Train spotting has never been something I have thought of doing, however I am within short walking distance of a station that regularly hosts steam engines. At weekends I can hear the whistles & shunting as they leave.

One day I'll take a closer look:)

I saw a steam train for the ELR in the station t'other day.
The condition of the roof on the carriages was a joke - it looked like an old felt roofed shed that was in bad need of refelting. :(

Shame.
(prob a cost vs funds thing for the volunteers).

Ah the definitions of words:

New - As in new to where they're being deployed. Well anything's newer than a Pacer.

Modern - As in refurbished to look nice but be the same old crummy stuff underneath, see Pacer.

One has to analyse politician-speak very carefully.

How is it obscene? The national rail network is in constant need of maintenance and capacity upgrades. We all pay for a certain amount of that via tax, but it is fair that those who use it pay a greater share.

Network Rail is a not-for-profit operation. The "profit" of which you speak is used to fund capital projects which extend and improve the network. There are no shareholders to take a dividend.

No it isn't. Revenue over and above day-to-day spending is reinvested in capital projects to ensure the company meets government performance targets and any other obligations placed on it. It is not free to spend that money on "whatever".

That amount hasn't increased by 39pc by accident. Rail users are deliberately being charged more, and NR is deliberately spending the proceeds on improvements that benefit those rail users. It seems entirely fair to me.

As long as it benefits the Rail user and is to the betterment of the network l see no problem in what NR are doing.

That would explain the 30% increase in delays passengers are enduring and yes it is, the way the company is formed means it can use its own capital for "its own purposes"

Leamington - Banbury section to reopen 3 weeks earlier than expected

Network Rail has confirmed that the railway between Leamington Spa and Banbury will reopen on Friday 13 March - three weeks earlier than originally expected.

Quote:

The key route between Birmingham and London Marylebone and Birmingham, the Thames Valley, south coast and the port of Southampton is used by 130 passenger and freight trains a day. It has been closed since 31 January following a 350,000 tonne landslip near Harbury, a few miles south of Leamington Spa.

MODEL railways are getting steamy — with figures of people having sex.

Cheeky buffs are saucing up their trackside scenery with models in rude poses.

One set has a Peeping Tom staring at two protesting nude women sunbathers, another has a couple romping on a desk and one is of a naked elf.

The 18 figures, priced at £3 for one to £16 for a set of six, are made by German firm Noch and have nothing to do with iconic Hornby Railways.

<snip>

They are sold by Buffers Model Railways in Axminster, Devon, in the adult section of the shop’s website.

The most popular purchase is a pair of romping pigs.

Owner Maria Husson, 50, said: “All sorts of people buy them, for private collections or demonstration tracks.

“Normally they’d hide the rude figures in a house with a red light in the window, but if it’s just an adult audience they’d put them in view.”

Network Rail has ‘lost its grip’ on projects like the Manchester-Leeds electrification - and it’s costing the taxpayer.

That’s the damning conclusion from the Committee of Public Accounts, appointed by the House of Commons to probe how public cash is spent.

The TransPennine electrification was ‘paused’ after an original budget of £260m escalated to what experts claim could have been £600m following Network Rail ‘failings’.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced it was back on track last month following an M.E.N campaign - and there is now a 2024 completion date. But the cost has not been revealed.

The Committee of Public Account report highlights severe planning and budgeting failures in Network Rail’s current five-year investment programme.

It says the Department for Transport, Network Rail and the Office of Rail and Roads wrongly agreed an ‘unrealistic’ programme for 2014-19.

It says there is still ‘far too much uncertainty’ over costs and delivery dates for the TransPennine electrification.

IIRC did BR not increase the spacing between the pylons in order to save money when it electrified the ECML, thereby increasing the risk of cable breakage and limiting the prospects for future high speed services?

I tend to work in the control centres and switch rooms, I would have to defer that to our OLE design team. Sounds entirely plausible though given that a big issue was signal sighting at high speed, thus limiting the anticipated line speed. Hence designing the OLE for a higher speed probably wasn't seen as cost effective or necessary.

TRAIN buffs are getting excited about a secret railway that ran under Londoners’ feet for almost 100 years, with its tunnels running within a few feet of packed underground lines, is back up and running.

Snaking 70 feet below the ground, from Paddington to Whitechapel, the train moved tons of letters and packages across the city, has hid priceless art and was even a Hollywood film set.

Also known as the “mail train” – this is the first time since the service was abandoned more than 10 years ago that trains have been on the tracks. The intention is to open a looping mile of track to the public as a heritage site.

A test drive was carried out by engineers through a section of the mail rail track, ahead of its public opening next summer.

Let me tell you, as a Londoner while I can see we have the best transport system in the country, it doesn't always feel as though the government prioritises London over the north. Our local borough council has been told in the past that it has had it's funding cut so the government of the day can divert the money up north.

It's also worth noting that over a tenth of the population live within the M25. Kent and Surrey are also quite heavily populated on top of that, so it's logical that the London transport systems have a lot of money invested in them.

