I picked up this release on http://www.comex2000uk.com/14/press-...54/msan-update

MSAN Update
Wednesday, 8th January 2014
Comex 2000 UK Ltd are proud to have played a key part in the first BG-30 SDH/KEYMILE MSAN transmission project, working on behalf of Virgin Media and in partnership with Keymile.

Great teamwork involving Virgin Media, Keymile and Comex 2000 UK Ltd was the key enabler for the successful outcome.

The works involved initial MSAN changeovers within Street Cabinets, migrating the copper fed customers as part of the process.

This was followed up by a full SDH migration including fibre changeovers, protecting customer service at all times.

Interesting. I know some of those words.

What's that mean in thicko speak?

Aggregation of bandwidth at the level 3 cabinet. This frees up fibre spectrum and would be necessary, IMO, for the higher speeds of DOCSIS 3.1.

Is that the only reason why they'd do that, though? Could that have anything to do with them simply adding more channels? We've seen a couple of new frequencies crop up lately, might be related?

Also, my (very) limited understanding of 3.1 was that it uses lots of smaller "slices" of the spectrum multiplexed together rather than a few channels, so that much more spectrum could be used and less is wasted.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

If you aggregate at the cabinet, you free up discrete frequencies that otherwise have to be aggregated at the Hub. That leaves VM free to add more channels, as you say.

I got the free upgrade email today. I'm currently on 20mb & have the old ambit 256 modem. I know I'll need the superhub to get 50mb. How do I get the superhub & will I be charged for it? I think I will be able to self install it. Any help appreciated :-)

Did it require you to take out a new contract?

no you won't be charged for it and normally they provide a link in the email to take you to myvirginmedia where you can activate the upgrade and request a new shub.

.....and a lot lot more! ;)

For those that weren't following Sparc Consortium's progress > http://arxiv.org/pdf/1402.2228.pdf

Thank G*d VM finally managed to implement Split Architecture and Software Defined Networking more intelligently to use OFDM later without changing all those line amps, diplex filters and SHubs in one go! ;)

Of course makes all the dummy guides to HFC topology somewhat more complicated! :(

Got an email earlier stating I'd been upgraded to 152mb, not home long and done a few tests. Getting between 135 and 145 down and about 11 up.

Probably not the best time to test though.

Why do VM repeatedly send me emails telling me my internet connection is going to get supercharged. Each time they tell me I'm going to get 152Mb they give me a link to find out when it will happen. Four times now I have re-discovered that it will be between August 2014 and January 2015 and am told I have already registered my wish to be told as it happens

Each time they send me an email I expectantly follow the link hoping for a pleasant date change.

Hmm, i had (wrongly) assumed they would have the old upload speeds ie 50/5 and 100/10. Guess not.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

You can call up and get it done now. I just called them and she could have done it there and then but it would have meant being re-contracted, whereas if you wait for it to be done automatically it doesn't.

The button to "order now" on the MyVirginMedia page doesn't mention a contract, i forgot to ask her about that part.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

My original date not long ago was between March 2014 and March 2014.

Now I get the email and click through and it has changed to April 2014 and June 2014.
My contract expires in May so I am going to re-evaluate everything now Infinity has arrived. I know they not be as quick as I get with Virgin but to be honest the 120Mb I am on now is faster than I need really it's just it's part of the package and if I start trying to lower it the price actually goes up!

My area isn't due to be upgraded until August 2014 to January 2015.

I was able to get the upgrade through retentions:

I also agreed to a new 12 month contract, but I believe this was because they also gave me an 18-month loyalty discount of £8.

My conversation with VM chat just now:-

Jonathan: Hi, welcome to Virgin Media. How can I help?
Jonathan: Just type your question below…
You: Yes please. I just entered my post code looking for the best virgin deal in my street. It says I can get 152Mb. Is that true?
Jonathan: I will be happy to answer your question about the Broadband speed.
Jonathan: Can I have your complete address along with your postcode to check for the required information?
You: 23, ***********, Coventry. CV3 ***
Jonathan: Okay, great news - you're in a Virgin Media cable area. That means we'll be able to bring our services to you by fibre optic cable, specially designed for digital services.
Jonathan: Your address is capable of getting upto Broadband 152Mb with us.
You: If I were an existing customer in this area, on 120Mb could I have that as an upgrade?
Jonathan: Yes, Broadband 120Mb has been upgraded to Broadband 152Mb.
You: So mt neighbour at number 25 on 120 Mb can ring now for that upgrade?

Jonathan: Yes, he can upgrade the package. Infact, we'll automatically upgrade his package to Broadband 152Mb without any additional cost.
You: OK. So he doesn't have to wait until August 2014 the date on which his upgrade will happen automatically.
Jonathan: No, our existing customer's don't need to wait for the package upgrade. If there's an upgrade from Virgin Media, we upgrade the package at the same time.
You: THat is great. I'll let him know. Cheers Bye!!

Well! There you have it guys. You CAN upgrade now.

I think this is really dishonest way of dealing with existing customers. Why do that!

I've just been through to a very nice british lady who has upgraded me to 152Mbps, I recently agreed a new contract last week so they put mine through with no change what so ever.

