Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

You know what bugs me about the update? Clash reporting. Its not accurate. Some programmes are reported as not being able to record because all 3 tuners are in use, when in some cases, they won't be recorded because they already been recorded earlier that day or week.

In other cases, the scheduled programme won't record due to a actual clash, but it will recorded at a later date.

Its misleading at times, and gives the impression that some programmes won't record at all, when it already has or will. Its kinda overkill, why not just report clashes which prevent the programme from recording at all?

What's clash reporting then?

What you describe has always happened in recording hiccups.

I believe you need the updated tivo app.

This is basically a replacement service for the youtube remote app

Just watched Texas Chainsaw via Netflix, Via TiVo!. Whilst not the best movie in the world, the picture quality was excellent!. No streaming problems at all!. I did notice when you hit the info button the remote, it brings up the streaming info, and it was showing 1080 superHD. Very impressed, I'll be keeping Netflix, much cheaper option than sky movies subs, and lots of choice!.

Goto Planned Recordings, there's now options there (via the blue button) to show clashes. Everything there is reported as a clash, when in some cases it isn't a clash at all.

That's good; on many Netflix devices, for any 1080 stream, the streaming info only shows that it is 1080HD, so you don't know If you are getting the standard HD or super HD.

If you can't tell then why does it matter?

You're obviously not a details person, are you?

You can get a Netflix stream that maybe doesn't look as good as it should do for something that is labelled Super HD on the title details.

Is it because the original content just isn't good, or is it because although it should be streaming at Super HD, either the Netflix servers aren't dishing up the 4300 or 5800 kbps of super HD streams or the Tivo connection is struggling and giving a lower streaming rate?

If the device streaming info only shows 1080HD for any quality 1080 stream, you don't know. But I it shows 1080 Super HD when it does get a Super HD stream, and the quality isn't very good, then you know it's the content. If it only shows 1080HD, on a super HD title, then you know there is congestion somewhere in the streaming.

You should be able to subscribe by either method. You can sign up via the app on other platforms so I don't see why the TiVo should be any different.

No, before deciding that I actually did want to subscribe to Netflix, I had a free trial 4 times ;) lol. Just use a different email and you get another trial, Netflix doesn't take your home address like LoveFilm does so therefore each new email address triggers a new trial :)

It never recognised my iPad or Smart TV every time I changed email address, TiVo however may be different. It's always worth a punt though to try it lol

Someone mentioned it earlier, but you can press the info button while streaming Netflix and it shows the bandwidth required for the current content and if Super HD mode is active.

For a episode of Castle I watched last night, it was Super HD at 5.7Mb, but as you say, the original content may not have looked great to start with.

Yes, it appears that the Tivo Netflix app, using the info button, will display the differing 1080p streams so that you know whether you're actually getting Super HD.

Most Netflix devices will only show that it is 1080HD. That could mean that it is the 3850kbps standard 1080p or either of the Super HD streams, 4300 or 5800kbps.

Tivo is good that you actually know whether you are getting the standard 1080p stream or the Super HD 1080p stream.

pressing the Info button, gives you info on the sound, like 5.1, etc, running time, and the download speed, and at what definition you are watching it at.

It will be good to compare it with my WDTV Live SMP box when I eventually get the update. That also shows the audio type.

I thought they took CC details and if you do not cancel your card gets charged

just looked and that is the case

geordiechris 10-11-2013 12:33

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Yes they do take CC details but obviously if you're intending on just having the free trial then you always cancel during the free trial period. Once the free trial period has ended, you sign up again using your CC details and a different email address to start the 'new' free trial. You can repeat this again and again, as I did.

Nice one, thanks.

Don't get the bitrate on the WD box and as said previously, only 1080HD, so don't know if that's super HD or not. The bitrate is a great addition IMHO.

They do some get away by making multiple paypal accounts and using them to sign up , Netflix are getting wise to this and will be introducing a address system soon.
So you will have to enter your cc plus your billing address.

but paypal has to be tied to a bank account or a card and will not let you use the same for more than one account

You cannot reuse the same card again, I tried myself. You can only use either a card or PayPal account once along with an email address once for the free trial.

Netflix don't see the card or bank account details for them to check against their system, all they can check it the paypal email address. They send an authorisation to PayPal to take the payment and then wait for the authorisation back.

I signed up for Netflix quite a few months ago. I had a free month but never felt the need to cheat them. I do use Hola to access the U.S. Netflix but i do not see that as stealing. I can view it on my laptop, phone, Nexus 7 and tv through the Xbox - i am eagerly awaiting the tivo update. Even in the few months since i have been a Netflix customer it has improved and many more things are available. It would be good to see them give Sky a run for their money for movies. :)

Netflix is popular so having that available to those who want it
Easier screens for managing planned recordings/series links
Back to back recordings which frees up your tuners

That's what I like about it anyway.

It's worse than exploiting free trials, you're viewing content that is not available to you at all.

Londonbornpaddy 10-11-2013 19:29

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Hmm interesting. You think that because i pay a monthly fee its worse than getting something for free over and over again using different email accounts? I am paying Netflix so why does it matter which content i watch? Genuinely interested in your opinion.

paultrademark 10-11-2013 19:34

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

I am viewing content that is on a months free trial, if that means repeating the free trial by using another card then that's not doing anything wrong in my opinion nor is it illegal.
If I lived in a shared student house, with 8 people living there and they all did a month free each so they could watch it in the property, is that wrong too?