Not that I am, in any way, defending the lack of spending in other parts. The Government needs to concentrate a little less on projects that look good in advertising (such as HS2 and Crossrail) and a little more on upgrading the existing infrastructure so that other users can benefit. For instance, I live is what is apparently (in terms of the number of wealthy people) the richest borough in London. We do not have ANY tube stations, despite only being 10 miles from the center of town. We do have a massively overloaded train system though.

As said above, I agree. It'll never happen though. Come voting time, the Tories (or any party that happens to be in government0 can argue that they delivered big tent pole project like HS2 and Crossrail. Saying they delivered improvements across the network doesn't grab the attention nearly as well.

Last October Britain’s railway, a partnership of the public and private sector, published its plan to change and improve rail services, committing to delivering 5,700 new carriages by 2021. Today’s figures reveal a further 1,300 carriages will be arriving on Britain’s railway by the early 2020s, bringing the total number to just over 7,000.

New carriages are part of the long-term plan of the partnership railway. In the plan, called In Partnership for Britain’s Prosperity, rail companies commit to improving customer satisfaction to remain the top-rated major railway in Europe. The latest figures show them going even further. The long-term plan will secure almost £85bn of additional economic benefits for Britain.

The new carriages represent an investment of at least £13.8bn by the private sector in rail. This is bolstering public investment in major upgrades to the railway infrastructure which, combined with new carriages, will enable the partnership railway to run more than 6,400 extra services each week by 2021, benefitting all parts of the country.

The partnership railway’s long-term rolling stock strategy, published later this spring, will say that the total number of carriages running on Britain’s railway is estimated to increase from 13,000 to 15,900 – an increase of 22 per cent.

The new carriages will mean the retirement of some of the oldest trains on the network with rolling stock that has more seats, Wifi, power points, improved accessibility, air-conditioning and, in the case of the Caledonian Sleeper, even double en-suite bedrooms.

Pacer trains, dating back to the 1980s, which operate in the north of England will be replaced with 281 new electric and diesel carriages with Wifi, power sockets and digital information screens. On Merseyrail, trains that are almost 40 years old will be replaced with state-of-the-art carriages with space for more people and sliding ramps that allow level boarding at each doorway.

Good news at last for those suffering from the Pacers. :)

The East Coast rail franchise could be returned to the public sector after the government announced Virgin Trains had breached its £3.3bn contract.

The East Coast franchise was to be terminated three years early in 2020 under a controversial rail strategy announced by Grayling in November, potentially letting Virgin-Stagecoach off the hook for more than £1bn in promised payments to government. Quote from The Telegraph:

Rail fares will continue to rise when Labour renationalises the train network, shadow transport secretary Andy McDonald has said.

Mr McDonald said the party’s plans to take back the train companies and network into state hands are “not about freezing or reducing” rail fares.

Instead Labour would only increase fares by CPI not RPI rate of inflation – a policy already being examined by the Tories as an attempt to stop rail fares rising too quickly.

CPI - the consumer prices index - is currently 3 per cent, while the RPI measure - retail prices index - is 4 per cent.
So you'll still pay more under Labour. The difference being that nationalisation costs will come out of your taxes as well.

Plus, once the whole system becomes a single national whole once more, the trade unions can freeze every train in the country with a good old fashioned nationwide strike, on any issue that takes their fancy. Let’s not forget that. The unions are interested in state control because the structures inherent in state monopolies serve to increase union influence.

Quote from The Sun:

Ministers are “actively considering” axing the entire £56 billion high speed 2 rail network, it has emerged.

A senior Cabinet source told Channel 4’s Dispatches programme to be aired tonight that another option under review is only building HS2 to Birmingham amid fears the project’s budget is spiralling out of control.

Annual spending on HS2 over the next decade is on course to soar by a whopping 40 per cent to £6 billion, according to revelations by Channel 4 Dispatches.

This is equivalent to the amount Network Rail spends per year on maintaining and upgrading the entire rail network.

In public Theresa May remains committed to HS2 but the programme quoted a Cabinet minister saying she wanted to “scrap the whole thing” after entering No10 but “lacked the confidence” to follow through on it.

In a further blow for HS2 just one in five voters said they want the multi-billion pound project to be built.

They’ve nobody but themselves to blame. They didn’t want to bid for what was on offer and submitted bids for what they wanted to provide instead. It’s highly risky to deliberately make a pitch that doesn’t meet the client’s stated requirements - you’re effectively telling your potential customer that they’re wrong.

Northern Rail really is on the brink of collapse, if they aren't delayed they are cancelled because of no driver/guard/train. Strong rumours its about to be renationalised like the East Coast, but don't what that will solve in the short term. No doubt it will be delayed because of the election. Damage has been done over many years.

The problem with renationalisation in the current model is that it is only designed to ensure the trains keep running when a franchise fails. Services are run in a way that maintains the existing service but there’s no long term plan for investment or service development.

Northern would be saved from collapse in the sense that the trains would continue to operate (subject to driver and stock availability, and the absence of the wrong sort of leaves or snow), but it would not solve the network’s structural problems. The routes between major cities are often too slow, unelectrified and served by outdated stock. The solution to all of that is an absolute shedload of cash.