Happy days, 152Mbps and no download limit. Finally Virgin, like being back on the original 50Mbps and 100Mbps when we weren't affected by STM :)

I'm pretty sure it said - July - August 2014.

Just checked and it is in fact June - August 2014. Amazing how I could be upgraded 3 months early :-)

I went on the VM website and entered a neighbours details to see if they could get 152Mbps, as soon as it said they could I thought I would try my chances.

Tested it via wired cat 6 and achieving full speed!

excellent. I am going to get a coffee and wake up and then I'll give them a call and report back. I don't need the speed increase and probably won't notice it but I want it for the sake of having it :) The increased upload will be nice.

Good luck let us know how it goes, the guy I spoke to did ask if I already had "the latest virgin hub" so they might try and send you one out :(

Finally managed to get my speed upgrade :)

How ever downstream speeds are now suddenly slow for some reason (80Mbit) getting 12.2Mbit upload, Have been told to wait an hour or so for it to get up to speed, we'll see :)

Anyone else had this?

i was half expecting that. I am hoping they'll push the config down and send a shub2 out and I just won't activate it (if I can get full speed on my vmng300). Otherwise I have no probs banging it in modem mode.

As long as they don't try and charge you for the SH2 :p: but to be honest after we had our first duff SH2 swapped out this one has been fine, no lock ups or anything.

Most I saw last night while testing was 163Mbps on my usenet client, highest I got on speedtest was around 158

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

We can all see what VM are doing. They are having to play the big willy game with BT whilst at the same lamely trying to throttle back demand because area capacity upgrades aren't yet complete.

I'm not privy to the detail on those upgrades (I'm referring here to downstream). Any DOCSIS 3 bonded channel segment can be configured for 152 meg; it's just a question then of congestion. So my guess is that the upgrades required in most cases are in the form of a simple resegmentation involving more line cards and possibly CMTs.

So all yous getting early upgrades to 152/12 may expect growing congestion until your area has been resegmented.

Seph, any way to spot from shub stats if this is the case? I live in a heavily student populated area but never experienced any kind of congestion, a tech we had one once told me Newcastle is the biggest / busiest part of their network, not sure if it's true but hopefully it's already been sorted so this doesn't cause us any issues.

Just got it! Instant upgrade after one hell of a battle! My upgrade slot was August 2014 to January 2015. Don't be put off by obstacles put in your way. Some of the sales / retentions team are not up to speed (pun intended) and swear blind that even though your next door neighbour can have the upgrade, you can't. Indeed they palmed me off to 'technical' in Bangalore, just to get rid of me.

My second attempt got me put through to a very nice and bright person called Lisa who re-contracted me immediately and also saved me £5.00 a month. The upgrade happened before we ended our conversation.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/79.png

We had a really good conversation about other stuff. Lisa wouldn't tell me the colour of her underwear, but she did say that she would speak to the sales team about ensuring that requests for upgrades from existing customers. She also confirmed that the 152Mb was so that VM could say they offered twice the maximum down speed offered by BT Infinity.

Lisa also confirmed that the reason that the rollout had been phased for existing customers was that the admin system would not have been able to manage all those upgrade actions in one go and that the new customer opportunity was to catch new customers. She agreed that this was being rather mean to existing customers especially when, as I have discovered, you can get 152 Mb for less than you get 120Mb because of discounting.

Seph. I discussed the issues with the nice lady in Sales / Retentions. She stated that they didn't release the upgrade instantaneously across the whole country because that would be just too many modems to reconfigure all at once. It wasn't because of technical issues on the network. However, she said, anyone who asks can get upgraded if they are happy to be re-contracted.

I accept that some areas have yet to be resegmented. I wonder how many of those who managed to get their upgrade are in areas still suffering from congestion and are awaiting resegmentation.

I agree with this. My cmts (sotn8) has been slowly getting worse in the peak times when more often than not, I would not be able to get the headline speeds. With the new speed tiers available for new and existing customers (who ask for it), the problem will now get worse at a faster rate.

Even this (Sat) morning when you might expect a lightly loaded network, I am unable to match the figures quoted by others who have upgraded to 152/12 e.g.
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/77.png
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/78.png

The sad news is that all of these tests are using Virgin speedtest.net servers (so when I log a call there is no wiggle room on their part)

I can only conclude than sotn is awaiting the resegmentation you refer to ...

Looks like you may be in one of those areas not technically ready. I wonder what new customers contracting to get 152/12 think of this when they get results like yours on a Saturday morning.

Just spoke to support and they did say that there is a fault (F002097435) open on my "sotn8 upstream" where a cat c resegmentation is underway with a completion estimate of 5th March. I have played their game of estimates before so this will certainly not be done by then but at least they will give you a credit for "degradation of service" .. We will see .....

Now this is interesting, the fault code they gave me was the same they gave me in Sep 2012 link! I have my very own fault code that never closes ..

I was told from inside VM that my area had not yet been "prepped" for 152 meg. That wouldn't sit with the what the "nice lady in Wales" said - although I think there is a truth there, as well.

But I'm sure I can get 152 meg if I want it. The web site is clear on availability in my area.
