Perhaps it's a way of morphing TV XL into a pseudo HD charge, so that they can still say that there is no specific HD charge??

Why are Virgin always years behind Sky when it comes to things like this? I mean, its not exactly rocket science, is it? Everyone knew, years ago, that people might like to be able to watch TV at a time that suited them, but as usual its left down to Sky to lead the way. I think the terrestrial channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5) tinkered with the idea a few years ago, but they obviously gave up on it, as we have heard nothing about it from any of them since. But surely Virgin could have come up with something back then. It would have been a great selling point for their TV service, but obviously they couldn't be bothered. They should take a leaf out of Sky's book, because when they "invent" a new technology, they let everyone know it.

I dont know how long Virgin think they will last in this business if they cant keep up with the competition.

ps.. I wonder if this new "On demand" service from Sky will include, not just all the TV shows that you might want to see, but also the hundreds of TV news segments and interviews, that are vital to any successful "on demand" service.

I'm baffled , your trying to compare satellite and cable for On Demand , isn't cables two way system always going to trump satellite when it comes to delivering On Demand seems pretty obvious to me , incidentally Sky haven't just started On Demand they were delivering Push VOD via Sky Anytime back in 2007.

VM have massive advantages when it comes to On Demand content , for one its compatible with all their STB's , it doesn't affect your BB speed and starts playing instantly that said I believe Sky have done an excellent job with their implementation of pull VOD and their content range is getting better and better with many changes to come and that's all thanks to VM putting pressure on them with their comprehensive On Demand offering.

I thought the line about the BBC, ITV...etc might have given it away

Most adverts tend to suggest like your being offered something groundbreaking when in fact the products available all over the show :D

I was thinking that too, unless they have plans to build up the XL package, this could lead to many customers downgrading packages.

I wonder if the news that HMV has gone into administration will affect the Universal channel (i'm not sure if they are owned by the same company)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013...l-million-bill

If so, we've only just got the +1 variant!

It will have no affect, Universal didn't own HMV they just had an agreement to pay the rent on some of their stores.

I just wish VM would be more proactive and tell customers about changes, Yes they've updated the website to show for example that FX is now Fox and Syfy is now in M+ but I know that if I phone Grim Jr she'll not know that her M+ package has changed because she doesn't read this thread or pick through the VM website.

Cheers

Sorry think I still have two :). Not moaning or complaining. I wonder how desperate people are that these offerings would generate so much glee :erm:

Markers for on demand watched part way, then I would get excited :D

Or better still - no chance- BOX sets of ABC  Speaking of which - not really- any idea what these USB TV sticks ( all over the world types) really pick up. I am guessing its non encrypted satellite  How much "damage" would they inflict on services in UK as they seem to be cheap

They aren't that bad. There is the new Virgin Media Presents www.virginmediapresents.com which goes out as a weekly email which I'd expect to have details of all the current changes once they've actually all happened.

There is a sign up link coming shortly to allow people to sign up for it

I have to disagree BenMcr. Whilst, I am happy with the channel line up, the more choice we get, the happier I become. However, VM (in my eyes) are really poor with their comms.

Whilst it will be nice to have this newsletter, it does not mention anything about more4+1 launching. It also talks about celebrating the "arrival" of The Africa Channel, which turned up months ago. Which once again, was not highlighted anywhere (that I am aware of.)
Also I have had a quick look on the VM website, and there is nothing in customer news about more4+1 launching.

For me, it's a real shame VM do not highlight the changes/arrivals anywhere. I imagine there are a large number of BB customers (who don't have VM TV) who have Virginmedia.com as their home page, but are not aware of what improvements/changes (however large/minor) are happening the TV side of things.

Having said that, there is a high chance I have missed the news informing us of recent changes/arrivals. :)

The Virgin media presents is limited. My daughter who does not look at this site has no idea when /if new channels are added, it is good to here that VM are listening to customers with regard to information as it is in their own interest to ensure customers are aware of these changes.:)

You are correct there hasn't been an announcement yet, but as not all the changes have happened yet, it makes more sense to announce them all in one go, rather than a 'drip drip' approach.