Where as you are viewing content that is not licensed to broadcast in this country with that service you are paying for, you would be as well downloading from torrents as it amounts to the same thing.

Londonbornpaddy 10-11-2013 19:43

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Ok. I disagree with you for a few different reasons the main one being that at least Netflix are getting some money from me but none at all from your student house. There are quite a few things on US Netflix that have been on the BBC so i guess not only have they been licensed but i helped pay for them with my television license.

Lol and there is a lot of stuff on there that doesnt have the broadcast rights to be shown here on Netflix or they would show it.. so its ok to rip of those content providers is it?

---------- Post added at 22:36 ---------- Previous post was at 22:31 ----------

If Netflix have a system that can't tell if someone has had a free trial already at that property then people will continue to access the content via a free trial. Now if thats either by different people at the same property doing it once each or the same person using different card details then Netflix need to fix their system.

If Tesco had a glitch on their system and were offering a product at £6 when it should have clearly been £60 would you go in and offer them the full amount or take the item and pay your £6 and go?

Londonbornpaddy 10-11-2013 22:51

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Ok ending this now as nicely as i can. You are arguing your point that it is better to get things for free through a legal loophole over my position of wanting more content for actual money paid. I cannot win this. I joined Netflix not Netflix UK. If i travel to America with my Netflix account i am surely entitled to watch their Netflix there. I have no idea about the Tesco scenario because that is not relevant. That's up to your conscience. It sounds like you think i should pay more to Netflix ... while you continue to pay nothing. I have a funny feeling if you asked them they would say - Hey we are a business after all we would appreciate some monthly bills being paid rather than providing free stuff for people.

Fair enough you think you're doing nothing wrong.
I beg to differ, I never said what many people do is right but if there is a loophole people exploit them all the time... which is what both of us are doing.
Lets leave it at that as you say.

Using smart dns is not illegal , i'm getting tired of this copyright , streaming is illegal bullcrap. It's not illegal it's just a civil matter.
In North Korea and China it is illegal yes in the uk it is not illegal we do not go by North Korean or Chinese laws.
Smart dns and vpns are perfectly legal to use , if companies such as cw , netflix , fox etc really were concerned by it they could easily just make it where you sign up and you only get services matching your address country. So can we just stop this it's illegal no it's not rubbish it gets boring.

Sorry it's your post i quoted paul please don't think i'm having a go at you or anything mate.

http://www.eyeondemand.com/faq/q-is-...ive-dns-legal/

https://www.vpnuk.info/faq.html

hope those links clear up this smart dns/vpn is illegal garbage.

I never said it was illegal mate lol

Yeah Netflix could block it if they wanted to by your address. . They could also block the free trials to one per address..

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

Hi i was not saying i am right you are wrong. If Using another method of watching Netflix in the US was blocked i would hesitate to investigate furthur. With so many torrent sites shut down last week there are obviously moves to block people downloading things for free. With Sky you can get Sky go and using my dads password i can use a device to watch his sky. I think off the top of my head 4-6 people can use one Netflix account. All i was offering was an alternative to make Netflix even more appealing without fracturing any laws. I am really looking forward to the Tivo update it's far more interesting than Sky Atlantic as an option. Even if you stick to just the UK flix there are oceans of high quality HD old and new2 series and films to keep you happy for years.:) No harm meant just love my Netflix and get a little devensive. Apologies for any offence,

I just noticed mate lol blame the Jack Daniels :erm: i mostly use the smart dns for shows i want to watch which no uk broadcaster have picked up , plus having a few American friends they tend to post spoilers on their fb lol.
At least by using the networks own sites or Netflix i'm not risking getting a virus or trojan etc on my pc , also in a way i kind of do pay for some content as i'll click on a advert or something as the network gets money for each click. It's kind of my way of paying my way if that makes sense? lol.

They are now more than half way through in terms of the number of areas that now have Netflix, so by the end of the week sounds achievable.

Well if they have taken two weeks to do just over half then l think it will have all been rolled out by the end of next week OB.

And if VM follow past form, then my area (02) will be the very last area to be given the upgrade, therefore I won't get mine this week.

Must say I'm more impressed with the additional TiVo updates, rather than worrying about Netflix, which is available on our TV anyway. A lot faster and some key improvements in recording options and managing series links, etc.

According to the technical people on this forum, no area is 'always last'. Even if yours is on this occasion, I think that judging by how quickly they have passed the half way mark, there is a reasonable expectation that the rollout should be complete by the end of the week (Thursday evening).

They only started the rollout last week , the areas that got the update before that were part of the trial.

From what I have read from those who have had the update, I must say you make a very good point, Netflix appears to be a very nice bonus and very welcome addition to the TIVO.

It seems we are getting closer and closer to our American cousins with their TIVO experience. I wonder what the next major update (whenever that may be) will bring.

I dread to think what I would do without TIVO, and that is before I have even received the update.:)

My poor Samsung Tivo didn't survive the update last week (sob!). Had to have a replacement (a Cisco this time) and had a fun weekend trying to remember my wishlists! All good now and the Tivo does seem more snappy. I like the new wishlist entry screen especially.
