the same opinion as you. People are allowed to say a channel is rubbish because the content does appeal to them if that it is how they feel. If you feel differently, that is great but surely others are allowed to post otherwise?

Not on Sky no you can still watch the movie you recorded. I imagine VM would be the same too.

Bit of news just come in to me - UniversalHD is back on the horizon expected to be on VM within 1st quarter of 2014. This is only a rumour for now.

LOL. Trolling, really? Please forgive me expressing my thoughts and engaging in a discussion on a discussion forum. I can see why people are upset that my line of discussion has veered of the thread title, but it has veered off topic many times in the past. People seem to like the thread as it is. I have no problem if people think I am a troll, there is always the option to put me and posts on ignore.

Some might say referring to one poster as Carl (and then when that post is ignored) writing a clearly inflammatory post aimed directly at one person is trolling. Perhaps my understanding of trolling is wrong though.

Please feel free to report any of my posts though (if you have not done so yet).

Mods, please feel to free issue infractions against me if my posts are classed as trolling.

And no, I don't find the "constant" changing of names annoying.