Ginx.tv isn't on a UK satellite so it would cost more than most channels to carry, maybe they'll do an app.

Confirmed: Five Channels to move to lower packages soon.

I can now reveal that Virgin Media are set to move the following channels to the M+ Package:

-TCM
-Film 4+1
-Cartoon Network
-Boomerang

The following will also move to the L Package:

-Cartoon Network Too

My insider told me they will move 'soon' but on the same day TCM HD, TCM2 and Cartoon Network HD launches on Virgin TV.

Yup, I can't justify spending the money required for Sky Movies when I could join Lovefilm/Blockbuster(!?)/Netflix for half the cost. I am really looking forward to seeing TCM movies in HD. In particular the rather underrated (in my eyes) Dark City. :)

Who cares what they say? VM's total package is the best service for me by a long chalk. People should focus on total package requirements and equipment functionality rather than just isolate one aspect of a service to fight over. For someone else, Sky's overall package will be the best for them.

I agree with that 100% , I also like hearing people on other platforms opinions and views on things , a forum would be a pretty boring place if everybody agreed and had the same thoughts.

Agreed. It's just a shame we get the 'Mine's bigger than yours' brigade polluting the discussion; i.e., the ones who wouldn't know a ballanced view if it smacked them over the head!

Before joining SKY recently I didn't have SKY Movies. TiVo was a great tool for finding movies from various channels in HD. Channel 4 and Channel 5 over the weekend offer up some really good movies. Sy-fy HD also offered up the odd hidden gem. At one point I had around 90 HD movies stored on my TiVo box.

Couldn't agree more.

Whilst I enjoy a wider range of channels with SKY I do miss TiVo and the broadband speeds from Virgin. Oh and paying £10.00 per month for ESPN ain't too much fun either but I do get ESPN America in HD.

I know how to have a balanced view and I can at least say I've seen both sides of the fence, how many people who worship all that VM do can say that? So I think my view is more balanced than most, head is not hurting.

Wowzers, I have never had that many movies recorded, good effort:). I agree about channel 4 and 5, I have found Channel 4 and Film 4 have some real classics from the 40's and 50's at lunch time too (although b/w films are not to everyones tastes.) Much like Sy-Fy, I find the horror channel has the odd horror gem, alas though they are not HD:(

I have found that BBC Two has starting broadcast movies from 1930's to late 1940's in the early morning - from about 6am.

To be fair, nobody cares but them. If XP ends up as largely HD channels it just puts meat on the bones of their argument, I'd just prefer not to hear the mantra repeated too often.

But with XP losing a batch of its channels to M+, it does need beefing up a little with something new. There's still probably a significant number of XP users without HD.

Do they ever show Laurel & Hardy or Marx Brothers films? Used to watch these with my Grandad back in the very early 80's. It's been a long time since I've sat down and watched a classic. Can anyone else remember when they colourised old Laurel & Hardy movies about 25 years ago? It really put me off the films.

I don't recall them ever showing Laurel and Hardy or Marx Brothers, but they probably do slip the odd one in now and agian.
They probably colourised them make it more "appealing" to "younger" viewers:confused:. It fails horribly in my eyes. I could even make it through 10 mins of Alastair Sim's Scrooge movie when I saw that colourised.:bigcry:

I would guess the boxsets of all the Laurel and Hardy movies are dirt cheap to buy now though:)

Look at how long it took them to resolve the youtube streaming issues at the end of last year for example. The virgin fan clun cxan't deny that one ;)

Again goes to show how bad virgins network is compared to sky.

So bad that Netflix have named VM as the UK's best ISP for streaming their content:

I would expect that though wouldn't you , VM has more users on faster speeds than any other ISP , the rest are well behind when it comes to fibre connections.

Yeah, that was horrible.

SKY have got loads of niche channels broadcasting in wacky aspect ratios. Trying to watch them on a big TV is pretty painful.
